Israeli drone strike in Bint Jbeil one seriously injured

SOUTH LEBANON — An Israeli drone strike targeted a motorcycle in Bint Jbeil early Monday evening, seriously injuring one person, according to L'Orient Today's South Lebanon correspondent. Earlier in the afternoon, another Israeli drone dropped a stun grenade on the village of Ramieh (Bint Jbeil district), where Israeli soldiers carried out sweeping operations using machine guns. These Israeli troop movements — involving near-daily incursions into border villages from the five positions they continue to occupy on Lebanese territory — also extended to the outskirts of Yaroun (Bint Jbeil district). The day in South Lebanon had been relatively calm until then. On Monday morning, Israeli drones flew over several areas of the Bekaa Valley, including Baalbeck and the western part of the plain.

Diaries from Gaza: In these moments, I see a version of my daughter that war can't touch

Noor al-Yacoubi is a 26-year-old translator and writer. She hasn't left the Gaza Strip since the war began on Oct. 7, 2023, and has been sharing reflections on her life with L'Orient Today during the war. Today she speaks of the bitterness she feels over the childhood that war has stolen from her daughter, Lya, and the rituals she puts in place to help them both forget — if only for a moment — the horrors of the Israeli aggression that destroys everything around has become my favorite time with Lya. Not because either of us is especially passionate about it. It's not about art, it's about safety. It's the only activity we can share that feels remotely normal while the world around us falls the war began, Lya hasn't lived a single normal day. Not one. She's never been to a park or a playground. She's...

One killed in Israeli strike on a vehicle in the Sour district

An Israeli drone strike targeted a vehicle on the Tuwairi-Srifa road in the Sour district on Saturday, firing three missiles and critically injuring one person, L'Orient Today's correspondent in the south reported. After the first missile missed its target, the passengers attempted to flee, prompting a pursuit, according to our correspondent. Ambulances were dispatched to the scene. The vehicle's driver was later confirmed dead. Israeli reconnaissance aircraft are still flying over the town of Srifa and its surroundings, our correspondent added. In a separate incident on Saturday, an Israeli drone crashed on the outskirts of the town of Mais al Jabal (Bint Jbeil), and the Lebanese Army dismantled it. Israel has attacked southern Lebanon almost daily since the November truce agreement. The cease-fire mandated the establishment of a monitoring committee composed of representatives from Lebanon, Israel, the U.S., France and UNIFIL. However, the body rarely issues statements, and little is known about the fulfillment of its duties.

Two young twins killed in Tripoli apartment fire

Two twin children, both two and a half years old, died in an apartment fire early Saturday morning in the northern Lebanese city of Tripoli, L'Orient Today's correspondent in the north reported. The children were asleep when the blaze broke out and could not be rescued in time. Thick smoke from the fire blanketed the area, forcing nearby residents to flee their homes for fear of suffocation and the flames spreading to neighboring buildings. The fire erupted in a residential unit located between the Rifaiyeh and Citadel neighborhoods, according to our correspondent. Civil Defense teams managed to extinguish the flames shortly afterward, but the children had already succumbed. Emergency responders from the Emergency and Relief Corps transported the children's bodies to the government hospital in Qobbeh. The incident has left the local community devastated, with grief and shock spreading among neighbors.
