RM294mil MMEA vessel to arrive in Malaysia by early 2027

KUANTAN: The construction of the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency's (MMEA) Turkish-made Multi-Purpose Mission Ship (MPMS) is progressing ahead of schedule and is expected to be completed earlier than anticipated. MMEA director-general Admiral Datuk Mohd Rosli Abdullah said the MPMS, which will serve as a mother ship, is scheduled to arrive in Malaysia by early 2027. "Construction began in March this year and had reached 17 percent completion by June, which is about two percent ahead of schedule. The 24-month construction timeline is progressing well, and we anticipate completing the vessel ahead of the original deadline. "If it arrives before the Lima exhibition (Langkawi International Maritime and Aerospace Exhibition) in 2027, there are plans to showcase the ship at the event," he told reporters after launching MMEA's Sekolah Angkat Madani initiative at SMK Sungai Baging here today. Rosli said the 99-metre-long vessel, which can accommodate 70 crew members and 30 passengers, will be deployed to enhance maritime security and uphold Malaysia's sovereignty in the South China Sea. The ship, capable of operating at sea for up to 30 days without resupply, is currently being built by Istanbul-based Desan Shipyard. MPMS which includes four fast interceptor craft, two unmanned aerial vehicles, a helideck, medical facilities, and a detention centre is built with a cost of RM294 million.

Malaysia to receive ANKA MALE-UAS drones by March 2026

ISTANBUL: Malaysia is set to receive the Turkish-developed ANKA Medium Altitude Long Endurance-Unmanned Aerial System (MALE-UAS) by March 2026, according to Defence Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin. The drones, produced by Turkish Aerospace Industries (TAI), are undergoing radar system integration and radio communication installation, with components sourced from Germany. Mohamed Khaled confirmed that Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF) personnel are currently training with the supplier to operate the ANKA drones. 'When we acquire assets like this, operational training is also provided by the supplying company,' he told reporters during his visit to Turkiye. The Defence Ministry signed a contract with TAI in May 2023 during the Langkawi International Maritime and Aerospace Exhibition (LIMA) for three ANKA MALE-UAS units and related support equipment. Malaysia is expected to receive the ANKA-S variant, which can operate at altitudes of up to 30,000 feet for 24 to 30 hours and carry payloads between 250 to 350 kilogrammes. Beyond intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) roles, the ANKA drones can be armed with four MAM Smart Micro Missiles, developed by Turkish defence firm ROKETSAN, for precision ground-attack missions. Mohamed Khaled also inspected the construction of three Littoral Mission Ships (LMS) by Savunma Teknolojileri Muhendislik (STM) during his visit to the 2025 International Defence Industry Fair (IDEF). Future defence acquisitions will be determined under the 13th Malaysia Plan, set to be tabled on July 31. - Bernama

Iranian Ambassador to Malaysia Valiollah Mohammadi Nasrabadi said ties between Tehran and Kuala Lumpur have remained strong despite Iran having been under sanctions for 45 years. bootstrap slideshow 'Our relation and cooperation (with Malaysia) are good and of course, among the best that we have. But in terms of the economic cooperation, both countries are trying our best to expand the relationship,' he told Bernama in an interview here, Wednesday. Nasrabadi said the country hopes to expand its cooperation with Malaysia in high value sectors such as medical tourism, in which Iran can offer its advanced technology, and also in the defence and technology industries. He said Iran participated in the Defence Services Asia (DSA) and National Security Asia (NATSEC) exhibition held here last year, along with the Langkawi International Maritime and Aerospace Exhibition (LIMA) last May. He said both countries can deepen their trade ties in the agriculture sector. 'We have a lot of products that maybe Malaysia can import, such as fruit. At the same time, we import many products from Malaysia, including palm oil and cocoa. 'We are good friends so, we must work together and try to achieve good outcome,' he said.

Malaysia, Italy strengthen defence ties through high-level engagements

ITALY: Malaysia and Italy have reaffirmed their commitment to deepening bilateral ties with a renewed focus on defence cooperation, following a series of high-level meetings in Rome this week. Defence Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin, who joined Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim for a bilateral meeting with Italy Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni at Palazzo Chigi on Wednesday, said both countries expressed a shared intention to elevate their strategic partnership. 'The meeting underscored the commitment between Malaysia and Italy to strengthen the existing bilateral relationship. 'Several areas were discussed, including expanding cooperation in the defence sector,' Khaled said in a statement on X. He added that Malaysia viewed its defence ties with Italy as an opportunity to boost the domestic defence industry and national security capabilities. 'We hope this good relationship can bring our defence cooperation to a higher level, ultimately benefiting our local defence ecosystem,' he said. In a separate statement, the Defence Ministry (MINDEF) echoed the sentiment, stating that the long-standing relationship between the two countries could pave the way for further development in Malaysia's defence industry. 'The strong rapport between Malaysia and Italy is believed to have the potential to raise our defence sector to new heights. 'This would contribute to the broader advancement of our national defence capabilities.' The bilateral engagement was part of Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim's official visit to Italy, where he also led discussions with major Italian industry players, including leading defence contractors. In a Facebook post on Tuesday, Anwar said he held meetings with representatives of Fincantieri and Leonardo; two Italian defence giants that recently participated in the Langkawi International Maritime and Aerospace Exhibition (LIMA) 2025. 'These engagements are part of our long-term cooperation outlook, especially in strategic sectors like defence and energy,' Anwar said, adding that he emphasised the need for government-to-government (G2G) partnerships to position Malaysia as a regional maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) hub in Southeast Asia. Anwar also met with Italian energy firm ENI to explore collaboration with PETRONAS, underlining Malaysia's position as a reliable and forward-looking investment destination. He stressed that all commitments made during the trip must be followed by tangible actions to ensure planned investments are executed within the targeted timeframe. The Prime Minister's visit and accompanying defence-focused meetings mark a significant step in Malaysia's efforts to strengthen its strategic defence partnerships beyond ASEAN, with Italy seen as a key European counterpart.

PM opening doors to long-term deals with Italian financiers

ROME: Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim began his second working day in Italy with one-on-one business talks with top business and industrial leaders in strategic sectors like defence and energy. The meeting with Fincantieri and Leonardo, two giant Italian defence firms which took part in the recent Langkawi International Maritime and Aerospace Exhibition (LIMA), had opened doors to long-term ventures. 'I stressed the importance of government-to-government approach to strengthen Malaysia's role as a hub in maintenance, repair and operations,' said the Prime Minister yesterday. Anwar said the session was vital in maintaining Malaysia's position as a stable and reliable investment destination. He met with Fincantieri CEO Pierroberto Folgiero, Leonardo senior marketing and strategic campaign vice-president Tomasso Pani, and ENI CEO Claudio Descalzi, together with PETRONAS president and Group CEO Tan Sri Tengku Muhammad Taufik Tengku Kamadjaja Aziz. During an interactive session with Anwar moderated by Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz, several Italian company representatives opened up about why they were looking to invest in Malaysia, with one saying it was because the Asian nation was financially stable and its people 'easy to work with'. 'We have worked with biggies like Abu Dhabi and several cities in China, but Malaysia is almost perfect. It is a hub of the Asia Pacific region and as a country, developed to a very advanced level,' he said. Many attendees agreed, with most lauding the government's efforts in laying down a reliable environment for trade.
