Two rescued by Coast Guard on Lake Superior
The Coast Guard rescued two from Lake Superior Friday night, per officials. The incident happened near Bayfield, Wisconsin. The Coast Guard says they got a call for a boat taking on water. When they arrived on scene, they pulled two people from the water and got them back to shore. The two on the boat were then checked out by EMS at a nearby marina. Officials did not sure how long the two were in the water or if they were wearing life jackets at the tiem. Both Minnesota and Wisconsin require a life jacket for each person on board. In Minnesota, children 10-years-old and younger must wear a life jacket while a boat is moving.

Swimmers prepped to finish journey of the Edmund Fitzgerald with 411-mile swim
The legend of the Edmund Fitzgerald is well-known on the Great Lakes. On Nov. 10, 1975, the Great Lakes freighter was lost, along with her entire crew of 29 men, in a storm on Lake Superior, 17 miles off Whitefish Point in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. The Edmund Fitzgerald was supposed to finish her fateful voyage in Detroit, and this year that route will finally be crossed. Jim Dreyer is no stranger to big swims, having swum across several Great Lakes. Now, the man known as "The Shark" has organized and will join dozens of swimmers in the Edmund Fitzgerald Memorial Swim. "I want the legacy of these 29 men to live on," Dreyer said. "I was just thinking about the symbolism of all this. We are symbolizing their final journey, their final tragic journey. And I thought, 'How can we make this even more real?'" The would-be last leg of that fateful voyage, remembered through these men and women who will break the waves one stroke at a time, starting on July 26 and lasting one month. The swimmers will be carrying special cargo on their journey. "Those are iron ore pellets from the same dock in Superior, Wisconsin, that loaded the Edmund Fitzgerald for the last time," said Dreyer while Nearly 70 swimmers will embark on the 411-mile swim to Detroit. "It's a tremendous honor. And I know all the swimmers feel that way. I certainly feel that way. I mean, I'm honored and humbled, you know," Dreyer said. "The family members of the Edmund Fitzgerald crew, I've had the opportunity to interact with a number of them, and to me, it really underscores and puts a face on what we're doing and why we're doing it." Each swimmer will carry a GPS tag, allowing followers to track them on a map for every leg. A documentary is also being produced about this swim. A documentary is also being made about the memorial swim.

Idled pulp and paper mill in northern Ont. fined $525K for EPA violations
The mill was the main employer in Terrace Bay -- population 1,600 -- and nearby communities, including Schreiber and Pays Plat First Nation. (Township of Terrace Bay photo) AV Terrace Bay has been fined for two Environmental Protection Act violations related to discharges into the water and air that exceeded guidelines. The Terrace Bay mill, which has been idled since 2024, was fined for separate incidents in 2023. In the first case, the mill was required to ensure that the discharged effluent would have a mortality rate of no more than 50 per cent for test organisms. 'The mill generates industrial effluent that undergoes primary and secondary treatment prior to discharging to Lake Superior via Blackbird Creek,' the Ministry of Environment, Conservation and Parks said in a news release this week. Each month, the mill must test the effluent to ensure it doesn't kill more than 50 per cent of test organisms, in this case, rainbow trout. 'On May 1, 2023, 100 per cent of the rainbow trout died during an acute lethality test performed on a grab sample of the mill's final effluent,' the release said. AV Terrace Bay immediately reported the incident to the ministry, as it is required to do. 'On May 1, 2023, 100 per cent of the rainbow trout died during an acute lethality test performed on a grab sample of the mill's final effluent.' — Ministry of Environment, Conservation and Parks 'On the same day … the company obtained an additional effluent sample and tested it once a week for four weeks with no further reported failures,' meaning the failed test appeared to be 'an isolated incident.' The second violation is related to limits on sulphur emissions, which were violated four times on May 23. Sulphur concentrations in the air can't exceed 27 parts per billion in over a 10-minute average period more than two times in six months. 'AV Terrace Bay breached this prohibition on four occasions in May 2023,' the ministry said. Again, AV Terrace Bay reported the breaches immediately. For the two EPA violations, the company was fined a total of $525,000, plus a victim fine surcharge of $131,250, and given 12 months to pay. AV Terrace Bay Inc. owns and operates a pulp mill on Mill Road in the Township of Terrace Bay. The mill converts wood into pulp using a kraft pulping process. Due to financial constraints and market conditions, the mill has been in a warm idle state and has not been producing product or revenue since at least January 2024.

Olympic gold medalist John Landsteiner steps away from elite curling
John Landsteiner, an Olympic gold medalist and the longest-serving teammate of skip John Shuster, is stepping away from elite-level curling. Landsteiner, a 35-year-old who competed at the last three Olympics, called it "a long, difficult, and heartfelt decision" in a social media post. "As life has progressed during this quad, with the addition of my two young children and my ongoing full-time career as an engineer with Lake Superior Consulting, it has become clear to me that time spent with my family means more than the grind that the run to 2026 will require," the post read. Landsteiner served as the lead for Shuster's team at the last three Olympics, meaning he threw the first two stones of each end. In 2018, Shuster, Landsteiner, Tyler George and Matt Hamilton won the U.S.' first Olympic curling title. George left elite curling after those Games and was replaced on the team by Chris Plys, who had previously been the alternate on Shuster's team at the 2010 Vancouver Games. Hamilton, who made his Olympic debut in 2018, is still on Shuster's team. Colin Hufman, a 2022 Olympic alternate who played one game in Beijing, has been on the active team Shuster roster the last two seasons with Hamilton and Landsteiner taking turns as alternates at major competitions. This past winter, Landsteiner was the alternate as Shuster's team lost in the U.S. Championship semifinals, its first time being beaten for a national title since 2016. The 2026 Olympic Trials are in November in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. The winner will advance to an international tournament in Canada in December to determine the last teams to qualify for the Milan Cortina Games. Shuster, a 42-year-old who made his Olympic debut in Italy in 2006, will bid to make a sixth Winter Olympic team, which would tie the U.S. record across all sports held by retired Nordic combined skier Todd Lodwick. But he will do it without his fellow Duluth, Minnesota, resident Landsteiner, who still plans to play recreationally. "Curling was the sole reason I went to college and now reside in Duluth, MN," Landsteiner's post read. "After my junior career ended, I was fortunate to be asked to play with John Shuster—and the rest was history. Curling has taken me around the world to places I never thought possible and has shaped who I am today." Cory Thiesse, Korey Dropkin clinch 2026 Olympic spot in mixed doubles curling Cory Thiesse and Korey Dropkin will finish high enough at the world championship to earn a spot at the Milan Cortina Games. Barrick Mining advances talks to sell Hemlo gold mine in Canada
Canadian miner Barrick Mining is in advanced discussions to divest its last Canadian gold mine, Hemlo, to Discovery Silver, as the mining sector witnesses a surge in precious metal prices, as reported by Bloomberg. The sale process, initiated in April 2025, is reaching its final stages, although the outcome remains uncertain. Both Toronto-based Barrick and Discovery Silver have yet to comment on the potential transaction. The Hemlo gold mine, situated 35km east of Marathon, Ontario, near Lake Superior along the Trans-Canada Highway, has a production history of more than 21 million ounces of gold. This underground operation has been active for more than three decades. The precious metals market has seen a significant rise in 2025, with gold prices soaring 25% partly due to geopolitical uncertainties, including US trade tariff policies under President Donald Trump. This rally has prompted investors to seek refuge in safe-haven assets, leading to a spate of mining deals. Barrick's decision to sell Hemlo aligns with its strategy to capitalise on the high gold prices, mirroring moves by other mining giants such as Newmont, which has offloaded several smaller mines during the bullion price spike. Discovery Silver, on the other hand, is looking to expand its asset base and acquired Newmont's Porcupine gold mine in Ontario for up to $425m in January. Discovery is an Americas-focused precious metals company, with a varied portfolio that encompasses top-tier gold production assets in and around Timmins, Ontario, Canada. The company also holds complete ownership of the Cordero project in Mexico, which stands as one of the largest silver projects in the development stage globally. "Barrick Mining advances talks to sell Hemlo gold mine in Canada" was originally created and published by Mining Technology, a GlobalData owned brand.
