This is the latest Montreal baller heading to the NBA

(Michael Conroy/The Associated Press) Another Montrealer has been picked up by an NBA team. Forward Jahmyl Telfort's rights were acquired by the LA Clippers after the NBA Entry Draft on Friday. The 6′7″, 225-pound senior who played his college ball with the Butler Bulldogs averaged 16 points a game, 4.7 rebounds and 3.4 assists as a senior. He started in 28 of 31 games for the Bulldogs. The terms of Telfort's contract are unknown. The Montreal North native moved with his family to Boucherville, Que. where he played high school ball at De Moortagne High School before moving to Toronto and then the NCAA. Telfort is the latest talent from Montreal North to draw attention from the NBA. NBA champion Luguentz 'Lu' Dort of the Oklahoma City Thunder and Indiana Pacer Bennedict Mathurin (who lost to Dort in the finals) are both from the borough, in addition to a handful of other players.

NBA star James Harden accused of negligence in sexual assault lawsuit against his nephew
LA Clippers star player James Harden has been accused of negligence in a lawsuit that claims a woman was raped by his nephew while she was unconscious after a New Year's Eve party at his Texas house last year. Harden's nephew, Justice Armani Blackburn, is accused of sexual assault against Marisa Watley, 40, in a civil complaint filed in Texas on Monday by law firm Wigdor and co-counsel Ellwanger Henderson. The lawsuit alleges that security guards hired by Harden could have prevented the alleged rape and that he is "vicariously liable for the actions of his guards and their corporate employer." It names Harden, Blackburn, and an unknown number of unidentified security guards as defendants, listed as 'security guards 1-10,' and their unidentified employer. Watley is seeking more than $100,000 in damages and wants a jury trial. Representatives for both Harden and Blackburn were contacted for comment. Neither has responded publicly to the allegations. "Plaintiff Marisa Watley was brutally raped by Defendant Justice Armani Blackburn following a New Years Eve party at Defendant James Harden's mansion home," the complaint says. According to the lawsuit, filed in the Harris County District Clerk District, Watley's friends had allegedly told the security team that she appeared to be missing in the house and that the guards were aware that women were passed out from intoxication throughout the house. "Nonetheless, Mr. Harden's security team recklessly failed to protect Ms. Watley on Mr. Harden's property — and the result was a sexual assault from which she will suffer indefinitely," the lawsuit says. Watley, a real estate agent, said in a statement: "Since New Year's Day, when I reported the rape by Mr. Blackburn to the police, I have remained puzzled by how Mr. Harden's security behaved that day — it is painful to imagine that this all could have been stopped in time. I hope this complaint pushes security employees generally to act more responsibly when women are in danger." The complaint says she now speaks with a heavy stutter due to the "severe trauma" of the alleged rape. The lawsuit says that Watley and two friends met at a restaurant on New Year's Eve before going to a party at a nearby club. At about 3:30 a.m., they allegedly saw Harden in a VIP area and learned of a party at his house. The three women took an Uber to his house — the complaint says Watley thought they were going to a friend's apartment — where an armed security guard checked their IDs and told them to go to the recording studio inside, the lawsuit says. There, the lawsuit says, Blackburn gave all three women a drink that caused them to pass out. The lawsuit says that Watley's memory from this point "becomes extremely hazy" as she faded in and out of consciousness. "The next thing Ms. Watley recalls is being shocked into consciousness while lying face down on a bed with a man behind her having aggressive sex with her," the lawsuit says. Watley alleges that after this, a security guard told her to leave. The lawsuit says her two friends had already been told to leave and were locked out despite telling security guards that their friend and some possessions were still inside. The lawsuit says they were allegedly told no women were in the house, but the friends soon saw more women leaving. Watley's two friends had her iPhone and were able to contact her sister through her emergency contacts at 10:44 a.m., who then called the police. The lawsuit alleges that it wasn't until after 1:29 p.m. that Watley emerged. Her attorneys, Michael J. Willemin and John S. Crain from Wigdor, and Jay Ellwanger and Kaylyn Betts of Ellwanger Henderson, said in a joint statement that Watley showed "great strength and courage" in reporting the allegations. "This rape was immediately reported to the police, and we will bring Mr. Blackburn and Mr. Harden to justice through the civil justice system," they said.

2025 NBA Free Agents: A Contender Should Take A Flyer On Ben Simmons

(Photo by) With the 2024-25 season nearing its conclusion, it is time to start looking ahead to the offseason. In this article series, we will take a look at under-the-radar options in the 2025 Free Agency Pool. For the sake of simplicity, we are going to focus primarily on unrestricted free agents. Few players have experienced a fall from grace on par with the one Ben Simmons has experienced over the last few years. Just four years ago, Simmons was being selected to All-Star and All-Defensive teams and considered an integral piece on a team that was one win away from the Eastern Conference Finals. Then, injuries and an unwillingness to shoot the basketball caught up to him, leading to the former first overall pick accepting a contract buyout and signing with another team for the minimum in just his age-28 season. Now, Simmons is an unrestricted free agent this offseason, and while it is clear he is no longer the top 25 player that he once was, Simmons has shown that he can still contribute to winning at the right price. Ben Simmons Gives Teams Lineup Versatility When he first arrived on the NBA scene, Simmons was viewed as a point guard because of his prodigious vision and advanced ball handling abilities. For the first four years of his career, Simmons never played less than 74% of his minutes at point guard and never logged a single minute in the frontcourt (per Basketball Reference). Unfortunately, Simmons shooting woes (he's only taken 36 career 3-pointers) and inability to bend defenses consistently made it nearly impossible to play him at lead guard and still field a sound offense. The good news is that thanks to his size (6'10) and strength, Simmons has been able to transition to playing more minutes at power forward/center. This season, his three most frequent matchups included Giannis Antetokounmpo, Evan Mobley, and Pascal Siakam (per The beauty of Simmons is that he has the force to battle with paint-centric players like the troika above and the gracefulness to dance with smaller players. According to BBall Index, Simmons' performance last season placed in the 96th percentile in Defensive Positional Versatility. Ben Simmons Player Card. Simmons gives teams who tout a more traditional center (Brook Lopez, Nikola Jokic, Ivica Zubac, etc.) a different pitch because of his ability to seamlessly toggle between guarding centers, forwards, and guards. If you're one of those teams that rosters a stone-footed starting center and needs a lineup that can switch everything, you can turn to Simmons as your backup five in a small-ball lineup. Simmons Can Do Enough On Offense To Get By As A Center Simmons' offensive foibles killed his teams when he was playing point guard, but when he's at center, they are far less damaging. While playing the five, Simmons doesn't need to worry about perimeter shooting or on-ball creation. He just needs to screen, cut, make quick reads as a passer (in short rolls or when he's being used as a playmaking hub), and finish around the rim. As the player card above shows, Simmons had a great season as a screener – placing in the 92nd percentile in screening talent (the same is true with his cutting). His distribution skills also remain as sharp as ever, as Simmons placed in the 100th percentile in Ben Taylor's Passer Rating metric. Finishing was a struggle for him last season (31st percentile rim accuracy), which is a big reason why head coach Tyronn Lue eventually phased him out of the rotation in the Los Angeles Clippers' first round series against the Denver Nuggets. However, there is hope that this was just a fluke, as Simmons has placed in the 67th percentile or higher in rim finishing in five of his six other NBA seasons. At the end of the day, Simmons is still a below average offensive player, even when he's playing center. But his passing, screening, cutting, and finishing are good enough to keep him on the floor and allow his employer to reap the benefits of his all-inclusive defensive package. As someone who will likely sign for the veteran minimum again this offseason (estimated to be 3.1 million, based on Simmons' experience), Simmons offers a great option for playoff teams looking to add a versatile chess piece to their bench rotation at an affordable rate.
