Kaamatan, Gawai Festivals bolster Bornean unity - Hajiji
Joachim (fourth left) received a token of appreciation from Kadazandusun Chamber of Commerce and Industry president Datuk Ladislaus Maluda. PENAMPANG (June 29): The Kaamatan and Gawai festivals are not mere celebrations of gratitude because they also serve as a platform to enhance the cultural bond between the people of Sabah and Sarawak, said Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor. He said that the close ties between the two states must be preserved, as they constitute the core of unity and harmony among the multiracial communities in East Malaysia. 'Sabah and Sarawak not only share borders but also a Bornean identity steeped in culture, customs, and traditions. We must enhance this bond for our progress and well-being,' he said in a speech at the Kaamatan-Gawai 2025 gala dinner here on Saturday night. The speech was delivered on his behalf by Deputy Chief Minister II, Datuk Seri Dr Joachim Gunsalam, who also serves as the Sabah Minister of Local Government and Housing. Hajiji said the state government welcomes close cooperation with the Sarawak government across various sectors, including the economy, education, investment, and cultural exchange, particularly involving the participation of the younger generation. He also emphasised that unity and tolerance among different races and religions are key strengths of the nation, qualities that are increasingly rare in many other countries today. 'Racial unity must be reinforced so that future generations understand that Malaysia is a nation for all its people, regardless of background,' he added.

Bright prospects for east coast
Published on: Sunday, June 29, 2025 Published on: Sun, Jun 29, 2025 Text Size: 'The goal is for Sabah to become not just a place where oil and gas is extracted, but a regional hub for oil and gas services and innovation," Masidi said. MASIDI said more international oil companies are showing interest in Sabah, citing ConocoPhillips which has already started exploration work in northeast Sabah, while other American companies are considering investments. 'This expansion could benefit the East Coast which has not seen much oil industry activity compared to the west coast. 'In the not-too-distant future, the people in the east of Sabah will eventually get the benefits of the oil industry,' Masidi said. Sabah produces nearly 40 per cent of Malaysia's oil and close to 20 per cent of its gas, making it important for the country's energy needs. 'Sabah is blessed with abundant natural resources that are important contributors to the country's energy sector,' he said. Masidi also noted the recent agreement between Malaysia and Indonesia about disputed sea areas, whereby instead of fighting over who owns what, both countries will work together to extract oil and gas from overlapping claim areas. 'Instead of both losing, why not we jointly exploit the area claimed by both countries. You get some, we get some,' he said, adding that this could bring more business to Tawau and Lahad Datu. Looking forward, Masidi urged local businesses to keep improving their skills and work together on bigger projects. 'Our commitment to prioritising Sabahan companies remains paramount. However, this requires local businesses to actively invest in enhancing capabilities, forge strategic partnerships and embrace innovation,' he said. He urged business chambers to be bold, be visionary and be future-ready, encouraging companies to form partnerships that combine local knowledge with international expertise. 'The goal is for Sabah to become not just a place where oil and gas is extracted, but a regional hub for oil and gas services and innovation. 'Let us work together to usher in a new chapter for Sabah's oil and gas industry, one defined by greater empowerment, genuine inclusivity and local participation,' he said. KCCI President Datuk Ladislaus Maluda said the forum aims to foster collaboration and discuss market trends and industry investment opportunities, especially in oil and gas. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? KCCI hosts 16th Kaamatan Gawai celebration with Borneo Country Music Fest
Ladislaus (seated middle) with KCCI officials who are also part of the organising committee of the celebration. PENAMPANG (June 11): Kadazandusun Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) will play host to the 16th KCCI-DCCI (Dayak Chamber of Commerce and Industry) joint Kaamatan Gawai celebration. KCCI President Datuk Ladislaus Maluda said the event will be held on June 27 and 28 and they are expecting about 300 members from DCCI to attend the celebration. 'This year, we are holding the Borneo Country Music Fest (BCMF) as part of the celebration. It will be held at Buhavan Square on June 27 and will feature four top bands, one each from Sabah and Kalimantan as well as two from Sarawak. 'They will be performing on the evening of June 27. During the day, bands from four schools, SMK Limbanak, SM St Michael and the Pre University in Menggatal will be showcasing their talents in the country music genre,' Ladislaus told a press conference on Monday. According to him, the BCMF is not only about music, it is also a venue for local entrepreneurs to do business and promote their products as there will be about 40 stalls operating in Buhavan Square on the same day. 'This fest will provide a significant stage for local musicians, food and beverage providers as well as performers to showcase their talents and products. BCMF can also inspire young people to pursue music, culinary arts or event management. 'It could also set a precedent for future innovative cultural events in the region, positioning Penampang as a hub for creativity and entertainment,' he added. Ladislaus disclosed that on June 27, the joint celebration will kick off with a golf tournament at Sutera Harbour Golf and Country Club where KCCI and DCCI will be sending 32 golfers each to vie for the Datuk Seri Panglima Dr Joachim Gunsalam Challenge Trophy. Prize presentation for the tournament will be held during the BCMF, Ladislaus said. On June 28 morning, the celebration continues with a forum on the business opportunities in the oil and gas industry which will be held at the ITCC grand ballroom. Finance Minister Datuk Seri Panglima Masidi Manjun is expected to officiate the event. And in the evening, the KCCI-DCCI joint Kaamatan Gawai celebration will culminate with a dinner at the same venue where the four country music bands will also be performing. KCCI, Ladislaus said, has extended an invitation to Chief Minister Datuk Seri Panglima Hajiji Noor to grace the celebration.

Donggongon Saturday night market
Published on: Monday, April 28, 2025 Published on: Mon, Apr 28, 2025 By: Lorena Binisol Text Size: People buying food from the stalls. PENAMPANG: A Saturday night market has added vibrancy and excitement to Donggongon township, a joint collaboration between the Kadazandusun Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) and the Penampang Municipal Council. KCCI President Datuk Ladislaus Maluda said the initiative aims at creating a lively and entertaining atmosphere for both the local community and visitors. 'We have a day market, but not a night market. There was one organised many years ago but did not last long for reasons unknown,' he said at the launch. 'Today, we want to make a difference. We want to create an atmosphere that is not only entertaining but also enjoyable for everyone.' It would focus on promoting key items such as food and local crafts. 'We have many young entrepreneurs who have developed various types of food. This is a good platform for them to showcase their talents in food preparation, gain exposure and do a little business at the same time,' he said. He said besides culinary creativity, the night market would also feature crafts, souvenirs and other locally made products, mainly targeting tourists. 'There will be entertainment with a difference — something fresh and exciting,' he said. A minimal fee is charged for each vendor. If the response is positive, it would be extended to Sundays as well. Patrons were entertained by the local Evergreen Hybrid Country Band while 55 stalls were busy offering a wide variety of food and drinks. Ladislaus said KCCI has mobilised promotion teams to reach out and promote the night market to a wider audience. 'It is not just an event, rather a community celebration,' he added. * Follow us on Instagram and join our Telegram and/or WhatsApp channel(s) for the latest news you don't want to miss. * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
