Unity ministry rolls out 25 initiatives to boost social cohesion in Malaysia
KUALA LUMPUR: The Ministry of National Unity has introduced 25 initiatives between May and June this year to enhance unity and social cohesion among Malaysia's diverse communities. Minister Datuk Aaron Ago Dagang shared details of the programmes in a Facebook post, highlighting events such as the 'Fiesta Uniti' at the Perak Museum, the 'Lagu Kita' concert in Sabah, and the 'Dariku Untukmu' reading initiative for Tamil national-type school students. The ministry also celebrated Gawai Day and Kaamatan Festival to foster cultural appreciation. Other efforts included the Arkib@Sekolah programme, aimed at deepening students' understanding of national history. According to Aaron, these initiatives focus on grassroots engagement to build long-term unity in Malaysia's multiracial society. Sabah's multicultural harmony inspires national unity model
KOTA KINABALU: Sabah's diverse cultural landscape should inspire national unity, said National Unity Minister Datuk Aaron Ago Dagang today. Speaking at the 'Lagu Kita' Sabah Multicultural Songwriting and Band Competition finale, he praised the state's 42 indigenous ethnic groups and over 200 subethnic communities for fostering harmony. 'Sabah is not just about numbers. It is a living example of how respect and unity thrive amid diversity,' he said. The competition, launched in June 2024, promotes cultural expression through music, supported by a RM30,000 ministry grant. Aaron emphasised music's role as a universal bridge, transcending language and tradition. 'This initiative empowers youth to celebrate heritage while strengthening national cohesion,' he added.

He said each group, no matter how small, contributes to the rich mosaic that makes Sabah a living symbol of Malaysia's multicultural strength. 'Sabah is home to 42 distinct indigenous ethnic groups and over 200 subethnic communities, each of which preserves a unique language, heritage and worldview. 'This is not just a statistic, it is a profound reflection of how deeply rooted harmony and respect for differences are in Sabah's identity,' he said in his speech at the Grand Finale of the 'Lagu Kita'- Sabah Multicultural Songwriting and Band Competition here on Sunday night. The competition was first conceived in June 2024 with the noble aim of celebrating Sabah's rich cultural diversity and empowering young talents through the creation of original music, he said. 'Recognising the value and potential of this initiative, my ministry was pleased to support it with a grant of RM30,000,' he said, adding that music serves as a universal language, a bridge across languages, faiths, and customs. – Bernama
