Switch 2 devs are already bleating about performance issues — Donkey Kong Bananza director reveals challenges
When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission. Nintendo Switch 2 game developers are already bumping up against the constraints imposed by the new console's hardware. In an interview with Spain's La Vanguardia newspaper (machine translation, h/t WinFuture), Donkey Kong Bananza director, Kazuya Takahashi, admitted 'performance may drop,' due to the extravagant use of 3D voxel technology in the game's destructible environment. This is quite an admission from a Nintendo exec behind a flagship first-party title. Takahashi explained that this performance-second decision was given the green light as the team 'prioritized fun and gameplay.' Donkey Kong Bananza journeyed down quite an interesting path to the Switch 2, which could partly explain the performance wrinkles. This smashing new 3D platformer and Switch 2 exclusive was originally destined for the Switch. However, this first 3D Donkey Kong outing since Donkey Kong 64 goes all-in on destructible environments to deliver its gameplay thrills. Destructible environments in this game are extensive, in a kind of sandbox exploration way, where DK can smash his hulking fists through walls, can dig tunnels, and tear off environmental bits and bats for weapon or platforming tool use. It sounds like explosive fun, indeed, but the 3D voxel engine behind the environment is demanding. That's why the game was pulled back to be prepared for the new Switch 2. A La Vanguardia reporter asked Takahashi about their experience of 'frame drops at certain times and levels,' in what is expected to be the shipping version of Donkey Kong Bananza. 'There are several factors to consider. First of all, we intentionally used effects such as hit stop or slow motion to emphasize the impacts. On the other hand, when using voxel technology, there are times when there are big changes and destruction in the scenery,' said the game's director. 'We are aware that in these moments the performance may drop a bit. However, as you say, overall the game can be enjoyed smoothly, and at points where large-scale changes occur, we have prioritized fun and gameplay.' (DeepL, machine translation) Clearly, there may be a few stutters experienced when the game engine begins to reach its boundaries on the Switch 2 hardware. With Nintendo being aware of this potential issue for gamers, and the always-connected nature of today's consoles, we hope optimizations will eventually arrive to iron out any startling wrinkles. Or they could just turn up the DLSS knob. For clues regarding the faltering performance of the Switch 2 in its maiden year, check out our in-depth Switch 2 review and hardware analysis from June. We note that 3D environment voxel engine games were seen on PC as early as 1992, with Comanche: Maximum Overkill. That game's proprietary Voxel Space engine was apparently written entirely in assembly language for the best performance. Nintendo's unruly new 3D platformer is due to launch this Thursday (July 17). Spanish course to be announced as 2031 Ryder Cup host
The Ryder Cup is headed to Spain. Camiral Golf and Wellness Resort in Caldes de Malavella will host the 2031 matches, Ramon Nogue, president of the Catalan golf federation, confirmed to the Associated Press on Friday. The news was first reported by the Spanish outlet La Vanguardia. An official announcement by Ryder Cup Europe is expected next week. Camiral, which is located near Girona and just up the coast from Barcelona, was formerly known as PGA Catalunya, which has hosted past Spanish Opens on the DP World Tour. This will be the second time Spain has hosted the biennial competition between the U.S. and Europe. Valderrama Golf Club in Andalucia hosted the 1997 Ryder Cup, marking the first time that the match was played in continental Europe. Upcoming Ryder Cup venues: 2025 – Bethpage Black, Farmingdale, New York 2027 – Adare Manor, County Limerick, Ireland 2029 – Hazeltine National, Chaska, Minnesota 2031 – Camiral Golf and Wellness Resort, Caldes de Malavella, Spain 2033 – Olympic Club, San Francisco

2031 Ryder Cup to be hosted in Girona, Spain, says Catalan golf federation
Barcelona, Spain (AP) — The 2031 Ryder Cup will be held in northeastern Spain, the president of the Catalan golf federation has told The Associated Press. Ramon Nogué, president of the Catalan golf federation, told the AP by phone Friday that 'next week it will be official' that Girona will be announced as the host of the golfing event between the best male players of Europe and the United States. The choice of Girona's Camiral Golf course was first reported by Spanish newspaper La Vanguardia. 'Any announcement in relation to future editions of the Ryder Cup will be made in due course,' Ryder Cup Europe said. The Camiral resort, which was previously called PGA Catalunya, has hosted European Tour events and the Spanish Open. It has been owned by Irish businessman Denis O'Brien since 2008. Irish media have reported that O'Brien has invested tens of millions of euros in upgrades to the courses and the hotel, as well as accommodation on the property. This will be the second time for Spain to host the Cup after Valderrama in 1997, and just the fourth time it will be played in continental Europe after Le Golf National outside Paris in 2018 and Marco Simone outside Rome in 2023. The Ryder Cup is closely tied to Spain because of European team stalwarts Seve Ballesteros, José María Olazábal and Sergio García. This year's Ryder Cup will be held at Bethpage Black in New York in September. The next one staged in Europe is in 2027 at Adare Manor in Ireland. ___ AP Sports Writer Steve Douglas in Portrush, Northern Ireland, contributed to this report. ___ AP golf:

PORTRUSH, Northern Ireland – The 2031 Ryder Cup will be held in Spain at the Camiral Golf & Wellness Resort in Caldes de Malavella, a town in the northeast province of Girona. The choice of the resort course was first reported by Spanish newspaper La Vanguardia. Ramon Nogué, president of the Catalan golf federation, confirmed that Girona, just north of Barcelona, would be the site of the 2031 Ryder Cup to The Associated Press on Friday night. He said that 'next week it will be official' as a formal press announcement is believed to be scheduled for July 25. The resort, which was formerly known as PGA Catalunya, hosted the Spanish Open, a DP World Tour event, on multiple occasions, and is owned by Irish billionaire Dennis O'Brien. 'Any announcement in relation to future editions of the Ryder Cup will be made in due course,' Ryder Cup Europe told the AP. The selection comes three decades after Valderrama in southern Spain hosted the first Ryder Cup in continental Europe in 1997.
