Kirsty Wark: When I started on TV, I wore jackets with massive shoulders

I have these ridiculous, sparkly shoes from Chanel that are so special, but too high for me to walk in. When my daughter was 16 she 'borrowed' them from my wardrobe to go clubbing. They're famous in our house for that reason alone. As a child I loved Chelsea Girl and a shop called Shades in Kilmarnock. When I went to university I started shopping at vintage shops. Actually we just called them jumble sales in those days. I bought a lot of miniskirts. I used to love going to a charity place for distressed gentlefolk in Edinburgh. Older women gave them things they had knitted. I bought this very cool Fair Isle knit with short sleeves that I really, really liked and cherished for many years. Like many young Scottish women, I was given a sewing machine for my 21st birthday, which I used to alter good jackets and dirndl skirts from the Fifties, some of which I still wear. These days it's a really good quality cotton dress. I've got a couple of La DoubleJ shirtdresses that are so great. I wore one when I was presenting at the Royal Academy of Arts' Summer Exhibition and ended up having my picture taken with a woman who was wearing the same dress. I got very good at planning once I started working for the BBC. I definitely thought a lot about what I was going to wear in order not to have to think about it again. The key thing is never to be uncomfortable so I'm focused on the job. There is no stylist or budget for wardrobe. When I first started on TV, I wore a lot of burnt orange linen jackets with massive shoulders. They became a suit of armour. You get used to the feedback from viewers. I've had all sorts of comments, from the man who said I looked like I was wearing a chequerboard, to the guy who messaged to ask if I was on my way to a rodeo; I was wearing a western shirt by Christopher Kane. I wear a lot of navy — well, specifically Margaret Howell navy. My everyday uniform is a pair of cords or a pair of baggy jeans and a stripy top. It's something of an obsession. I buy expensive ones and cheap ones, everywhere from Uniqlo to Agnès b. Whenever I buy one, I buy one for my daughter, Caitlin too. I don't shop on the high street much, but I do love what Clare Waight Keller is doing at Uniqlo. • Read more fashion advice and style inspiration from our experts Desmond & Dempsey pyjamas — I adore them. I also like Tekla for nightwear. There are a host of Scottish labels I go to regularly. I love Le Kilt — Sam McCoach, who is behind it, is brilliant — and I adore Christopher Kane. What he and his sister Tammy created is amazing. I've worn so many of his pieces over the years — a heavy duchess satin coat is probably my most treasured. I love the Glasgow/Paris-based La Fetiche too. I don't really have fashion regrets, but there are hairstyles. I once had a perm and, oh my goodness, did I regret that from the moment I got out of the salon. I looked like a footballer. Crop tops are a problem. I've bought a lot of long coats: I think the swaddling effect appeals. I wear them less now,but I've always thought there was something glamorous about them. I had an incredible one at school that I bought in a second-hand shop, and then I got a chocolate brown one when I went to university. I recently bought a new one at the Woolrich shop in New York. 'It also underlines the gratitude we have for La DoubleJ, and other fashion partners including Savas, Nomasei, AHLEM and Roxanne Assoulin, for stepping-up and stepping-out in support. La DoubleJ Resort 2026 Collection

'Wrapping the world in joy' is La DoubleJ's motto—and even if the world doesn't seem to listen to such urging, founder JJ Martin bravely marches on as a standard bearer of mood-boasting, spirit-lifting fashion. To celebrate 10 years of turning everyday style into a full-on fiesta of high-vibration prints, she relocated the company to the new LDJ Starquarters, a six-story playground in Milan's hip Naviglio district. Housing the label's full operations and serving as a consciousness-raising hub for its community, the new LDJ offices are crowned by the expansive Galactic Deck—a gathering space with sweeping 360 views over the city, where the the brand's followers come together for spiritual practices, some of which involve a custom-made gong. Encrusted with meteorite fragments, and forged in a fire ceremony at Mount Etna, the gong presides over meditations, healing sessions, and yoga classes. For Martin, the sky's the limit—quite literally. Prints may be LDJ's raison d'être—the pulsing, high-frequency current around which the entire wardrobe orbits—but even Martin herself occasionally finds the signal a little too strong. 'Lately I opened my closet and thought, 'What the heck? How am I supposed to get dressed with all these patterns?'' she laughed. So the volume's been toned down (just a notch): think solid staples ('always with a little twist to them '), crisp white shirts ('we've got seven white shirts in the collection!'), not-so-plain denim ('jacquarded, obviously'), and dashes of nocturnal black. The prints themselves have also mellowed—motifs have grown in scale, giving everything a bit more breathing room. The visual jazz has softened, yet the trippy, esoteric symbolism is still vibing. Cue the 'Fantastic Creatures' capsule, a prismatic loungewear fantasy made in collaboration with the surrealist Ecuadorian artist Beto Val featuring wild alchemies of flora and fauna: flamingos blooming into hollyhocks, leafy parrots with beak-shaped foliage, seashells spiraling into insects-turned-flowers, and a helicopter-bird-root hybrid that defies both botany and logic. Part spirit quest, part slumber party, and full-on LDJ.

The store said that as a key member of the senior retail leadership team, Devonish 'will play an instrumental role in guiding strategy, fostering collaboration across departments, and upholding Liberty's legacy of excellence in visual presentation, brand storytelling, and service.' As reported, the store has been marking its anniversary with a focus on design, nature and art, with exhibitions, installations, exclusive products, and collaborations with museums, artists and design institutions. At the heart of the anniversary celebrations is the exhibition 'I Am. We Are. Liberty,' which offers visitors a glimpse into the Liberty print archive, a resource for fashion and interior designers throughout history. The exhibition is running now and will sail to Japan in August for the Expo 2025 in Osaka. Last month it unveiled The Patchwork Collective, a quilted house made from 1,500 patchwork squares. People and brands who contributed squares included Jil Sander, Paul Smith, La DoubleJ, Barbour, and Levi's. Earlier this year the store worked with the stylist and editor Leith Clark to curate a series of pieces from brands including Fornasetti, Diptyque, Max Mara, Erdem and La DoubleJ. There were also exclusive pieces from Cece Jewellery, Foundrae and Liberty Interiors. Aiming to 'deliver life-saving programs to women and girls in vulnerable communities', it's available from 12 June via La DoubleJ's webstore, it includes the bestselling Better Than Your Boyfriend's Shirt and Pull-Up Shorts in fil coupé and the Mini Foulard in Italian silk. They're helping to raise awareness around the collaboration as (RED) said 'the fight against AIDS faces unprecedented challenges and the extraordinary progress to date – and the lives of many — are in jeopardy. To date, (RED) has generated over $785 million for the Global Fund, helping more than 325 million people.
