Rubio: Vance would be ‘great' GOP nominee in 2028 ‘if he decides he wants to do that'

Secretary of State Marco Rubio said Vice President Vance would be a 'great nominee' for the Republican Party in 2028, should he decide to run for the White House. In an interview on Fox News's 'My View with Lara Trump,' Rubio sidestepped a question about his own presidential ambitions when asked by the president's daughter-in-law whether his own sights are 'set outside the State Department.' 'I think JD Vance would be a great nominee … if he decides he wants to do that,' Rubio said during the interview Saturday. 'I think he's doing a great job as vice president. He's a close friend, and I hope he intends to do it,' Rubio added. Pivoting back to his own political future, Rubio said he loves his job as secretary of State and intends to serve out his full term. He noted that would likely preclude him from running for president in 2028. 'I know it's kind of early, but being in the role that I'm in here, as the secretary of State, I really don't play in politics. There's actually rules against me being involved in domestic politics,' Rubio said. 'And I want to do this job, as long as the president allows me to do it, and stay in that job, which would keep me here all the way through January of 2028,' he added. Rubio, who ran unsuccessfully for president in 2016, did not shut the door to a future White House bid, but he said he would be satisfied if his career of public service peaks with his tenure at the State Department. 'I feel, honestly, you never know what the future holds. You never rule things out or anything, because you just don't know. Things change very quickly,' Rubio said. 'But that said, I believe that if I am able to be here through the duration of this presidency — and we get things done at the pace that we've been doing the last six months — I'll be able to look back at my time in public service and say, 'I made a difference, I had an impact, and I served my country in a very positive way.'' 'And I would be satisfied with that as the apex of my career,' Rubio said. 'And so that's what I'm focused on right now because what we're doing some special things that I think are going to bear dividend and fruit for a generation.' Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. Democratic North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper launches US Senate bid

WASHINGTON, July 28 (Reuters) - North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper launched his campaign for the U.S. Senate on Monday, offering his Democratic Party one of its best opportunities nationwide to win back a Republican-held seat in next year's midterm elections. Cooper, 68, moved after two-term Republican Senator Thom Tillis said he would retire following President Donald Trump's attacks on him in the leadup to the chamber's vote on the sweeping tax-cut and spending bill. That new law with its estimated $3-trillion price tag is a top target for Cooper's campaign, as his party aims to win back power in a chamber that Republicans control 53-47. "Politicians in D.C. are running up our debt, ripping away our healthcare, disrespecting our veterans, cutting help for the poor, and even putting Medicare and Social Security at risk just to give tax breaks to billionaires," Cooper said in his campaign video. "That's wrong, and I've had enough." Cooper's track record of winning in the competitive state that voted for Trump in presidential elections positions him as the frontrunner in the Democratic primary against former U.S. Representative Wiley Nickel. Last week, Lara Trump, the president's daughter-in-law, said she would not run for the open seat, setting up a potential general election matchup with Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Whatley. Democrats face a challenge to win back the Senate, as they would need to defend seats in Michigan, Minnesota, and New Hampshire where incumbents are retiring, and flip at least four Republican-held seats for a majority.

Rubio reflects on remarkable political journey from Trump critic to trusted cabinet member

Once a fierce opponent of President Donald Trump, Marco Rubio now serves as top U.S. diplomat in the president's cabinet — his transformation rooted in love of country and a willingness to get things done. Rubio sat down with Fox News' Lara Trump this weekend to reflect on his role as Secretary of State, calling to mind his love for MMA and boxing as he revealed what it was like to make that journey from rival to trusty right hand. "I always chuckle in politics, because… when two guys get in the ring, they could like each other, and, after every fight, they shake hands, they appreciate the combat," he said. "You respect someone who's willing to step into that octagon, right? Because very few people in the world are willing to actually step in there and do that. But no one's ever asked these fighters, 'Why did you punch that guy in the face in the second round?' No one would ask that…" he continued. "So in 2016, both President Trump and I… happened to be competing for the same thing. In any competition, especially as you get down, and it narrows down to three or four people, you know, punches are going to be thrown, but then that ends, and then we're on the same team, because he's a Republican nominee, and I'm a Republican." Rubio, a Florida senator leading up to his time in Trump's cabinet, described the president's first term as the "best four years [he] had in the Senate," and reflected on how much the two accomplished during that time. He also pointed to Trump's vice presidential pick JD Vance, whom he described as one of his "closest friends in politics." "We were on the same team from that point forward, and have been ever since," he said. Trump appointed Rubio to serve as the 72nd Secretary of State shortly after his 2024 victory over then-Vice President Kamala Harris. The former Florida senator was among the first confirmed to his cabinet after he assumed office for the second time on Jan. 20. Rubio described working for Trump as "a lot of fun… for two reasons," calling the president a "person of action" and rife with "incredible instincts for human behavior."

Marco Rubio deflects question about running for president...then reveals who would be a 'great nominee'

Secretary of State Marco Rubio refused to answer a question about his political aspirations for the White House - and instead revealed he thinks Vice President JD Vance would be a 'great nominee.' The senior White House official sat down with Fox News ' Lara Trump on Saturday, when she asked him whether he has considered running for president in 2028. Rubio replied that as the Secretary of State, he cannot get involved in domestic politics 'and I want to do this job as long as the president allows me to do it and stay in that job, which would keep me here all through January of 2028.' 'I believe that if I am able to be here through the duration of this presidency and we get things done at the pace that we've been doing the past six months, I'll be able to look back at my time in public service and say, "I made a difference, I had an impact and I served my country in a very positive way."' 'And I would be satisfied with that as the apex of my career... So that's what I'm focused on right now because we're doing some special things that I think are gonna bear fruit and dividend for a generation.' But, Rubio said he believes Vance 'would be a great nominee, if he decides he wants to do that.' 'I think he's doing a great job as vice president,' he continued. 'He's a close friend and I hope he intends to do it.' Rubio's remarks come just days after it was revealed that Vance is the apparent favorite to win the next presidential election. The 40-year-old already has a 27 percent chance to take the White House in 2028, according to Polymarket. In second place was California Governor Gavin Newsom with a 14 percent chance, which has fallen two percent according to the market. Democratic firebrand Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez closely trails the Golden State leader with a ten percent chance. Others close by the top three frontrunners included Pete Buttigieg with eight percent, and Rubio, with a six percent chance. Outsiders included incumbent president Donald Trump, with a three percent chance, even though he cannot run for a third term, and his son Donald Jr., with the same. Vance has worked diligently in recent weeks to offer a calculated response and limit his role in a MAGA civil war over the Trump administration's announcement that convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein did not have a 'client list' and there were no more files related to his death in prison or the sex trafficking investigation against him. 'Vice President Vance is following President Trump's lead and focusing on celebrating the administration's policy victories like the historic passage of the One Big Beautiful Bill,' a source close to the vice president told the Daily Mail. 'The White House is racking up wins on a daily basis, and there's a lot the Vice President can be talking about and working on that actually affects Americans' day-to-day lives,' the source noted. Meanwhile behind the scenes, Vance was working quietly to diffuse the tensions in the Trump administration. As FBI Deputy Director Dan Bongino and FBI Director Kash Patel were disappointed with Bondi's handling of the case, he spoke with them personally and urged them to remain in their positions rather than resign in protest, according to a White House insider. When the Wall Street Journal published details of a letter purportedly written by the president for Epstein's birthday that included a crude drawing of a naked woman, Vance played the loyal servant as he leaped to the defense of his boss. 'Forgive my language but this story is complete and utter bulls**t. The WSJ should be ashamed for publishing it,' Vance blasted on social media. He scolded the Journal for failing to show Trump a copy of the letter before publishing details about it in an article. 'Doesn't it violate some rule of journalistic ethics to publish a letter like this without showing it to the victim of this hit piece?' he asked. Vance also applauded the president's announcement that he had asked his attorney general to produce 'any and all pertinent Grand Jury testimony' regarding the case, reposting a 'LFG' post hailing the decision by Donald Trump Jr.
