Three militants killed in ‘encounter' in Pakistan's volatile northwest — police
KARACHI: Three Pakistani Taliban militants were killed in an 'encounter' with police and counter-terrorism department (CTD) personnel in Pakistan's northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) province, the CTD said on Saturday. CTD officials from KP's Bannu district conducted a raid in Lakki Marwat along with local police on intelligence report about the presence of militants, according to a CTD statement. It resulted into a shootout with militants which left three members of the Pakistani Taliban's Tipu Gul group dead, whereas officials seized three Kalashnikovs and hundreds of rounds from the site. 'Bannu CTD wanted the deceased terrorists for their involvement in IED (improvised explosive device) blasts, attacks on police and other serious offenses,' the CTD statement said. Pakistan has struggled to contain a surge in militancy in KP since a fragile truce between the Pakistani Taliban, or the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), and Islamabad broke down in late 2022. The TTP and other militant groups have frequently targeted security forces convoys and check-posts, besides targeted killings and kidnappings of law enforcers and government officials in the region in recent months. Bannu has seen a number of attacks on security forces, while a number of policemen have been killed in targeted killings in Lakki Marwat. Islamabad accuses India of backing militant groups and Afghanistan of allowing the use of its soil for attacks against Pakistan. Kabul and New Delhi deny the allegation.

Gunmen kill two traffic police officers in Pakistan's restive northwest
PESHAWAR: Unidentified gunmen shot dead two traffic police officers in Pakistan's northwestern district of Lakki Marwat on Tuesday, the latest in a series of attacks in a region with a long history of militant violence, according to an official statement. The officers were ambushed on Longkhel Road near Gulbaz Dehqan village while they were en route to duty. No group has claimed responsibility, but similar shootings in the past have frequently been carried out by militants from Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), which remains active in the area. 'We share the grief of the bereaved families,' Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur said in a statement, confirming that two traffic police officers had been killed 'after unidentified assailants opened fire on them.' 'The families of the martyrs will not be left alone and will be fully supported,' he added while directing law enforcement agencies to arrest those responsible without delay. Lakki Marwat, located near the Pakistan-Afghanistan border, has witnessed repeated assaults on police along with other government functionaries and residents in recent years. In 2022, six officers were killed in a TTP-claimed ambush, and in 2023, a police station was attacked with guns and explosives, killing four. The district was also the site of one of Pakistan's deadliest militant attacks in 2010, when a suicide bomber targeted a volleyball match, killing over 100 people. Authorities in the area have struggled to maintain security amid a resurgence of insurgent violence I recent years.

Two soldiers killed as militants ambush security forces convoy in northwest Pakistan— army
ISLAMABAD: Pakistan military's media wing said on Monday that two soldiers were killed were militants ambushed a security forces' convoy in the country's northwestern province bordering Afghanistan. The Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) said it conducted an intelligence-based operation (IBO) in the northwestern Lakki Marwat district on Sunday night, where five Pakistani Taliban militants were killed. In the second IBO in the northwestern Bannu district, the military said two militants were killed by security forces. However, in the North Waziristan district, Pakistani Taliban militants ambushed a security forces convoy in which two militants were killed and also two soldiers. 'However, during the intense fire exchange, two brave sons of soil, Sepoy Farhad Ali Turi (age: 29 years, resident of District Kurram) and Lance Naik Sabir Afridi (age: 32 years, resident of District Kohat) having fought gallantly, paid the ultimate sacrifice and embraced shahadat [martyrdom],' the ISPR said. The military's media wing said sanitization operations were being conducted to eliminate any other 'Khawarji' found in the area, the term the army uses for Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) or Pakistani Taliban militants. 'Security forces of Pakistan are determined to wipe out the menace of terrorism perpetrated by Indian proxies, and such sacrifices of our brave soldiers further strengthen our resolve,' the ISPR said. The Pakistan military described TTP militants as 'Indian-sponsored,' emphasizing its earlier allegations that New Delhi funds and arms militants in Pakistan. India, however, denies using militant proxies in Pakistan. Pakistan has struggled to contain a surge in militancy in KP since a fragile truce between the Pakistani Taliban and Islamabad broke down in November 2022. The TTP and other militant groups have frequently targeted security forces convoys and check-posts, besides carrying out targeted killings and kidnappings of law enforcers and government officials in recent months. Pakistan says the takeover of Kabul by the Afghan Taliban in 2021 has emboldened the TTP as it is able to operate out of and launch attacks from safe havens in neighboring Afghanistan. Kabul denies the allegation.
