Sophisticated South American Crime Tourists Hit with Charges for Jewelry Heists

Sophisticated South American Crime Tourists Hit with Charges for Jewelry Heists originally appeared on L.A. Mag. When Glendale Police arrived to a small mom-and-pop jewelry store that had just been cleaned out on a Tuesday afternoon in late May, there was no sign of forced entry, at first, until they looked up. The sophisticated thieves had burrowed through the roof of Bidrussian Jewelry located at 1102 ½ S. Glendale Avenue and made off with what police are calling an "unknown amount of jewelry" and fled into the night. During the robbery, the thieves used cell phone jammers so no one could call police, which also left people unable to call emergency services for other issues, Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman said Thursday. Glendale Detectives assigned to the burglary division launched an investigation, worked sources and pressed known fences, and came up with likely suspects: a professional robbery crew from South America, part of a recent and growing surge of criminals from outside the U.S. who come to L.A. as "crime tourists" with plans to steal. Last summer, a similar crew was locked up for a brazen stickup right out of a Hollywood action flick: the robbers pointed a gun at a tourist eating lunch with his family at the Beverly Hills Four Seasons and demanded his Rolex, one of many gunpoint watch heists the Venezuelans pulled off as tourists to L.A. There have been so many crimes that fit the pattern, that the streets were talking about a new crew that was planning to break into another small jewelry store in La Verne. Glendale Police puts it this way, detectives "developed leads identifying possible suspects. Working in coordination with local agencies, detectives initiated surveillance on the group." And when they showed up at their next target, Rodeo Jewelers, located at 1560 Foothill Boulevard in the City of La Verne, in the dead of night last Sunday, police were waiting, surveilling, ready to pounce. Once again, police say, "the suspects also used signal jammers and cut wires to the location," to prevent surveillance or 911 calls from anyone who saw them in action. Once they were in, they were nabbed, police and prosecutors say. 'To those involved in organized crime targeting businesses in Los Angeles County: No matter how carefully planned your crimes may be, you will be identified, apprehended, and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law,' Hochman said. 'Not only do these reckless crimes threaten livelihoods and instill fear in communities, but attempts to avoid detection by disabling emergency services put millions of lives at risk. This will not be tolerated under my watch.'The men charged are: Jose Millafil; Luka Pazitiani; Javier Sepulveda; Matias Vera; Victor Iturriagalopez; Edson Gonzalez; and Cristian Gonzalezaburto. They are all charged with multiple felonies for burglarizing two jewelry stores and causing extensive infrastructure damage. This story was originally reported by L.A. Two Firefighters Were Executed, and a Third Wounded, In Idaho Sniper Attack

Two Firefighters Were Executed, and a Third Wounded, In Idaho Sniper Attack originally appeared on L.A. Mag. At least two firefighters were fatally shot and at least one was critically injured while responding to what appears to be an intentionally set brush fire in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho. At least one active shooter continues to fire at law enforcement with high-powered rifles, according to Kootenai County Sheriff Robert Norris, who said civilians were trying to get off Canfield Mountain, where the brush fire broke out, drawing the victims to the scene. 'We are actively taking sniper fire as we speak,' Norris said, adding that the number of victims hit by gunfire remained unclear. He did have a message for the swarms of law enforcement who raced to the scene: "As soon as someone gets a clear shot, I encourage them to take it and neutralize the threat. We will neutralize this threat." The chaotic scene unfolded Sunday afternoon when firefighters responded to a call for a brush fire around 1:30 p.m. local time, and found themselves under attack almost immediately. The desperation as first responders took what Norris called "rapid fire" could be heard as firefighters radioed for help, a chilling broadcast that was posted by Broadcastify. "Two battalion chiefs down, two officers injured,' a first responder said over the radio, according to the recording. 'I have no idea where the shooters [are] at or where they're going, in which direction. I would recommend that our units, all of our firing units, escape further down the pavement towards town, maybe a half a mile or so to a safe staging area,' a voice on the first responder radio have not confirmed the total number of people injured or whether they've been able to evacuate everyone from the area.'We're going to need multiple ambulances for ALS care," the speaker continued. "As soon as we can get law enforcement in here to get these people out, I recommend we get no less than five, five ambulances staged at the bottom. I don't care where we get them from."International Association of Fire Fighters President Ed Kelly called the ambush a "heinous act of violence." Officers reported that shots were coming from multiple directions, suggesting the possibility of multiple attackers, Norris said. He added it appeared that 'high-powered rifles' were being used by attackers who appeared to be trained and were blending into the mountain's bushy terrain. This is a developing story. It's an entire industry of people at every level, the vast majority of which are not the top 1%.'Jenkins also expressed support for tentpole feature productions that remain in California to receive a federal tax credit. Other states remain fierce competitors, including New York, which recently increased its film and television tax credits to $800 million per to the bill also require producers to report the veteran status and ZIP codes of their employees, along with race, ethnicity and gender.
