And 'Metro…In Dino' does it in the best possible way with a warm hug. The mood of this film is sometimes somber, but mostly bright. The simple stories of each relationship that we are aware of and weaving it all together are what make this film such a work of genius. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Edited excerpts from the interview: How much did you miss Irrfan Khan for this film, **_Metro Dino_****, since he was in your previous Metro as the lead?** When you're busy shooting, you just enter the mood of the film, but there were moments and there were scenes, which resonated with the old Metro. Konkona missed him more than I did. There was a scene and she just connected. There were moments here and there during the shooting, we really missed him and by the end of it, when the film got ready and we saw the final print, we're missing him all the more. How did you decide on the star-cast for the film? So, it was very easy. Pankaj Tripathi automatically came because we were working in Ludo. Aditya Roy Kapur was also working in the film. So, all these people, they automatically became part of Metro…In Dino. And then as for Ali Fazal, I was traveling with his wife Richa and took his number from her and called him. I got all my actors who were my first choice. And I was very lucky that I hit the jackpot. I had everybody say yes. And, I didn't have to go for a plan B for castings. This was the first choice for all the characters. The story of Ali and Fatima, I actually like that the most because this is a little different, and this is quite a bit of a toxic love. So, did you have anybody in mind when you were doing these little just love stories and putting it all together? Most of the story is about my today and my past and my tomorrow, and, you know, this is how you shape films and also get inspired from the lives of friends, cousins and all real characters around you into the film and deal with stories and characters. Our lives are actually very similar to those shown in this film. It is all floating around me, I didn't really work very hard to get these stories together. On connecting the stories together… I didn't flex my muscles too much. I can try to impress you with how I've linked this to that story. This is how they overlap. It's a simple story. So, this time, they are connected, organically, not so much. I didn't overdo it. And, this is how life is. Right now, we look into our lives. Our stories are connected with our parents and our sisters and cousins. I think it's just an extension of what we go through. Indirectly, our lives are connected and it does get affected by others. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD You wanted to keep this as a musical? Yes. That was the first idea, actually. And, because of this, the first ten minutes of the film, I really wanted the audience to root, with the characters. I felt that helped the audiences to understand the characters better. And, also, I wanted them to get used to the kind of narrative they are going to see in the film which is to be followed. So, it was a tough choice. The method you use when directing a film… I want my actors to be very happy on the set and know their character well. I don't give too much information to them before the shoot begins. Let them discover their roles and this is the method I have been following since ages. There is a lot of chatter on work-life balance and the eight-hour shift put forward by Deepika Padukone, what do you have to say about that? In an EXCLUSIVE interview with Firstpost, he talks about how the show has evolved, working with the team and more. Edited excerpts from the interview: How does it feel to come back after a gap of over two years? It's a character that got so much love, so much appreciation and it had such a large audience. Being able to live that one more time is fun. This time the story is more personal and the stakes are higher. It is much more fun and it is exciting to get back. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Rana you made your OTT debut with Netflix 's Rana Naidu Season 1 two years back… was it a conscious decision? When I did it for the first time, I didn't know enough of it to miss it. Rana Naidu was a pandemic idea. We also run cinemas and all of them were shut and I have a FOMO problem. So, I was like 'How do I be a part of a show?' The Bombay film industry has done a lot more shows. The south is prevalent also. In the south we had no reference to it. A bunch of directors came together and tried to write a series. None of us knew how to do this. Sundar was the first to connect for the license of an International show. From there the group got together. Karan Anshumann got on board and I got excited. What do you have to say about your journey with Rana Naidu? The show is about a family, but it is the most dysfunctional family there could be. It played out in the long format in very beautiful ways. These are the people you want to keep knowing. This is something you can never recreate in a movie. In this landscape, it's almost like a life journey. And that was the reason why it was so exciting for me to do it. I'm really happy that season one did really well and we continue the journey. On the look of the show and the characters It starts with the writing because the brief is so clear. Karan is extremely detailed in that way. He has been so specific about every minute thing including the brand of the watch of the character was also mentioned in the script. Fashion Police! How an Indian label is preserving and showcasing the rich textile heritage of Odisha
In an interview with Firstpost's Lachmi Deb Roy, a few days ahead of World Environment Day, designer Richa Maheshwari who believes in restoring, preserving and showcasing the rich textile heritage of Odisha spoke about conscious consumption and ways to reduce fashion pollution. read more Richa Maheshwari's collection Boito is a conscious luxury clothing from Odisha. Through a personal journey of discovery, Boito was born out of a desire to preserve these stories and honour this history. Her design philosophy is rooted in the belief that handloom and traditional textiles are the ultimate sustainable choice. We have seen filmmaker Guneet Monga wearing her collection at the Toronto International Film Festival and even filmmaker Rima Das wore her collection at Cannes. She would love to style Meryl Streep in the Niyam Raja overcoat and Bomkai Gold Dress. The Kotpad Jacket with the Boatneck Khandua Jumpsuit would be her choice for Susan Sarandon. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Odisha's indigenous textiles are leisurely woven using age-old techniques - unchanged for generations. The colours and patterns tell the tales communities have inherited, weaving a unique timelessness into their cloth. The name Boito is derived from the maritime festival 'Boita Bandana' (Worship of the Boats), which commemorates the voyage of the Sadhabas - an ancient community of affluent mariner merchants, who would sail to distant lands for trade and cultural exchange. Restoring, preserving and showcasing the rich textile heritage of Odisha You have been doing a lot of work with weaves … tell us a little about that…When did you start working with Odisha weaves ? What fascinated you? My journey with Boito started in June 2022. I took a sabbatical to explore Odisha, travelling across every vein and artery of my home state. The people I met often lived in remote rural areas - near mountains, forests or the sea. What struck me was how deeply connected they are to their surroundings - which reflects in all aspects of their lives, including textiles. It was this rootedness that fascinated me, I guess in part because I myself was searching for my roots. The stories that are woven or embroidered onto traditional fabrics have existed for eons - solely because populations tend to stay put in the same village or town for generations. You will not find a Sambalpuri cluster on the east coast for example, or a Khandua cluster on the west coast. The narratives are spiritually and culturally richer for this reason - and distinct from each other. This raw unadulterated storytelling was what inspired me to work with Odisha's textiles. What are the different types of weaves of Odisha that you use? So far, our garments have been designed using eight different traditional textiles, namely: Bomkai, Habaspuri, Kapdaganda, Khandua, Kotpad, Pipli, Ringa and Sambalpuri. We are actively collaborating with other clusters to employ them for future collections. India is the land of textiles… your take and how you are promoting it Textile clusters across the country are like living museums - keeping age-old traditions and tales alive. Essentially, Boito exists to connect these traditions to a wider audience outside the state or the country - who appreciate the artistry and cultural value of Odisha's textiles. We feel that fashion naturally provides the ideal vehicle for this promotion. India's handloom industry is second only to agriculture in terms of numbers employed. We want to tap into this resource and give it a platform in the luxury retail space so as not to promote overconsumption. On the ground, we are working to instill financial stability so the next generation of weavers may carry forward their craft with pride. Working with Habaspuri weavers, for example, was an exciting milestone for our label, as only some half a dozen of the textile's looms remain today. A decade ago, there were over 100. It is important, however, to be sensitive in our endeavour. There's a reason why some textile traditions have faded out in the first place. Our approach is to understand and tackle these challenges holistically, so that the revival may be sustained. We're not looking at scale - as the nature of handloom does not realistically allow for that. We cannot break weavers' backs to meet some kind of market demand or supply chain. We want to promote these textiles as art - so that they are cherished. The core of what we do is connecting the work of artisan communities with a global community of art collectors as it were - who would appreciate their skill, artistry, culture and history. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD How local are we getting when it comes to fashion? I would say in fact that the textiles we use are hyper local. The motifs and techniques are very specific to the clusters we work with. There is absolutely no outside influence. For instance, the flora and fauna depicted in different weaves depend on whether the clusters are landlocked or near the coast. The colours and patterns embroidered on a kapdaganda shawl reflect the unique relationship between the Dongria Kondha community and the Niyamgiri hills. The dyes used in Kotpad handloom are extracted exclusively from the locally grown Indian madder (aal) tree. Of Odisha's 26 current GI tags, 11 are for textiles alone - meaning that they are unique to that specific district or town. Also - while our designs may be for a global market, our production is based entirely in Odisha. To truly honour the crafts of the state, we must give back to it. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD What do you have to say about the business of fashion? I think consumers are far more conscientious than ever before, thanks in large part to easy access to information. They are more aware about making sustainable choices, ethical sourcing and the perils of fast fashion. Today, people actually care about how their clothes were made and where. As a result, there is also more interest in heritage and storytelling - which is great for brands like Boito. While fast fashion and greenwashing are still major challenges faced by the industry, there has been a slow and steady shift underway from a use-and-throw culture to one where authenticity, quality and longevity are aspirational. Your take on conscious consumption … Our design philosophy is rooted in our belief that handloom and traditional textiles are the ultimate sustainable choice. We have said repeatedly that they are the literal antithesis of fast fashion. Our garments are heirloom pieces, designed to be loved and passed down. Processes are slow, deliberate and transparent. Orders have a wait period of several weeks. So, our clients are very aware of the investment they are making with us. We take that trust very seriously, and work hard to value and reciprocate it. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Fashion vs Style… your preference and how is it different? What is in fashion is generally dictated by what designers showcase as part of their collections, which then trickles down into popular culture and into high-street showrooms. Style on the other hand is a lot more individualistic, and allows for a creative flair in how we wear, mix and match our garments. Fashion changes, style roots! Boito consciously leans into the latter for this reason. We look at adding meaning, not momentum. Our garments are designed to be worn creatively, and I love seeing how different people wear the same garment in their own unique way. Your favourite style icon from Bollywood? And how would you like to dress him/her up? For me, the ultimate Indian style icon was Maharani Gayatri Devi. There are a series of photographs of her with Jackie Kennedy (another favourite). I would have loved to see those iconic chiffon sarees and sunglasses paired with a Boito scarf. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD From Bollywood, I'm drawn to yesteryear actresses such as Smita Patil, Waheeda Rehman and Sharmila Tagore - who would all look fabulous in any one of our jackets or overcoats. Last year, we had the absolute thrill of having the Zeenat Aman styled in our chequered gold trench coat for a photoshoot. Your favourite style icon from Hollywood and how would you like to dress him/her up? Meryl Streep and Susan Sarandon are absolute legends, and they look good in anything they wear. I would perhaps style Meryl in the Niyam Raja Overcoat and Bomkai Gold Dress. The Kotpad Jacket with the Boatneck Khandua Jumpsuit would be my choice for Sarandon. I also love Amal Clooney, and it is my dream to dress her and her husband for the red carpet one day.

Edited excerpts from the interview: How did you prepare yourself for playing a person from the LGBTQ community in The Royals ? I approached my character like a love story and didn't worry so much about how to deliver the LGBTQ aspect of it because that could easily become a caricature. It was just treated with dignity and that is where the authenticity lies and we all fall in love the same way. I had the easier job because I play the character that is already out. I didn't have to think about the backstory of my coming out until Jinny (my partner in the show) sort of starts questioning herself. I have many friends who are from the LGBTQ community, hence that helped me play the role in such a way that it doesn't come out as a mockery or a mimicry of them. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD You were there in Call Me Bae… so how do you make the shift from one character to another because in The Royal your role is very different as compared to Bae? Both my characters in both shows are very similar because they are in corporate spaces. I was lucky to carry a little bit of Harleen from Call Me Bae into my character as Nikki in The Royals because both the characters are empowered and confident women in workspaces. I brought that out in my latest show in The Royals. There is a little commonality in who champions each other. Here I had the liberty to be a little bit more comedic unlike Call Me Bae because here I don't play the boss. Women solidarity or sisterhood is being shown in a big way in all the movies, what do you have to say about that? I am loving the way women's solidarity is now being shown in movies and series because, for a long time, we have seen women competing for male attention. I am happy to see solid female friendship being brought into Indian cinema. I want to see more of this in movies where women support each other rather than trying to put down each other. The more we see this on screen the better it is. There are enough seats at the table. There are plenty of rooms for all women. Acting to me now is definitely more challenging. I am confident with music because I have done it since I was four-years-old. It's like breathing for me; I don't have to think twice as a musician nowadays. But in the case of acting, I have a long way to go and keep learning from the people who I work with. I need to attend workshops too. In an EXCLUSIVE interview with Firstpost, Pratik Gandhi talks about the fim, preparation for the role and more. Edited excerpts from the interview: STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD What were the pressures of playing a real-life character? Rather than pressure, I guess, the only certain concerns which were there in our mind as a team is that let's not make these characters unidirectional by just talking about popular opinions about their life. You know, we always wanted to create human stories around their life, which we have tried to a large extent. Because their achievements in whatever they've done as far as the social reforms are known to people. How they have done, what must have happened in their mind and in their hearts when they're doing this is what we try to achieve. The trailer is quite impressive. It may decide the success of the movie. But then, you know, now the theatre going audience is also very different. So we really don't know what they expect out of the movie… Box-office success is a different game altogether, but what are your expectations? I want this particular film to reach the maximum audience as a story. As a journey of these two exceptionally, revolutionary people. Those who changed the social norms in India. Those who have got the reforms that have made our lives today. As a storyteller, as an artist, as an actor, I want this story to reach a larger audience. That's what I want. But as far as box office is concerned, I have no understanding of box office. But then, that's what most of the trade experts can tell us better. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Since you dealt with this character, are there any layers in his character or like any other human or some grey shades, anything about him that he was stubborn or headstrong? Headstrong, yes, because if he hadn't been a headstrong person, he couldn't have achieved what he's achieved. So you need to be firm at some point. And headstrong at certain points. Even at the cost of your own life or your own loved ones' lives. And because it was a too hostile a situation back then, the moment you talk about any strict societal norms. And if you want to go against it. That is something which is connected to religion, and then it makes it even more difficult to ask questions against. And, how much impact did Phule play in your life? How much similarities do you find in him and yourself? I think that if I have to talk about similarities, it's a little stubborn approach towards something that you want so badly or you want to change. I too have that kind of an attitude. He did it for society. The only difference being, I did it for myself. I see myself as a very selfish person. Because I also wanted to break the norm of just getting into a comfortable job and lead a comfortable life. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD
