Footy WAG opens up about her heartbreaking battle to have children after her marriage to AFL star fell apart just months after they tied the knot: 'I was a shell of a human'

Former WAG Maddison Sullivan-Thorpe has opened up about her marriage breakdown to AFL star Lachie Hunter and the emotional toll of her heartbreaking four-year IVF journey. Sullivan-Thorpe, 30, split with her Bulldogs star husband in 2023 after less than a year of marriage and has since made peace with the fact that she will probably never be able to have kids. She started IVF at age 23 after visiting a fertility specialist and eventually gave up after lack of success. 'My fertility specialist is one of the most incredible women I've ever had the privilege of knowing - she was really honest about what the likelihood of that (sixth) round was,' Sullivan-Thorpe told the Inherited podcast. 'It didn't stop at absolutely breaking my heart. I think I was broken-hearted going into that and I was crushed finishing it. 'But I always say doing IVF is being part of a club that no one wants to be a part of and yet it is the most beautiful embodiment of the sisterhood you will ever see. 'And I am so grateful to every woman who ever reached out to me... who was so generous of spirit. It's a heartache like nothing else. 'And I think the challenge for me was I went from trying to have a baby to trying to preserve the idea of having a baby and the opportunity. 'Motherhood is something I've chosen to define very differently as I've gotten older and worked through the likelihood for me. 'I've done everything I can and will forever be so grateful to the 23 to 27 year-old version of me who gave everything and sacrificed so much to potentially give me the opportunity to be a mum.' Sullivan-Thorpe, who now has a fashion podcast and has founded Dom St Consulting, spoke about how emotionally draining the process was. 'When you're told that you may not be able to have something that you thought you could maybe do 10-12 years later - I always thought I'd be like a 35, 38 year-old mum,' she said. 'And that's a naivety younger me had in of itself. I don't know many 23 year-olds are thinking about fertility at that age. 'I actually got George (her golden retriever) the day before I went in for my third egg retrieval and it was love at first sight. This tiny beautiful thing that needed me and I needed him. I went in and they had not always been great days for me. Sullivan-Thorpe pays tribute to her friends who have stuck by her throughout her darkest times - and her golden retriever George 'He was an unintentional Covid dog. Every morning I walk with him. Going through the fertility struggles that I continued with for a few years after that, and then the breakdown of a long-term relationship, it's very easy to want to lay in bed and pull the cover over your eyes and do all those things and wallow. 'But when you have a 30kg dog... you've got to get up. I love that ritual because I have to do something for someone else every day.' Sullivan-Thorpe says she's doing a lot better these days and she owes a lot to her friends who have stood by her through thick and thin. 'I was a shell of a human. I could not have got through it without them,' she said. 'I think a lot about the way they showed up for me. I was incredibly low and incredibly distressed. It was complex and they were there. 'For so long I thought I'd never feel love again. I've never felt more loved, more respected or seen such loyalty in my entire life than I have from my friends. 'And they would go to war for them and I them. And I wake up just going if I can be half a friend they have been to me that is all I could achieve.'

AFL stars Mark and Lachie Hunter's family home sets 2025 record

A Williamstown house that was home to Western Bulldogs father and son players Mark and Lachie Hunter has scored a $4.6m sale. Former Footscray footballer turned horse racing form analyst and RSN radio network professional punter Mark and his wife Colleen, who represented Australia in four lacrosse World Cups, bought the property more than 15 years ago. Their three children, including Lachie, lived at the four-bedroom abode but have grown up and flown the nest. Mark played 130 games with Footscray throughout the 1980s and 1990s, while Lachie notched up 173 Bulldogs' games. Aside from playing in the club's 2016 grand final victory against the Swans, Lachie was a Charles Sutton Medallist, a Gary Dempsey Medallist and won a 2015 Rose–Sutton Medal. For five consecutive years, he placed in the top 10 of the Bulldogs best and fairest voting. In 2023-24, Lachie also played 26 games for the Demons before announcing his retirement. The Hunters' recently-sold residence at 74 Morris St features a lift, pool with its own pavilion, home theatre and bay views. Jellis Craig Inner West's Greg Cusack said a variety of buyers had inquired about the house. Among them were families seeking multi-generational living arrangements and St Kilda-based purchaser who wanting to live somewhere with water views for six months of the year. Buyers from Albert Park, Middle Park, Aberfeldie and Essendon also checked out the property but it was snapped up by a family who lived nearby. 'They fell in love with the views, they were looking at extending and renovating their own home but building costs meant it made more sense to buy this one,' Mr Cusack said. The house has recorded Williamstown's priciest residential sale of 2025, surging past the $4.15m sum that a three-bedroom pad at 2/25 The Strand fetched in May. Mr Cusack said that Williamstown, in Melbourne's western suburbs, used to be something of a hidden gem but this had changed in recent years. 'Buyers outside of Williamstown are now looking to buy in Williamstown, it's a changing of the guard,' he added. 'What we are seeing across our network is that buyers are specific on price but not postcode.'

Bulldogs great Mark Hunter lists $4m+ Williamstown home

The striking family home of AFL father and son duo Mark and Lachie Hunter, as well as lacrosse World Cup player Colleen Hunter, has been listed for sale in Williamstown. A Footscray Football Club stalwart who played 130 games with the side from 1988-1996, Mark Hunter has gone on to a post footy career as a horse racing form analyst and professional punter with the RSN radio network. His son, Lachie, who grew up in the home for several years, played 173 games with the Bulldogs including their premiership win in 2016. He also collected the clubs best and fairest Charles Sutton Medal in 2018, and played 26 games for the Melbourne Football Club from 2023-2024. But the family home at 74 Morris St, Williamstown, is now just home to Mr Hunter and his wife Colleen — who represented Australia in four lacrosse World Cups. So they have decided to list the 953sq m property for sale, with a $4.35m-$4.75m asking price. The house has had a substantial overhaul since the pair bought it as a beach shack in 2007 for $1.78m, with a striking, angular facade making a big first impression that continues inside. The property now includes a four-bedroom floorplan with a lift between its two levels, as well as a pool and spa deck. A home theatre at the rear spills out to the pool area, while the main bedroom also has a view of the water feature. But day-to-day life is centred on the upper floor where an open-plan living and dining zone, with a smart kitchen at one end, is set between two balconies. Jellis Craig Inner West's Sam Wilson and Greg Cusack are handling the sale. Mr Cusack said after two weeks on the market the home had attracted strong numbers of interested buyers, with the 'overwhelming appeal' thanks to the property's location and views. The agent said one buyer in particular was eyeing the home office with the view across the Downer Oval home of the VFL's Williamstown Seagulls to an impressive water vista as the perfect work-from-home space. 'They love the idea of sitting upstairs in the study where they can enjoy the view,' Mr Cusack said. 'And with the space in the living zones and the ceiling heights give it a real feeling of space.' While many of the buyers were locals, some were coming from across 'the bridge' from suburbs including Fitzroy, Carlton and Richmond. Others were eyeing the home from Essendon. Expressions of interest for the home at No. 74 Morris St close at 5pm, June 12. While the Hunters have loved their time at the home, they are renewing their plans to sell after realising they weren't quite ready to part ways with it during an earlier sales campaign in 2021.
