Manipur's moral imagination takes off after a crash
Twenty-five months after a violent ethnic conflict broke out between Meiteis and KukiZo tribes, and four months into president's rule, the guns have more or less fallen silent in Manipur. There are sighs of relief everywhere, yet none is fooled into believing that this is peace. It is, at best, the proverbial peace of the graveyard. There is little to be surprised about this. The inferno that raged in the state for two years was unprecedented and bloody, claiming over 260 lives and displacing an estimated 60,000 people. There has also been a matching scale of losses of properties to arson attacks, and worse still, the two sides have mutually cleansed each other from their traditional home-grounds. The Meiteis are primarily in the Imphal valley and the Kukis-Zo in the foothills adjoining the valley. In the higher reaches are the Nagas. Probably fatigue and a realisation of the senselessness of continued hostility are ensuring this semblance of calm. But for this 'negative peace', as Johan Galtung called it, to transform into 'positive peace', a reconciliatory process is vital. There can be no gainsaying that horrific atrocities have happened, but in paving a path to reconciliation, both warring sides must first overcome their victimhood syndrome and have the courage to acknowledge they have been both the victims as well as the perpetrators, depending on the locations of riots. Casualty figures bear testimony to this. From day one of the conflict, social media has played a key role in igniting and fueling inflammatory passions. If not for it, in all likelihood, the trouble could have been arrested at Torbung area itself where arson rampages first broke out on the afternoon of May 3, 2023. Terabytes after terabytes of misinformation and disinformation have flooded social media space ever since, making the overall atmosphere corrosive and toxic. Then suddenly, an event of 'terrible beauty' happened to temporarily cleanse Manipur's social media spaces of this toxicity. In a devastating tragedy, on June 12, the London-bound Air India flight crashed soon after take-off from Ahmedabad. Among the cabin crew were two flight attendants from Manipur—one a Kuki, Lamnunthem Singson, 26, and the other a Meitei, Kongbrailatpam Nganthoi Sharma, 20.

When I read the details of the crash and the departed souls, I saw Lamnunthem's name and photo, and I immediately remembered how she had come to audition for my reality show when I was casting.' Among the 241 people on board Air India Flight AI 171, which met with a tragic crash shortly after takeoff, was 26-year-old Lamnunthem Singson. The young crew member lost her life in the devastating incident that shocked the nation. Her mortal remains were transported from Ahmedabad to Dimapur via an IndiGo flight, where grieving family members, local community leaders, and officials gathered at the airport to receive her with solemn respect. Also among the cabin crew victims was 21-year-old Kongbrailatpam Nganthoi Sharma, hailing from Manipur's Thoubal district and a member of the Meitei community. She too lost her life in the fatal crash.

Thousands gathered in her home town to pay tribute and their final respects. Originally from Old Lambulane colony in Imphal, Singson's family relocated to Kangpokpi in 2023 following ethnic violence between the Meitei and Kuki communities in the state.

One person survived the tragedy. The lone survivor was identified as Indian-origin British national Vishwash Kumar Ramesh who was returning to the UK with his brother Ajay Kumar Rakesh, 45, who was in a different row inside the Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner. Meanwhile, 211 victims have been identified so far through DNA matching, while 189 bodies are handed over to their families. Authorities are carrying out DNA tests to establish the identity of the victims as many bodies were charred beyond recognition or severely damaged. Thousands Mourn As Body Of Air India Crew Member Reaches Home In Manipur
In a night heavy with sorrow, silence, and candlelight, the body of Lamnunthem Singson - fondly known as Neonu - finally returned home to Kangpokpi late Thursday evening. At around 9:20 pm yesterday, her body arrived at a heart-wrenching scene in the town, as thousands of townspeople lined the streets to honour their brave daughter, who lost her life in the tragic Air India crash. Under the aegis of the Kangpokpi Town Committee, a human chain and candlelight vigil stretched for kilometres along both sides of National Highway-2. Young and old, men and women, friends and strangers, all stood shoulder to shoulder, holding flickering candles in a silent tribute that lit up the dark night with love and grief. At her residence, a solemn reception with prayer was offered, and the traditional draping of a shawl over her coffin was done. Among the most heartbreaking sights of the evening was her widowed mother, her closest companion, sitting tearfully beside Neonu's lifeless body - her face etched with unspeakable grief, her hands resting gently on the casket, unwilling to let go. The funeral service will begin at 11:00 am today, followed by her burial at the town cemetery later in the afternoon. Kangpokpi, cloaked in mourning, prepares to bid a final farewell to a beloved daughter whose memory will forever remain etched in the heart of her people. 26-year-old Lamnunthem Singson, a dedicated Air India cabin crew member, was among the victims of the ill-fated Air India crash. According to family sources, Singson was not originally scheduled to fly on the ill-fated flight. She stepped in to cover for a colleague who had taken sick leave - a decision that now stands as a heartbreaking twist of fate and a testament to her professionalism and commitment to her job. Just a night before the tragedy, she had spoken to her mother, Nemneilhing Singson, telling her she wanted to sleep early in preparation for her duty the next day. The two, as was their nightly routine, had prayed together over the phone before sleeping, unaware that it would be their final conversation. Born on November 13, 1998, Lamnunthem was the only daughter of her widowed mother and the third among four siblings. Her late father, Lienminlun Singson, had passed away years ago. Following the ethnic violence that engulfed Manipur in May 2023, the Singson family, belonging to the Kuki-Zo community, fled their ancestral home in Imphal's Old Lambulane area and have since lived in a rented house in Kangpokpi district. Despite facing immense challenges, Lamnunthem emerged as the family's sole breadwinner. Her eldest brother, Ngamlienthang, is battling a serious medical condition and is under treatment in Guwahati, while her youngest sibling, Lenjathang, is still too young to work.
