J&K CM Omar Abdullah scales graveyard gates to offer tributes to martyrs

J&K CM Omar Abdullah , along with his father and other party colleagues, on Monday made a dramatic entry into Martyrs' Graveyard in downtown Srinagar to commemorate the killing of 22 Kashmiris by the Dogra forces on July 13 in 1931. Abdullah climbed the railing to enter the graveyard and was even stopped by the police inside the shrine complex. However, he managed to reach the graveyard and showered flowers to honour those killed in 1931. His Cabinet colleague Sakina Ittoo arrived on a two-wheeler. The administration had placed most of the political leaders under house arrest on July 13 and disallowed any gathering at the graveyard. They had also placed restrictions on all major roads leading to the graveyard. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Perfectly Timed Photos You Won't Believe Are Real Read More Undo Referring to LG Manoj Sinha's administration, Abdullah said those people who claim that their responsibility is only law and order didn't let them step out on Sunday. "I informed the control room that I wanted to visit the graveyard (on Sunday) and within minutes, a security bunker was placed right outside my residence gate. It remained there till midnight," said Abdullah, who didn't inform the control room on Monday and decided to visit the graveyard quietly. Live Events "Even today, they shamelessly tried to stop us. A CRPF vehicle was parked in the middle of Nowhatta Chowk to block our movement. They even attempted to attack us," he alleged. The CM asked which law allows them to stop elected representatives from paying tribute to martyrs? "Is this a democracy or dictatorship? They say India is a free country, but they treat us like slaves," said Abdullah. He also shared a video clip of a cop trying to stop him inside the complex. "We are not anyone's slaves. We are answerable to the people, not to uniformed officers who misuse power and violate the law," he said. Abdullah said the LG-led administration thought the elected representatives would come here only on July 13.

Shivraj Chouhan says 5 lakh PMAY beneficiaries in J&K to be provided houses soon

Omar Abdullah and Shivraj Singh Chouhan (ANI photo) SRINAGAR: With chief minister Omar Abdullah sitting next to him, Union minister for agriculture and rural development Shivraj Singh Chouhan on Thursday said nearly five lakh people in Jammu and Kashmir did not own a house, and they would be allotted one soon. Addressing a press conference, Chouhan said the allotment of 93% of houses under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY) in J&K had been completed, and the remaining eligible beneficiaries had been identified. 'In a recent survey, five lakh names have been identified as deserving housing. The allotments will be made soon after the verification process,' he said. Under the LG-led administration earlier, Omar had questioned the criteria for identifying the housing scheme beneficiaries in J&K. 'Before allotting land, govt must clarify whom it considers 'homeless',' he had said in July 2023. He had made it clear that he was opposed to the inclusion of those who came to Kashmir after the abrogation of Article 370 in 2019 under this scheme. J&K parties have in the past accused the Centre of attempting to settle 'outsiders' in Kashmir. Chouhan emphasised that a developed J&K was crucial to PM Narendra Modi's vision of a 'Viksit Bharat'. He praised the state's initiative, 'Kisan Khidmat Ghar' — a one-stop centre providing farmers access to all agricultural services under one roof. The minister said farmers in the UT who had received land allotments from govt but lacked official documentation would be considered for inclusion under the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi scheme. Govt was also planning to launch the Restructured Weather Based Crop Insurance Scheme soon to ensure that horticulture crops were accurately mapped and included under the PM Fasal Bima Yojana, he added. Chouhan expressed satisfaction with the variety of horticulture crops grown in the region, but also raised a critical issue of imported plant materials often turning out to be infected after two or three years. To address this, a Rs 150-crore Clean Plant Centre would be established in Srinagar under the Mission for Integrated Development of Horticulture, he said. 'It will focus on clean, disease-free planting material for apples, almonds, walnuts and berries. Private nurseries will also be supported to ensure high-quality, pathogen-free plants are made available to farmers,' he added. Calling 'saffron' a symbol of Kashmir's identity, Chouhan announced that the Centre would establish a tissue culture lab and nursery to boost its production. He said the National Saffron Mission would be revised to suit local conditions, and an expert team of scientists would be formed to improve productivity and reduce losses.

Indonesia says US$9.8 billion EV battery project to continue with China's Huayou after LG's exit

[JAKARTA] Indonesia has confirmed that a US$9.8 billion electric vehicle (EV) battery investment project will move forward, but with China's Zhejiang Huayou Cobalt stepping in as strategic investor following the pullout by South Korea's LG Energy Solution (LGES). Bahlil Lahadalia, Indonesia's Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources, said in a statement on Wednesday (Apr 23) that the Titan Project is still on track, despite global geopolitical tensions and economic uncertainties. He emphasised that the core plan and production timeline will proceed as originally scheduled, with groundbreaking set to take place later this year. 'We want to make it clear that this project is not impacted by global dynamics such as wars or economic uncertainty. Changes in investors are a normal part of large-scale projects, and our ultimate goal remains unchanged: to position Indonesia as a global hub for the electric-vehicle industry.' China's Huayou will team up with Indonesia's state-owned mining companies, including Indonesia Battery Corporation, through a joint-venture arrangement to produce EV batteries. In a statement last week, LGES, with LG Chem, LX International Corp and other consortium partners, announced their decision to withdraw from their planned investment in the project, which is one of the country's five major EV battery mega projects. The pullout comes barely a year after Jakarta celebrated a key milestone in its push to produce EV batteries – the inauguration of the project's plant, also South-east Asia's first EV battery cell plant, in Karawang, West Java. The guest of honour at the event was then-President Joko Widodo. Development of the facility was begun by HLI Green Power, a joint venture between Hyundai, LGES and Indonesia Battery Corporation. In its first phase, US$1.1 billion was invested in the facility that would generate 10 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of battery cells annually. That output is enough to power around 150,000 electric cars, said the company in a statement last year. A second phase, estimated at US$2 billion, was set to double the plant's output to 20 GWh, underscoring Indonesia's bold vision to become a major player in the global EV supply chain. State-Owned Enterprises Minister Erick Thohir gave the assurance that the departure of the LG-led consortium would not derail Indonesia's ambitions to become a key player in the EV industry by leveraging the country's abundant nickel reserves, a critical component in battery production. The minister was reported by Antara news agency as having said: 'LG's decision doesn't slow our momentum. We are still moving forward aggressively to develop an EV supply chain that supports Indonesia's long-term vision.' Indonesian state-owned miner Aneka Tambang, which had initially planned to form a joint venture with LGES for nickel mining, reaffirmed its commitment to collaborating with other companies to ensure a steady supply of nickel for the production of batteries.
