Essence Brings HBCU Classic to Nation's Oldest CFB Stadium
Labor Day Weekend 2025 won't just mark the return of college football. It'll signal the birth of something historic. For the first time ever, an HBCU football classic will be held in Boston. And not just anywhere in the city. Inside Harvard Stadium, the oldest college football stadium in the country. The inaugural ESSENCE Kickoff Classic will feature Morehouse College facing off against Johnson C. Smith University (JCSU), delivering a powerful season opener and a cultural homecoming on Ivy League turf. This year's event is a bold elevation from last fall's Morehouse vs. JCSU showdown. The game was featured in season two of HBCU Gameday's Brick x Brick docuseries. That episode gave fans a gritty, behind-the-scenes look at two historic programs giving their all for an early-season win. But in 2025, it's getting bigger. Brick x Brick will return with a special episode dedicated to the Kickoff Classic. The episode hopes to go behind the scenes to show what happens when an HBCU game moves from the South to the Ivy League. "The ESSENCE Kickoff Classic is more than a game-a cultural statement," said Michele Ghee, Chief Content Officer of ESSENCE Ventures. "By bringing HBCU football to Boston for the first time. We're not only honoring the rich legacy of our institutions. We're creating space for Black excellence to thrive in new places." Boston, long seen as a hub for higher education and equity-driven innovation, is embracing its role as host city with open arms. "We are proud to bring the spirit of HBCUs to Harvard Stadium and look forward to welcoming visitors from across the country," said Boston Mayor Michelle Wu, highlighting the city's commitment to inclusion and cultural celebration. The Classic is more than 60 minutes of football-it's an all-out weekend experience. Expect a citywide celebration packed with music, community activations, career fairs, step shows, and-of course-the unmatched energy of HBCU marching bands. Event Co-Founder Derrick Brown summed it up best. "The Classic isn't just a game - it's a citywide celebration of culture, community, and Boston's bold commitment to inclusivity." From the tailgate to the halftime show, this event is meant to fuse the legacy of HBCUs with Boston's future-forward thinking, making it both a tribute and a trailblazer. ESSENCE, the iconic platform dedicated to Black women and communities. Searheads an event supported by MeetBoston, the city's tourism hub, and Campus Rise, a mission-driven platform helping underrepresented students thrive. This partnership ensures that the Classic won't just be seen-it will be felt. Harvard Stadium has seen its share of historic football moments over the decades. But this will be the first time its end zones ring out with the sound of a drumline, the stomp of a step team, and the roar of fans proudly reppin' their HBCUs. Ice Cream Alley is back at Smorgasburg LA to cool you down this summer
If you're anything like us, the hazy, humid summer temperatures have started to get to you. Luckily, Smorgasburg LA has a great way to beat the heat. Usually, the popular open-air food market is home to favorites like Cena Vegan, Daddy's Chicken Shack, Black Sugar Ribs Co, and Baohaus. Now, it's ice cream's time to shine. Savory, umami, and salty food aside, ROW DTLA at Smorgasburg LA just became ice cream central. This popular food venue is in the midst of a yearly event for Angelenos who enjoy creamy frozen treats. Running now through August 31st, Smorgasburg LA is home to Ice Cream Alley. "Every year since we opened in 2016, Smorgasburg has celebrated summer by creating a special area of our market dedicated to sweet frozen treats," Zach Brooks, general manager of Smorgasburg LA, said in a press release. Initially, the event was a National Ice Cream Day event, but it was so popular that it was turned into a two-month-long summertime pop-up that runs through Labor Day Weekend. The lineup includes the food venues' full-time frozen treat vendors as well as special guests. You'll have to visit Ice Cream Alley in the next few weeks if you want to try some of the guest vendors, including 626 Hospitality Group, with its chef-driven soft serve; Lefty Gelateria, with its small-batch gelato from Michelin-awarded chef Suyoung Park; Pampas Heladas Argentinos, with its artisanal Argentinian Helados; and the wildly popular Mateo's Ice Cream & Fruit Bars. When visiting Ice Cream Alley, you'll still be able to enjoy sweet, frozen treats from some of your favorite resident vendors. Bernie's, known for its chef-driven granita shaved ice cream, will be available, as well as Moom Maam Thai Gelato and Sad Girl Creamery. More special events and guests will be announced as the summer goes on.

Patrick Mahomes: "I'm not a big fan" of 18 games
Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes is the face of the NFL. He's not the face of the NFL's push for an inevitable 18th regular-season game. In an interview with CNBC Sport, Mahomes addressed the topic of another game that counts. 'I think that you'd have to find a way to have more bye weeks, more time spread out,' Mahomes told Alex Sherman of CNBC. 'Because, I mean, you've seen the amount of injuries that have kind of piled up there at the end of seasons, and you want to have the best players playing in the biggest games. And so if there were a way to get to 18 games, I'm not — I'm not a big fan of it. But if there were a way, I think you got to add some bye weeks in there to give more time for guys' bodies.' Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow previously has argued that, if there's another regular-season game, there should be a second bye. A second bye makes a ton of sense. Yes, the network hated the two-bye season of 1993, because it diluted the number of week-in and week-out games. But there are six more franchises now than there were then. The other problem is scheduling. The league justifies an 18th game in part by pointing to the reality of a Super Bowl on President's Day Weekend. Adding an extra bye will result in the Super Bowl overshooting President's Day — unless the NFL is willing to revert to the days of Week 1 on Labor Day Weekend. (And maybe it should.) However it plays out, an 18th game is coming. The only question left is whether the NFL Players Association agrees to it before the 2030 season, or whether the NFL has to lock them out until they inevitably take the best deal on the table before missing game checks in 2031.

NFL analyst has praise for UNC quarterback
What did an NFL analyst have to say about UNC quarterback Gio Lopez? We are just a few months away from the official start of the Bill Belichick era in Chapel Hill when the Tar Heels host TCU on Labor Day Weekend. When UNC hits the field, they will have a new starting quarterback at the helm as Gio Lopez and Bryce Baker will battle it out for the starting job. And early on, it appears as if Lopez has the upper hand. The former South Alabama quarterback transferred to North Carolina in the Spring and could make an immediate impact right away. While we have only seen UNC on the field for Spring practices, Lopez is impressing already in the eyes of an NFL analyst. Lopez participated in the Manning Passing Academy this past week and Todd McShay came away impressed with the quarterback, especially in one area. Here is what McShay wrote on Lopez: Lopez transferred from South Alabama to become Bill Belichick's first college QB. He's short but has BIG arm talent and killed it in the QB competition over the weekend. The deep ball specifically is beautiful and it's clear he has a lot of confidence in his arm. There was a lot of talented quarterbacks in the prestigious event that is hosted annually, so for Lopez to stand out in an area is a good thing. Now, let's hope that translates to the field when the Tar Heels begin this season.
