What to expect from this weekend's Folly Festival

A packed programme of entertainment, food, culture and community celebration awaits at this year's Folly Festival. Ireland's first gender-balance festival returns to Cullohill Castle in Co Laois this weekend. On Friday, The Jerry Fish Electric Sideshow, Lisa McHugh, Clodagh Lawlor and Cliona McDonald will be among the acts taking the stage. Lisa McHugh will be performing at the Folly Festival on Friday. Saturday continues with Chasing Abbey, Ruaile Buaile, Barry Deegan, Aislinn Townsend and Cullohill Comhaltas. Festival-goers can look forward to the invigorating Cullohill Mountain Walk, introduced by RTÉ's Tracks and Trails presenter and festival MC, Doireann Ní Ghlacáin. Starting at the castle and taking in stunning panoramic views, walkers will return for a well-earned 'Taste of Laois' breakfast and cookery demonstration. Chasing Abbey will take to the stage on Saturday. Later in the day, nature lovers can join Wild Food Mary on a foraging walk along a scenic trail, learning about edible treasures found in the local countryside. Back at the castle grounds, the Artisan Food and Craft Stalls will showcase the best of Laois cuisine, with local favourites such as Merry Mill organic oats, Omimos sauces, Sips by Tom cocktail syrups, and Sunshine juices. A highlight of the weekend will be Ballymaloe chef Rory O'Connell's demo titled Coming Home, a nostalgic return to the village where he and his sister, Darina Allen, spent their formative years. His session will focus on seasonal, locally sourced ingredients from Laois Taste. A highlight of the weekend will be Ballymaloe chef Rory O'Connell's demo titled Coming Home. Continuing the culinary legacy, teenage chefs Scarlett and Tamsin Allen, granddaughters of Myrtle Allen, will demonstrate the art of jam and butter making. There is also plenty of family fun with a lineup of children's entertainment at Nancy's Yard on Saturday. Activities include face-painting, tractor rides, sandpit fun, magician shows, and live music by Cullohill Comhaltas. Additional community features include a dog show, vintage car exhibition, local art displays, and the beloved Great Folly Bake Off. Doireann Ní Ghlacáin will be MC for the weekend. Speaking about the Folly Festival, organiser John Scanlan said: 'This weekend promises to prove very special, not only are we celebrating the 600th anniversary of the iconic Cullohill Castle, we have an incredible line up to suit all musical tastes.' 'And we have announced today that Down The Line and Nív will join the great music lineup of The Jerry Fish Electric Sideshow, Lisa McHugh, Clodagh Lawlor and Cliona McDonald on Friday night and Chasing Abbey, Ruaile Buaile, Barry Deegan, Aislinn Townsend and Cullohill Comhaltas on Saturday.' 'In addition to the musical lineup there is numerous alternative activities for everyone of all ages from food stalls and demos, to children's activities and much more. There is an extensive car park at the Folly which we ask all festival goers to avail of, to avoid congestion in the village.'

Tipp cruise past Laois and book quarter-final date with Galway

Tipperary are through to the All-Ireland senior hurling championship quarter finals following a routine victory over Laois. In driving rain in a packed O'Moore Park, Tipperary scored goals at the start of both halves which helped them on the way to a big victory by a 3-32 to 0-18 margin at Laois Hire O'Moore Park. They were 1-05 to no score up after four minutes and the game was essentially over as a contest from that point onwards. Tipperary were 1/100 with the bookies beforehand and won by 23 points in the end to set up a quarter-final against Galway. Laois were beaten by Kildare in the Joe McDonagh Cup final six days ago by ten points so they will probably be happy enough with the showing that they put up here. They operated with a sweeper, one of Fiachra C-Fennell, Donnchadh Hartnett or Ryan Mullaney, throughout and that ultimately helped them to keep the score down. Jason Forde scored 2-03 for the victors while Willie Connors was excellent in midfield with five points - with Tomas Keyes as Laois' main performer. Forde, Connors and Darragh McCarthy pointed for Tipperary early on before Forde wheeled away from the Laois defence to plant a shot into the bottom corner. Connors added another brace to his tally before Paddy Purcell got Laois off the mark with two of his own. Tipperary came close to a second goal but they were denied by Cathal Dunne who carried over his form from the Joe McDonagh Cup final last week. McCarthy added a further two points from placed balls but Laois were starting to battle back well and win plenty of ball. The hosts were denied a goal of their own after two great saves by Rhys Shelly to foil Tomas Keyes and Purcell, but points from Jordan Walshe and Podge Delaney kept the scoreboard ticking over. Tomas Keyes continued to add points but by the time we got to half time, Tipperary led 1-18 to 0-12. Laois got the first score of the second half through Paddy Purcell but that would be as good as it got. From the next puckout, the ball broke to Sam O'Farrell who shot low into the corner and left Cathal Dunne in the Laois goal with no chance. Laois went short from the next restart and lost possession with the sliotar eventually coming to Forde who smashed a shot into the other corner of the net. The rate of scoring slowed massively over the next 15 minutes as Tipperary pointed five to Laois' three and held an 18-point lead midway through the half. Tipperary were denied goal by the frame of the posts twice in that period however as John McGrath and Peter McGarry both hit the woodwork. Late points from Peter McGarry, Jason Forde, Joe Fogarty and Oisin O'Donoghue completed the 23-point victory for the visitors. Laois: Cathal Dunne; Cody Comerford, Lee Cleere, Donnchadh Hartnett (0-01); Ryan Mullaney, Podge Delaney (0-01), Jordan Walshe (0-01); Fiachra C-Fennell, David Dooley; Aidan Corby, Tomas Keyes (0-09, 7f), Paddy Purcell (0-04); Mark Dowling, Ben Conroy, James Keyes (0-01). Subs: Tom Cuddy for Delaney (35, inj), John Lennon for Corby (49), Aaron Dunphy (0-01) for Dowling (51), Padraic Dunne for Mullaney (57), Martin Phelan for Walshe (64) Tipperary: Rhys Shelly; Robert Doyle (0-01), Bryan O'Mara, Michael Breen; Craig Morgan, Ronan Maher, Joe Caeser (0-01); Willie Connors (0-05), Séamus Kennedy; Alan Tynan (0-01), Andrew Ormond (0-03), Sam O'Farrell (1-01); Darragh McCarthy (0-09, 6f, 1 '65), John McGrath (0-03), Jason Forde (2-04, 2f). Subs: Johnny Ryan for Doyle (ht), Oisin O'Donoghue (0-01) for Ormond and Peter McGarry (0-01) for Maher (both 47), Brian McGrath for Morgan (55), Joe Fogarty (0-01) for McCarthy

Laois keeper pulls off one of the best saves you will see in McDonagh Cup final

Laois' Cathal Dunne pulled off one of the saves of the season in the Joe McDonagh Cup final against Kildare. With the sides level at 0-11 apiece, Kildare's Cathal McCabe raced through on goal and shot towards the bottom corner. Dunne got down smartly to his right to save the shot, only for the rebound to go straight to Kildare's Jack Sheridan. Sheridan scooped the sliotar up before hitting a powerful shot towards the gaping goal, but Dunne somehow managed to dive across to get a stick on the ball. The incredible double save was one of the best you will ever see, and even got a mention in GAA President Jarlath Burns' speech after the match. But unfortunately for Dunne, his county came out on the wrong side of the result. An inspired Kildare ended up ten-point winners and will play in the Leinster Championship next season. For Laois, it was a second successive loss in a Joe McDonagh Cup final after losing to Offaly twelve months ago.

Laois join skort protest after lining out in shorts for Leinster Intermediate semi-final

Laois' camogie players have become the latest team to join the skort protest by lining out in shorts before the throw-in of Monday's Leinster intermediate camogie semi-final. A picture of the Laois team, taken before throw-in at Freshford, shows the panel wearing navy shorts. The start of the Leinster semi-final was delayed when the referee instructed the Laois players to change into skorts or the game would be abandoned, the same ultimatum as was issued to Kilkenny and Dublin before Saturday's Leinster senior semi-final. The Laois players agreed to change so as to ensure the game proceeded, a game they won 2-12 to 0-17. With the second team of senior counties no longer permitted to compete in the All-Ireland intermediate and junior championships, Kilkenny's second team now comprises exclusively of U23 players and because they are not GPA members, they too did not don shorts before throw-in as part of the growing protest.
