Read more: Hong Kong's weather forecaster has issued its first black rainstorm warning of the year as heavy rain hit the city. Showers were particularly heavy on Lamma Island, with severe rainstorms of more than 100mm (4 inches) of hourly rainfall being recorded, the Hong Kong Observatory said. The forecaster called on the public to avoid travelling until the black rainstorm signal was no longer in force and traffic conditions improved. It also warned that heavy rain might bring about flash floods.

For something a little slower-paced, head to a therapeutic plant-based cooking class and lunch on Lamma Island. ‘Marvellous achievement': Hongkongers flock to see Chinese warship Shandong
Hundreds of residents and tourists lined Hong Kong's waterfronts on Thursday morning to catch a glimpse of the Chinese aircraft carrier Shandong and its accompanying strike group entering local waters. Crowds packed the esplanade at the South Horizons private residential estate in Hong Kong Island's Southern district, with many setting up cameras to get pictures of the passing warships. The Shandong was spotted near Lamma Island at 7.17am and is the first Chinese carrier to call at Hong Kong since the Liaoning visited in July 2017 to mark the 20th anniversary of the city's return to Chinese sovereignty. The 70,000-tonne warship was escorted by missile destroyers Yanan and Zhanjiang, and the missile frigate Yuncheng on Thursday, with the carrier hosting a series of tours and cultural exchange activities in the city until Monday next week. The five-day trip also marks the first time one of the country's fully domestically built carriers has visited the city. Military hardware fan Hui Muk-ling, an optometrist in his thirties, said he took the first MTR train from Kowloon Tong at 5.45am to travel to South Horizons just to take pictures of the vessels.

Hong Kong marine officials missed ferry design flaw, disaster inquiry hears
Two Marine Department officials have told a court inquest that they failed to notice a design flaw in a ferry involved in one of Hong Kong's deadliest maritime disasters as they thought they were not required to look for such issues during periodical check-ups. The Coroner's Court on Monday heard oral evidence from three current and former ship inspectors who were involved in checks on the Lamma IV between 1997 and 2009 before it collided with another ferry and sank on October 1, 2012. The Lamma IV was hit by the Sea Smooth ferry in the waters off Lamma Island while carrying 124 HK Electric employees and their relatives to watch National Day fireworks over Victoria Harbour. The Lamma Island-bound Sea Smooth, operated by Hong Kong and Kowloon Ferry, was able to continue its journey to Yung Shue Wan Pier, but the Lamma IV sank in less than two minutes, leading to 39 deaths. The court previously heard that the Lamma IV's initial design from 1995 involved six compartments on the underdeck, with the steering gear compartment and the tank room at the stern separated by a watertight bulkhead. The ferry sank in less than two minutes. Photo: Handout Lo Ngok-ying, a director at Cheoy Lee Shipyards which built the Lamma IV, later decided to introduce a hatch connecting the two rooms without a watertight door to comply with what he thought was a legal requirement on the minimal size of underdeck rooms.
