Owners of pet lion arrested after it jumped a wall and attacked a woman and two children in Pakistan
The owners of a pet lion that jumped a wall and attacked a woman and two children in the Pakistani city of Lahore have been arrested. The woman and her two young children, aged 5 and 7, were taken to hospital, after being attacked in an alleyway when the lion escaped from a farmhouse in the neighborhood of Johan town on Thursday. Security camera footage released by police showed the lion leaping over a concrete wall and pouncing on a woman from behind, knocking her to the ground. A man can be seen running out of the property the lion escaped from with an object in hand and chasing the lion away from the woman, before the wild cat takes off further down the road where the children were attacked. They sustained injuries to their faces and arms but are now in stable condition, according to the Associated Press news agency. Lahore police said in a video posted to social media that the lion had escaped from an open cage at the farmhouse and that it was recaptured by the owners, who promptly put it in a vehicle and went into hiding in another district. Muhammad Faisal Kamran, Deputy Inspector General of Lahore Police Operations, said three people were arrested on Friday morning. 'We've also captured the lion and transferred it to Wildlife authorities,' Kamran said. Lahore police shared an image of three men in a police cell and video of the lion in a cage. Local media reported that the owner did not have a license to keep the lion and would be prosecuted under the Wildlife Act, meaning they could face a maximum prison term of seven years or a fine equating to $17,500. CNN has sought confirmation from the Punjab Wildlife and Parks department. Owning wild cats as pets is seen as a status symbol in Pakistan and is not uncommon, but a license is required, and large cats must be kept outside city limits. 'This unfortunate incident highlights how wild animals are often kept in such places without a license, or permission — with no legal procedures followed — endangering the lives of many people,' Kamran said. The Punjab government announced Sunday that it was undertaking a province-wide crackdown on those keeping lions without a license. So far, 13 lions have been captured and five individuals arrested in connection with violating wildlife regulations.

CM Maryam lauds police performance
LAHORE: Chief Minister Punjab Maryam Nawaz Sharif has appreciated the Lahore Police for curbing crime rate in Lahore. The CM met IGP Dr Usman Anwar, CCPO Bilal Siddique Kamyana, DIG Administration Imran Kishwar, DIG Operations Faisal Kamran and DIG Investigation Zeeshan Raza. She also hosted a luncheon for the police team. The Chief Minister appreciated the efforts of the police in the reduction of crime rate in Lahore. She underscored that protection of the life and property of every citizen is the foremost responsibility of the state. She urged the citizens to cooperate and support the police in order to establish and maintain law and order across Punjab. She said, 'By introducing ranking system in the Police department, crime rate in Lahore and other cities is on the decline. The crime graph coming down is the result of excellent policing.' She appreciated, 'Lahore Police Operation Wing's laudable performance in the 'Crime Index' has made it a safe city as compared to London and New York cities. It is a great milestone for the Lahore Police and the Punjab government. Lahore city has been included in the Safe City category due to adopting excellent strategy in combating crime.' The CM added, 'Despite facing enormous challenges with regard to maintaining law and order in the province, achieving crime reduction target speak volumes of excellent teamwork and CTD has been activated in this regard. Every city, including Lahore, will be made the safest.' She maintained, 'By introducing 'Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)' the performance of the police and administration has significantly improved. Pakistan to thwart every enemy plot, says Punjab minister
LAHORE: Punjab Information Minister Azma Bokhari has said that the recent Pahalgam incident in Occupied Kashmir, despite the presence of 700,000 Indian troops, is a glaring testament to the Modi government's failure. She added that from Afzal Guru to Pahalgam, every Indian allegation against Pakistan has been debunked, and India has consistently failed to provide credible evidence. Speaking at a press conference at DG ISPR, Azma maintained that India has repeatedly tried to build a false narrative against Pakistan, from the Samjhauta Express bombing to Pathankot and Pulwama attacks, without presenting substantiating proof. She also highlighted that Pakistan's DG ISPR recently exposed India's planted terrorist operatives with concrete evidence. Azma Bokhari noted that even Indian military generals have admitted that several Indian attacks were staged and fabricated. The Pakistani nation and its armed forces remain resolute. The public will soon be informed about issues like the Jaffer Express incident, she said. Referring to recent military tensions, she remarked that the enemy cancelled its planned exercises after Pakistani jets took to the skies, demonstrating Pakistan's readiness. 'Our military doesn't wear the uniform just for a pay check—it stands ever-ready to sacrifice for the nation,' she affirmed. 'Pakistan will thwart every enemy plot and protect every inch of its territory.' She also said Lahore recently achieved global recognition as one of the safest cities in the world. It is now being rated cleaner than New York and Sydney, and by June, with the completion of Safe City projects, all major cities in Punjab will be secured. According to the Number Crime and Safety Index, Lahore has recorded a 50% reduction in crime, with serious crimes like robbery and murder decreasing by 64%. These figures are not government claims but internationally recognized data, she emphasized. Azma said the Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has commended Lahore Police for this achievement and reaffirmed the government's commitment to maintaining law and order. She pointed out that unlike in the past, when depoliticizing the police was just a slogan, the current government has taken practical steps. The success of the Safe Cities Project is evidence of that progress, and by June 2025, the initiative will be implemented across all major cities of Punjab, she added. She further noted that modern safety equipment has been provided to police in South Punjab and border areas—resources they previously lacked. Over the past year, more than 400 police personnel have been held accountable, with disciplinary action and penalties for corruption and negligence. The Minister also announced that Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz would be distributing laptops among students under the Laptop Scheme.
