Two dead including LAPD sergeant in horror crash on busy 405 freeway
A veteran Los Angeles Police Department sergeant was struck and killed in a horror crash when he stopped to help after an accident on the side of the highway left another driver dead.
Sgt. Shiou Deng, a 26-year police veteran, was killed around 2am when he got out of his patrol car to assist with an earlier crash on the busy 405 Freeway early Monday morning in LA.
He was struck from behind by oncoming traffic in the southbound lanes.
The tragic incident left two people dead.
The entire southbound side of one of the city's busiest freeways was shut down for hours bringing traffic to a standstill.
LAPD Chief Jim McDonnell said Deng had come upon the recent collision on the 405 near Moraga Drive and stopped with his emergency lights on to help.
'He exited from his police vehicle and as he approached the crash site, he was struck from the rear by oncoming traffic,' McDonnell said during a morning news conference.
'He was transported to UCLA Medical Center, and despite their valiant efforts, he did not make it. He passed sometime this morning.'

Shocking video footage from the scene revealed a wrecked pickup truck with deployed airbags and Deng's LAPD patrol car scattered across the southbound lanes.
Emergency crews worked to clear the wreckage.
