In South Carolina, Newsom Tests the Presidential Waters (Without Saying So)
On a sweltering summer afternoon inside the oldest Black church in rural Laurens County, S.C., the pews were packed to welcome Gov. Gavin Newsom. It is unusual for a California governor to spend time in the conservative South, especially one who rose to power by championing same-sex marriage, marijuana legalization and electric cars. But here he stood, thousands of miles from home, bowing his head for an opening prayer as light filtered through stained-glass windows in the sanctuary. 'Rejoice in hope,' Mr. Newsom, a Democrat, said later as he began to address about 300 people in the brick church. Officially, Mr. Newsom toured small towns in South Carolina this week on a mission to embolden Democrats in the heavily Republican state. But it was obvious that Mr. Newsom was also laying groundwork that could prove beneficial if he runs for president in 2028. Many Democrats nationwide are still trying to figure out Mr. Newsom. Some viewed him skeptically a few months ago when he challenged Democratic orthodoxy in podcast conversations with conservatives. There have also been questions about how well Mr. Newsom's coastal California image would play in other states. He owns boutique wineries in the Napa Valley, and he became known for dining at the French Laundry, an exclusive restaurant, when he attended a party there during the Covid-19 pandemic. Satirists and late-night comedians have made his slicked-back hair a defining characteristic. Want all of The Times? Subscribe.

Young couple's summer lake day turns to tragedy in boating collision
South Carolina authorities have identified the two 23-year-old victims of a fatal boating crash that occurred on Lake Greenwood in Laurens County on July 6. The Laurens County Coroner's Office identified the two deceased victims as Thomas Chandler Davis and Abby Katherine Davis, a young couple who attended Clemson University together, as FOX Carolina first reported. "On June 6, officers and investigators responded to a boating collision on Lake Greenwood involving two vessels. According to initial reports, an Alumacraft boat carrying five individuals was struck from behind by a Yamaha boat with two individuals onboard," the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources said in a July 6 statement. The SCDNR added that two of the individuals aboard the Alumacraft boat died in the crash and two others were transported to a nearby hospital to be treated for their injuries. Officials arrested and charged the operator of the Yamaha boat with two felony counts of boating under the influence (BUI). "We extend our deepest condolences to the families and loved ones of the victims," SCDNR said. "This remains under investigation. Additional information will be shared as it becomes available." Abby Davis graduated from Clemson in 2024, according to her obituary. Her obituary also says "her love for music and concerts was infectious." "Abby's adventurous spirit led her to travel, always eager to explore new places and cultures, often accompanied by her cherished friends. Known for her easy-going nature and warm personality, Abby never met a stranger. Her love for animals, especially her beloved dog, 'Motley,' was evident to all who knew her, and she found great joy in their companionship," her obituary states. Thomas Davis was also a recent Clemson graduate, where he studied civil engineering. "Chandler was a fitness enthusiast who loved going to the gym. He enjoyed the outdoors, hunting and boating on the lake. Chandler also loved the thrill of riding SxS and cherished every moment spent with his family and friends, creating memories that will be treasured forever," his obituary reads. Both Abby and Thomas Davis were born in Greenwood, South Carolina, according to their obituaries.

[DOWNLOAD: Free WSB-TV News app for alerts as news breaks] Saturday afternoon, Laurens County deputies and emergency crews were called to a boating accident near the Shady Field boat landing on Oconee River. Laurens County Fire Chief Joshua McCard told WMAZ they received a call around Saturday about a boat crashing into a tree. McCard told WMAZ that two people were on the boat and one, a 52-year-old man, fell overboard. He said he didn't believe he was wearing a life jacket. The other person called 911. The boater's identity has not been released. McCard told WMAZ, while dive teams are searching, they've had some difficulties due to the river's strong currents and it being about 12 feet deep. 'There's places that it's going to be deeper than that where it's washed out, but with it being up around 12 feet, that just leads to, more challenges,' McCard told WMAZ.
