Robert Downey Jr. is officially returning to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. But this time, he's not flying in as Iron Man. Instead, he's switching sides, trading his iconic red and gold armor for the dark, menacing mask of one of Marvel's most feared villains: Doctor Doom. Yes, that Doctor Doom. A Payday Fit for Doom: Downey's Historic Deal According to a bombshell report from Variety, Downey will earn 'significantly more' than $80 million to portray Victor Von Doom in the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday and its follow-up, part of the next era of Avengers films. That figure already catapults him into one of the highest-paid actors in movie history for a single role. But this deal isn't just lucrative. It's legendary. Downey's previous stint with Marvel saw him rake in an estimated $500 million to $600 million, thanks to starring roles in Iron Man (2008 to 2013), four Avengers movies, and lucrative cameos in Spider-Man: Homecoming, Captain America: Civil War, and The Incredible Hulk. Now, Marvel is sweetening the pot even more to bring him back as their flagship villain. The Russo Brothers Return By Downey's Demand This deal didn't fall from the sky overnight. By the end of next year, Robert Downey Jr. will have done both when he finally arrives in theaters as the leader of Latveria and metal-plated bad guy, Victor von Doom. Bringing back the star power and charisma he let rip as Iron Man and using it for evil in the franchise he helped build, the excitement levels are high as to what kind of Doctor Doom he'll be delivering in the upcoming movie. Whatever it ends up being, though, the new Captain America he'll be facing off against welcomes his return. In an interview with Entertainment Tonight, current Captain America Anthony Mackie shared his thoughts on Downey returning to the MCU and expressed his gratitude for seeing it happen. 'You know, the fun part is Robert Downey Jr. was such an integral part of the beginning of my career at Marvel," he confessed. "It's great to have him back and continue the legacy he built with the MCU.' By the sounds of things, it almost feels like he never left after his original Iron Avenger, Tony Stark, made the killer snap that brought back half the MCU in Avengers: Endgame. Not only working with stars he left behind in the 2019 film, Downey is also welcoming in the newcomers to the MCU that are set to join in on this super-sized endeavor. Speaking to The Happy Sad Confused Podcast, The Fantastic Four: First Steps star discussed what it was like to see the original star of the MCU in action and behind the scenes. 'He's the most incredible human being—soulful, deep, kind. He's been an amazing leader to us, considering we're the newbies, you know," she explained. "And a lot of the others have known this world for a really long time. He's just doing the most amazing work.' The Russo Brothers are returning to direct the final two films in the Multiverse Saga, and just like they did with Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame , the final two movies in the Infinity Saga, they are making these flicks super high-stakes and major events in the MCU. As we head into the year long wait to see Avengers: Doomsday , bits of info, both verified and rumored, will really start to ramp up. In the upcoming film, we know that Earth's Mightiest Heroes will assemble to battle RDJ's Doctor Doom, and aside from the X-Men, Fantastic Four, and New Avengers, we know Captain America will lead his own team of Avengers. A new rumor from The Cosmic Circus (via CBM) claims that the team led by Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie) will be comprised of Joaquin Torres/The Falcon, Carol Danvers/Captain Marvel, Bruce Banner/The Hulk, Wong, and Shang-Chi. They're officially on his team, with She-Hulk likely to join them. The site notes that Latveria, the fictional country from the Marvel Comics universe ruled by the supervillain Doctor Doom will also be featured in Avengers: Doomsday . The small, isolated European nation is located in the Banat region, and is often portrayed as having a distinct culture and history. The country is known for its advanced technology and the strong grip Doctor Doom maintains on its people. Regarding Doom's team, it's said, "we've already met them." That either means they're Multiversal Variants of familiar characters or villains from previous MCU movies. So far, Avengers: Doomsday stars Chris Hemsworth, Anthony Mackie, Winston Duke, Tom Hiddleston, Sebastian Stan, Letitia Wright, Paul Rudd, Robert Downey Jr., Wyatt Russell, Simu Liu, Tenoch Huerta Mejia, Florence Pugh, Danny Ramirez, David Harbour, Hannah John-Kamen, and Lewis Pullman, as well as The Fantastic Four: First Steps leads Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, and Joseph Quinn, with X-Men franchise stars Kelsey Grammer, Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, Alan Cumming, Rebecca Romijn, James Marsden, and Channing Tatum set to join them.
