Battery-powered homes support Blatchford's virtual power plant

It's a Canadian first. Article content Edmonton's Blatchford neighbourhood, the former municipal airport site being transformed by the city into a sustainable residential community for urban living, is now home to this country's first energy storage-based virtual power plant. Article content On pace to integrate 100 net zero houses — the project is just in its early stages at a 10 per cent VPP build out, expected to reach 25 per cent growth by the end of this year — the VPP should enhance renewable energy adoption even further in Blatchford and also deliver savings to homeowners, officials said. Article content 'Blatchford is a unique proof of concept for innovations in sustainable urban living and renewable energy — so it's really fitting that this first-of-its-kind integrated VPP is launching right here with one of our homebuilders (Landmark Homes),' said Tom Lumsden, Blatchford's development manager in regards to the VPP launch in late June. 'By combining green-built, highly energy-efficient homes, a fully renewable District Energy Utility and a neighbourhood designed to encourage a vehicle-free lifestyle, Blatchford is emerging as a hub for planet-friendly land development, construction, and technologies.' Article content 'Instead of throwing a pebble in the ocean, we're dropping a boulder into a lake and we can really create ripples,' said Geoff Ferrell, senior vice-president, Global C&I and VPP Project Business, sonnen USA, noting you could describe a VPP as a distributed energy management system. Article content The batteries, included at no cost in the purchase of a Landmark net-zero home in Blatchford and likely installed in the utility room, are long-lasting and should have a life span of at least 10, if not 20 years, said sonnen. They use advanced Lithium Iron Phosphate technology, and sonnen said this offers enhanced safety and longevity compared to lithium-ion batteries. Article content Article content While the 100 batteries in the Landmark Homes aren't enough to save the grid on its own — it will represent nearly half a megawatt of power and more than two megawatt hours of storage capacity to support the energy grid — Tallas said you have to start somewhere and this is a good start. Article content And a start it is. While this Edmonton project will likely take to mid-2027 to complete and fully ramp up this first VPP and its 100 batteries, sonnen plans to launch further VPPs throughout Alberta — sonnen said it believes Calgary would be a good future choice — and other Canadian regions, providing more than 18 MW of energy and 60 megawatt hours of grid support over the next three years.

‘Apocalypse in the Tropics' is the democracy documentary Trump doesn't want you to see

Brazil's former president, Jair Bolsonaro, is facing trial for his role in attempting to overturn the results of the 2022 election that removed him from power. On Monday, July 7, United States President Donald Trump, who disputed the results of the 2020 election that temporarily removed him from power, came to his defense. 'Brazil is doing a terrible thing on their treatment of former President Jair Bolsonaro,' Trump wrote on Truth Social. 'He is not guilty of anything, except having fought for THE PEOPLE. … LEAVE BOLSONARO ALONE!' So yeah, Petra Costa's documentary ' Apocalypse in the Tropics ' — which not only details Bolsonaro's rise and fall but how democracies can be subverted and dismantled — is pretty timely. It also provides a blueprint for reclaiming and strengthening democratic systems, which might be the main value for Americans viewers of the film, which opens Friday, July 11, at Landmark's Opera Plaza Cinema in San Francisco and streams on Netflix beginning Monday, July 14. Costa, who explored the threat to democracy in Brazil in her 2019 documentary 'The Edge of Democracy,' also on Netflix, doesn't shy away from drawing parallels between Bolsonaroism and Trumpism. Bolsonaro moved hard to the right and was embraced by Brazil's Evangelical Christian movement on his way to ascending to the presidency in 2018. When he got to power, he set about remaking the government by weakening its institutions, including Brazil's Supreme Court. Costa also accuses the president of bungling the response to the COVID-19 pandemic, leading to a contentious re-election campaign in 2022 in which he squared off against rival and former president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. But Costa also delves into the history of democratic and socialist movements in Latin and South America that hoped to narrow socio-economic gaps. Key players include former U.S. President Richard Nixon and his secretary of state, Henry Kissinger, as well as none other than Evangelical Christian leader Billy Graham, who spoke at a massive rally in Brazil in 1974 while the country was under a military dictatorship. 'What is certain is that Brazil became a laboratory for a brutal form of capitalism and vertiginous social inequality where millions of people began to seek the hope they needed in the Evangelical faith,' Costa narrates in the film. In the last four decades, Costa reports, the percentage of Brazilians who identify as Evangelical Christian has risen from 5% to 30%, significantly boosting Bolsonaro's political appeal. In his 2022 campaign against Bolsonaro, da Silva embraced Evangelical social issues, noting in one campaign speech that abortion and all-gender restrooms 'came straight out of Satan's mind.' At the heart of 'Apocalypse in the Tropics,' though, isn't so much current events but a longing to return to old ideals. A consistent thread is the conception of Brazil's capital of Brasilia as a utopian seat of government, architecturally embracing the three branches of government — executive, legislative and judicial — as separate but equal checks and balances. There's a lot of old footage from the 1950s of Brasilia being designed and built, which reveal this detail: Original plans had a church at the center of the design, as nearly all Brazilian cities and towns have. But it was removed to establish the idea of a separation of church and state.

Sky's the limit: The great Australian apartment dream

Great spots to sun yourself, a spa, sauna and upmarket dining areas you can book to host your guests. Sound idyllic? These are just some of the increasingly common perks of apartment living in the 21st century. More people from all walks of life and all ages are choosing to live in apartments, which have evolved to capture the great Australian dream. Apartments now make up around 30 per cent of all housing approvals in Australia – up from just 15–20 per cent a decade ago, according to Australian Bureau of Statistics data. Consequently, new building designs suit modern families and lifestyles, with a range of options for growing families, downsizers and everyone in between. Function, family and flair Today, floor plans are just as likely to include breakout spaces for home offices, dual-key apartments for students and much more focus on communal amenities. Rooftop gardens, barbecues and children's play areas add to the lifestyle. 'There's considerable focus on designing apartments with spaces to support larger gatherings within the building, such as bookable spaces and function areas,' says property developer Landmark's founder and CEO, Arash Tavakoli, whose team has delivered more than 40 residential projects across Sydney over the past 25 years. 'Our aim is to create places where people genuinely want to live – homes that are not only functional but also foster connection and community,' he adds.

Richton Park nursing home must pay $5.5 million in wrongful death lawsuit

More than four years after 85-year-old Sandy Brooks died under the care of Landmark of Richton Park Rehabilitation and Nursing Center, his family received news that a jury awarded them $5.5 million in a wrongful death lawsuit brought on his behalf. Brooks was an honest, hardworking husband, father and grandfather who wore his heart on his sleeve, said his daughter Andrea Brooks, 59. Though he had end-stage renal disease that required he receive dialysis three times per week, Andrea said Brooks was generally healthy and lived independently with his wife, Barbara, until he experienced a traumatic fall in October 2020 while watering plants outdoors at their South Side home. Brooks faced intensive treatment for a brain bleed at Advocate Christ Medical Center and made progress before being transferred to Landmark for physical therapy Nov. 25, Andrea Brooks said. 'We were expecting him to come home, because (doctors) were like, 'oh, he just needs therapy, and then from there he should be OK,'' Brooks said. Although COVID-19 era lockdowns remained in effect, Andrea Brooks said family members were able to regularly visit her dad at the hospital. That changed when he was admitted to Landmark, where he stayed for 13 days before he died after, according to the lawsuit, caregivers neglected to give him his required dialysis. 'We were not able to have any phone calls, there was no communication,' Brooks said. 'Nobody was updating us on anything.' Sandy's wife, Barbara, contacted the nursing home up to 10 times per day, rarely receiving responses, Andrea said. On Dec. 6, the family was allowed a brief FaceTime call with Sandy, who was unable to speak, she said, and he was found unresponsive in his room the next day. Sandy missed five dialysis appointments while under the care of Landmark, his family would later discover, prompting their lawsuit that concluded May 30. 'It appears that they were providing him some very basic care,' the family's attorney, Madison Cogan, said Friday. 'And by that, I mean they were going into his room, as far as we can tell. But as far as getting dialysis, that never happened, and I think that is what makes this so egregious. All it took is one nurse to recognize that Sandy needed his dialysis and that he wasn't receiving it.' A jury agreed, holding Landmark and its management company, Infinity Healthcare Management of Illinois LLC, accountable for $5.5 million in damages for neglecting Brooks, whose need for dialysis was chronicled by the hospital where he was previously treated. Landmark of Richton Park did not return messages requesting comment. Cogan said the family had sought between $6 million and $8 million. 'It's really hard to put a number on a life,' she said. Andrea said nothing has been the same since she lost her dad. 'This case, it made me relive everything,' she said. 'I could not believe the magnitude of how my dad suffered, and it just hurt me. It broke my heart that someone could just not care or not do their job.' ostevens@
