Hawthorn star rushed to hospital for emergency surgery following clash with Port Adelaide

Hawks midfielder Finn Maginness was flown to hospital with a lacerated kidney following his side's victory over Port Adelaide on Saturday. The 24-year-old was experiencing unexplained pain in his abdomen following the match at University of Tasmania Stadium. He was transported to Launceston General Hospital, where it was soon determined he would need surgery at Royal Hobart Hospital to repair the laceration. Maginness will remain there for multiple days until he recovers, reports footy reporter Mitch Cleary. Hawks doctor Liam West delivered an update on Sunday. 'Finn's health is clearly our number one priority, and right now, the most important thing is that Finn is ok, is in the right place and he will recover fully,' West said. 'Finn will continue to spend this initial period of medical observation during his recovery in Hobart before any timeline for his return to play can be determined. 'We want to take this opportunity to thank the medical staff at LGH & the Royal Hobart for the fantastic care they have provided Finn.' The Hawks booted five goals to one in the last term in a 13.9 (87) to 7.7 (49) victory in atrocious conditions in Launceston. Hawthorn antagonist Jack Ginnivan iced the win in near-freezing conditions with the last goal of the game - and then made an aeroplane motion with his arms. The celebration followed Power coach Ken Hinkley being fined $20,000 for a similar reaction, plus verbal taunting, of Ginnivan and Hawk players after they lost last year's semi-final. 'Payback is deserved,' Hinkley later said. 'I have no problems with it and I am OK with it, I think it's good for the game, the theatre of the game. 'And good on Jack ... and Hawthorn themselves as a club. I won't be one that sits here and does anything but acknowledge that it was my turn today.' Hawk coach Sam Mitchell could also see the lighter side of the exchange. 'That is what you're going to get from Jack,'' he said. 'The banter between the clubs made a little bit more interest in the game. 'We finish the year one (win) each ... but it's good to get one back against Port because they have obviously caused us some pain and trauma, and all the Hawks fans some pain and trauma, over the last 12 months.'

Jack Ginnivan mocks Ken Hinkley with priceless celebration as Hawthorn get payback against Port Adelaide

Hawthorn have exacted some belated payback on Port Adelaide with a slogging 38-point win to revive their top-four hopes. The Hawks booted five goals to one in the last term in a 13.9 (87) to 7.7 (49) victory in atrocious conditions at Launceston's UTAS Stadium. 'Will he give them the aeroplane here back to Kenny if he kicks it, Jack?' commentator Dwayne Russell asked moments beforehand. 'Yes he does! Yes he does!' Cameras panned to Hinkley, who smiled in reaction to the cheeky taunt. 'We finish the year one (win) each ... but it's good to get one back against Port because they have obviously caused us some pain and trauma, and all the Hawks fans some pain and trauma, over the last 12 months.' Hawk veterans Jack Gunston and Jarman Impey kicked three goals each in a win that lifts their club to fourth ahead of other results. And their teammate Dylan Moore was best-afield with 32 disposals, two goals and nine tackles. The 11th-placed Power slipped from finals contention in Hinkley's 13th and final season as coach before handing over to assistant Josh Carr. Mitchell said the Hawks set up the win with their strong first quarter into a gale - after a feisty start, scores were locked at 3.2 apiece at the first break. Hawthorn booted three goals to one in a rain-soaked second stanza, with Gunston scoring two, including a stunning 30m set shot from a boundary line. That strike gave the Hawks a handy 13-point halftime buffer. And despite kicking into the wind in the third, Hawthorn again held sway to lead by 13 points at three-quarter time. The Hawks then swept with the wind to a victory as on-ballers James Worpel (26 disposals) and Josh Ward (26), Impey (26) and utility Blake Hardwick (27) revelled on the heavy track. Port's Jack Lukosius and Mitch Georgiades scored two goals each, while winger Jase Burgoyne (26 touches) and half-back Kane Farrell (25) were busy.

AFL news Hawthorn Hawks Jack Ginnivan has the last laugh in his Ken Hinkley battle after Port Adelaide win

Don't miss out on the headlines from AFL. Followed categories will be added to My News. Jack Ginnivan did his best to fire the final shot in his ongoing battle with Ken Hinkley late in Hawthorn's 38-point win over Port Adelaide at UTAS Stadium in Launceston on Saturday. The Hawks and Power have had a simmering rivalry ever since Ginnivan fanned the flames during last year's finals series. Last September, the polarising small forward made an Instagram comment that implied his Hawks would make short work of Port Adelaide in a semi-final and fly to Sydney to take on the Swans the following week. After Hinkley's side pulled off a three-point victory, the coach had plenty of words for Ginnivan, made an 'aeroplane' gesture (see below) and earned himself a $20,000 fine and stern talking to from the AFL. (Photo by Michael Willson/AFL Photos via Getty Images) Fast forward to Saturday afternoon and after Ginnivan kicked what proved the final goal in Hawthorn's 13.9 (87) to 7.7 (49) victory in horror conditions, he couldn't resist sheepishly putting the arms out and mimicking Hinkley's famous move. 'Will he give them the aeroplane here back to Kenny if he kicks it, Jack?' Dwayne Russell asked on Fox Footy as he prepared to send his shot towards goal. 'Yes he does! Yes he does!' Hinkley was then shown in his coach's box and he had a grin and a laugh as he saw the funny side of Ginnivan's act. 'Well done Kenny,' Dermott Brereton said. 'He's a good man Kenny. He's taken that in great spirits. 'Sometimes you just have to lick your wounds, don't you?' Jack Ginnivan pulls off the infamous move. Photo: Fox Sports Brad Johnson added: 'That's a brilliant celebration. Not over the top, just flying low today.' Brereton responded: 'It was a sheepish one too. I'm applauding Ken for having a giggle at that. Kenny's just stood up and said touche. Well done.' Some fans booed Hinkley when he was shown on the big screen, with the long-serving Port coach ending his tenure at the club at the end of this season. But Russell gave him credit for the way he handled it. 'Brilliant sportsmanship there from Kenny,' he said. 'The fans, a bit of pantomime booing when Ken was shown on the big screen too. 'But he's been a fantastic coach at Port Adelaide, he just won't be a premiership coach at Port Adelaide.' Hinkley was then naturally asked about the moment in his post-match press conference. 'Payback's, I was going to say something else there, payback's deserved,' he said with another smile. 'Look I have no problems with it, I'm OK with it, I think it's good for the game, the theatre of the game. 'And good on Jack, brave enough to go out there and play the way he played and do what he needed to do. 'And Hawthorn themselves as a club … I acknowledge it was my turn today.' A section of Hawks fans also gave Hinkley the same gesture from the stands as he made his way down to the rooms. Hawthorn's victory puts them in fourth place midway through round 19 and well placed to play finals again this season. But fans and broadcasters were talking about Ginnivan's cheeky moment. Fox Footy's X account tweeted: 'The Hawks will be flying home with a win … Jack Ginnivan with a late game message to Ken Hinkley.' Up the Mighty Hok wrote: 'I will admit, he is taking it well! Good on him!' The Hawk Talk Podcast said: 'Fair's fair. And good on Ken for taking Ginni's cheekiness well. The very last laugh went to Jack and he knew it. There was nothing else to do but recognise.' Wesley Edwards said: 'The perfect reaction from both of them! This is what competitive respect should look like.' The Welsh Bull added: 'Ha great sport by both of them, love to see it.' Originally published as Jack Ginnivan has the last laugh in his Ken Hinkley battle

Hawks veteran Jack Gunston denied ‘best goal of his career' in Hawthorn win over Port Adelaide in Launceston

Don't miss out on the headlines from AFL. Followed categories will be added to My News. A set of Port Adelaide finger tips denied Jack Gunston one of the greatest goals of his 276-game career on Saturday afternoon. A cheeky final quarter Jack Ginnivan goal celebration capped off Hawthorn's 38-point win in Launceston, 13.9 (87) to 7.7 (49). Hawthorn midfielder Josh Ward kept the ball in close to the boundary line and threw it on the boot into the forward 50m, where it bounced over the back of a pack. Despite his 33-year-old legs, Gunston read the play perfectly, sprinting to grab the Sherrin and then throwing it onto his left boot in one motion from an impossible angle. Watch Jack Gunston's incredible effort in the player above Jack Gunston takes the shot from a ridiculous angle. Photo: Fox Sports As he slid towards the boundary line and kept his eye on the bouncing footy, it seemed at first glance that he had kicked a ridiculous goal as the commentators lost their collective minds. 'Over the back, a little slip from Gunston, still a chance,' Dwayne Russell said on Fox Footy. 'He's kicked miracle goals before and that might be the best of them! That's one for all time!' Two of his colleagues screamed 'no way!' before Dermott Brereton declared: 'If that's in, that could be the goal of his career. 'You can't kick them. You can't kick them Dwayne.' The dreaded goal review robbed Gunston. Photo: Fox Sports Gunston ended up on the fence as Jackson Mead stopped the incredible shot. Photo: Fox Sports Brad Johnson noted: 'Look where Gunston is, he's in the gutter! That's how good it was.' Ben Dixon then declared: 'I reckon it's in, to the naked eye. Oh no, if that's touched.' That led a chorus of 'oh no' as it started to dawn on everyone Port Adelaide's Jackson Mead had played the ultimate spoil sport. With Hawthorn players celebrating as the ball bounced towards the line, Mead stuck out his right hand and got a touch on the footy centimetres before it crossed the paint. Those watching on were left as stunned as the Fox Footy team. Hawks Insiders tweeted: 'Best behind Jack Gunston has ever kicked.' Mark Robinson wrote: 'Geez stiff Jack Gunston, goal of the year contender that would've been.' Starcraft_princess said: 'Gunners robbed of a classic.' Andrew Johnston wrote in all caps: 'Uncle Jack are you freaking kidding me???' Once the review was in, Johnston replied to himself: 'Booooooo.' Hakan Benli said: 'Wow that would've been goal of the year!' Paul White joked: 'What a non-goal!' Another fan wrote simply: 'That Gunston behind was sick.'
