"He lost all the people that he loved" - Ex-Lakers' trainer on what led to Lamar Odom's near-death brothel experience

"He lost all the people that he loved" - Ex-Lakers' trainer on what led to Lamar Odom's near-death brothel experience originally appeared on Basketball Network. On October 15, 2015, the NBA community and the sports world were rocked by the news of two-time NBA champion Lamar Odom being found unconscious in a brothel in Las Vegas. Advertisement For many, it was a shocking and heartbreaking moment, as Odom had been known for his incredible talent on the basketball court and his marriage to celebrity Khloe Kardashian. But for those who were close to him, this incident was not entirely surprising. Gary Vitti, the Los Angeles Lakers' former trainer, shed light on the struggles that Odom had faced in the years leading up to this event. While the latter never failed to be there for others, always helping anyone on his team in need, he also faced many demons and chose to fight them by himself. Trade led Odom down a dark path Odom began his career on a strong note. Selected as the fourth overall pick in the 1999 NBA Draft by the Los Angeles Clippers, he quickly made an impact, finishing third in the Rookie of the Year voting. He went on to have a productive five-year tenure with the Clippers, followed by a successful one-season stint with the Miami Heat. Advertisement However, his career took a drastic turn when he was part of the package the Heat sent to the Lakers in the massive deal involving Shaquille O'Neal. It was with the Purple and Gold that Odom hit his stride, playing a key role in their back-to-back title wins in 2009 and 2010. The following season, Odom won the prestigious Sixth Man of the Year award. However, in December 2011, his stint with the Lakers came to an end when he was traded to the Dallas Mavericks, a move that ultimately marked the end of his NBA career. "Obviously, we've known Lamar has been struggling emotionally," Vitti shared. "Ever since he was traded from the Lakers, he went downhill. You just couldn't seem to reach him." "He wasn't returning text messages or phone calls. He just sort of dropped out. So when this happened, it was shocking when we heard this news that Lamar was practically dead. But at the same time we weren't surprised because we knew how he struggled in life. People have to understand that just because he's got fame and money, that doesn't mean anything. He lost all the people that he loved," he added. From his mother passing away when he was only 12 to his infant son dying when he was just six months old because of sudden infant death syndrome to his divorce from Kardashian, he endured one tragedy after another. According to Cherry Ryder, one of the women Lamar spent time with at the brothel, the latter was just in a lot of pain, and not the kind a physical therapist could heal. Advertisement "He was a very sweet man," she said. "We talked about all the screwed up things that had happened in his life. All of it. Just pain." Luke Walton, Odom's former teammate on the Lakers, revealed that the writing was already on the wall. Despite his best efforts to support his comrade, Odom remained surrounded by an impenetrable wall, shutting out anyone who tried to connect or offer assistance. "We had those talks on the phone, but you can only get so real on the phone. Our talks were always positive. He was trying to get better. He was working out. But when you're face to face with someone and I can look him in the eye, it's different," Walton revealed. "That was the hard thing about it. Lamar was always the guy who was there for you," the son of former NBA great Luke Walton continued. "I'd be depressed about my back and maybe never being able to play again or I was frustrated about being out of the rotation, but if he saw me in a bad mood, he wouldn't even let me leave the practice site without messing with me so I'd go home in a good mood." Advertisement Fortunately for Lamar, he recovered from that ordeal and even shed light on his near-death experience. Khloe Kardashian Says Lamar Odom Divorce Helped Her Cope With ‘Traumatic' Tristan Thompson Scandal

Khloé Kardashian revealed her public divorce from Lamar Odom helped 'prepare' her for the 'next big traumatic' event in her life with now-ex Tristan Thompson — a cheating scandal that rocked her world. The Kardashians star, 41, reminisced on her breakup that she said served as a 'stepping stone' for another hardship she would face during the Wednesday, July 2, episode of her Khloé in Wonder Land podcast. 'It was a great love that was now lost and that whole thing,' Kardashian said in hindsight. 'It was so public, so public that I've never dealt with something like that before, but I dealt with it, and I had my family support and all of that.' Kardashian parted ways with former NBA star Odom, 45, in December 2013 after four years of marriage following their wedding ceremony in September 2009. Their divorce was finalized in December 2016, marking the end of that chapter. The Good American founder said that going through heartbreak in the public eye gave her the strength to carry on after a betrayal from her next partner Thompson, 34, whom she discovered cheated on her right before giving birth to daughter True, now 7, in April 2018. 'Obviously, no one can prepare you for something like that,' the Hulu personality said. 'And it wasn't the cheating. That's like, 'Oh, people get cheated on.' It was more that I was nine months pregnant, I was having a baby two days later, and it was so public and it was everywhere.' 'I think I handled it the best that I knew how because I almost got a little experience of it, or a lot of experience from it, from my divorce with Lamar. So, it sort of prepared me,' she added. Looking back on her past, Kardashian said that her previous experience of finding solace amid discomfort gave her the coping skills she needed to endure such a breach of trust from Thompson. 'If it was just the one-off situation and you have these newly fresh hormones, just trying to be a first-time mom and be present in this moment and experience this moment … I don't know if I would have been able just to handle that isolated incident,' she further explained. 'For how I handled so many of those moments in my life, I'm really proud of myself for the way I handled them,' Kardashian revealed, hinting that it's easier said than done. 'I think when you overcome those experiences, you feel really strong.' Thompson and Kardashian went on to welcome son Tatum, now 2, via surrogate in July 2022 after ending their on-and-off relationship which spanned from 2016 to 2021. They have since placed their focus on maintaining a cordial co-parenting dynamic for their kids.

Khloe Kardashian reveals how Lamar Odom divorce 'prepared' her for split from cheating ex Tristan Thompson

Khloe Kardashian got candid about how her divorce from Lamar Odom 'prepared' her for the very public split from cheating ex Tristan Thompson. The TV personality, 41 - who finally set the record straight on every cosmetic surgery she has had - opened up about the topic on Wednesday's episode of her Khloe In Wonder Land podcast. The reality star was previously married to the former NBA player from 2009 until their divorce in 2016. She then dated Thompson on-and-off from 2016 until the pair separated in 2021 following his affair scandals. As she answered fan questions, Khloe was asked to recall a moment in her life when she felt like the 'strongest version' of herself. 'I don't know if there was one particular moment - I mean, I feel like I've had many moments that sort of prepared me for other situations in my life, where I was able to endure them,' the mom-of-two began. 'So I feel like everything that happens in our lives is meant to happen, and even if they're not all positive situations, I do think that there's steps in why things happen to you.' Khloe then used her past relationship with Lamar as an example and said, 'Me going through such a public divorce and handling that. 'And yes, it was between him and I, and it was a great love that was now lost and that whole thing - it was so public. So public that I've never dealt with something like that before. But I dealt with it and I had my family's support and all of that.' The Good American founder expressed that the situation had been 'a stepping stone' for 'the next big traumatic thing that happened to me. 'Which was when Tristan cheated on me right before I gave birth,' she added, referring to her eldest daughter True, seven. Khloe shares both True and son Tatum, two, with Thompson. The star admitted, 'Obviously no one can prepare you for something like that. And it wasn't the cheating that's like, "Ugh." People get cheated on. 'But it was more that I was nine months pregnant. I was having a baby two days later, and it was so public and it was everywhere.' The media personality continued, 'But I think I handled it the best that I knew how because I almost got a little experience of it, or a lot of experience of it, from my divorce with Lamar. So it sort of prepared me.' Khloe then explained that if it had just been a 'one-off situation,' she doesn't know 'if I would've been able just to handle that isolated incident.' 'So I feel like everything that happens in our lives is meant to happen, and even if they're not all positive situations, I do think that there's steps in why things happen to you,' she added; seen with Lamar in 2012 'Everything prepared me for each experience in my life, and I think when you overcome those experiences, you feel really strong. 'And also for how I handled so many of those moments in my life, I'm really proud of myself for the way I handled them,' she added. Khloe first crossed paths with Odom in August 2009, and they notably tied the knot just one month later in September during a lavish Beverly Hills ceremony. In 2011, the former couple also starred in their own reality series titled Khloe & Lamar which aired for a total of two seasons. After four years of marriage, Khloe filed for divorce from Lamar in 2013 when he was also embroiled in rumors of substance abuse issues. A few years later in 2015 before their divorce was finalized, the TV personality notably rushed to Odom's side when he was rushed to a Las Vegas hospital after being found unconscious in a brothel. Kardashian eventually called off the divorce and the pair spent time together following his hospitalization. But in May 2016, Khloe filed for divorce once again with a source telling People at the time: 'This was always the plan. The divorce has never been officially off. Khloe was waiting for the timing to be right. A few years later in 2015 before their divorce was finalized, the TV personality notably rushed to Odom's side when he was rushed to a Las Vegas hospital after being found unconscious in a brothel; seen in 2010 'She was loyal for a long time and taking care of him, but she's not a babysitter and needs to move on with her life.' The same year her divorce from Lamar was finalized, Khloe then struck up a romance with Tristan Thompson. The former couple began dating in 2016 - and welcomed their first child, True, in April 2018. However, Tristan cheated on the TV personality when she was pregnant with their daughter. After the shock news broke, the pair remained together. In response to a social media user on Twitter that same year, Khloe had expressed, 'You have no knowledge of what goes on in our household or the enormous rebuilding this takes to even coexist.' 'I'm proud of my strength. I appreciate your opinion and I hope you hold that same opinion to everyone else who has stayed in situations.' The following year in 2019, the two split after Thompson kissed Kylie Jenner's on/off BFF Jordyn Woods at a party - but reconciled during the Covid-19 pandemic after they quarantined together. In June 2021, the pair once again ended their relationship, while a source told Us Weekly at the time that the stars 'remain amicable toward each other and will continue to coparent.' Later that same year, Maralee Nichols sued Tristan for child support after she welcomed their son earlier that month. She had become pregnant when Thompson was still dating Khloe - and after taking a paternity test, it was confirmed that he was the father of the baby boy. The basketball pro issued an apology to Khloe, stating, 'you don't deserve this. You don't deserve the heartache and humiliation I have caused you.' 'You don't deserve the way I have treated you over the years. My actions certainly have not lined up with the way I view you. I have the utmost respect and love for you. Regardless of what you may think. Again, I am so incredibly sorry.' On July 28, 2022, the pair welcomed their second child - son Tatum - via surrogate. Along with his son, Theo, whom he shares with Nichols, Thompson is also father to Prince. He welcomed the baby boy with ex, Jordan Craig. Following his numerous cheating scandals, both he and Khloe have seemingly put the past behind them. Last month in June, the pair put on a united front as they took their two children to tennis lessons. And over the past weekend, Khloe joined her famous family to attend the lavish Venice nuptials between Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sanchez. The reality star also recently revealed the cosmetic surgeries she has undergone in the comment section of an Instagram clip shared by founder of JB Aesthetics, Dr. Jonny Betteridge. She then listed out the procedures, which included a nose job, Botox, fillers, soft wave laser for skin tightening and salmon sperm facials.
