Woman admits being part of trio that cheated retiree of over S$44,000 to lift 'curse'

SINGAPORE: Three foreign women allegedly cheated a 77-year-old woman into handing over more than S$44,000 (US$34,200) in order to lift a "curse". One of them, 56-year-old Li Yulian, pleaded guilty to her involvement on Friday (Jul 18). The Chinese national, whose two accomplices remain at large, attended court from her place of remand. The court heard that the victim, a Singaporean whose name was redacted from court documents, was walking along Jellicoe Road in the Lavender area at about 8am on Nov 16, 2019. She was approached by Li's alleged accomplice, Liang Guilian, who asked about a 90-year-old doctor who worked in the area. The victim said she did not know. Li then came forward and said she knew about the doctor. She also said she knew that the victim had three sons and a daughter. The victim was surprised that Li knew this. Li then gained her trust and convinced her that she was cursed. Li told the victim that the doctor would help her remove the curse if she brought as much money as possible with her. Li also told the victim that the doctor only saw patients in pairs and offered to accompany her. Believing Li, the victim returned home to retrieve S$8,000 in cash, gold jewellery and a bank passbook. She then went to a bank branch at Boon Keng MRT, where she withdrew another S$36,000. The pair then took a taxi back to Jellicoe Road, where they met Liang and the third alleged swindler, Zhu Mianfang. Zhu claimed to be the granddaughter of the doctor. She told the victim that the doctor had already removed her curse and instructed the victim to place the valuables into a brown recycling bag. She took the bag with valuables and handed the victim another bag. She told the victim to open it only at midnight and not to tell anyone about the doctor helping her with her curse. The victim handed over the following valuables to Zhu - S$44,000 in cash, three gold bracelets, two gold rings, two pairs of gold earrings, a Rolex watch and a beaded bracelet worth S$350. Li was paid S$1,000 for her involvement. The victim went home and told her children about the doctor lifting her "curse". Her daughter opened the bag and found only plastic bags and drinks inside. The police found that the three cheats had left Singapore for Malaysia via Tuas Checkpoint, and a police gazette was issued against them. Li returned to Singapore via Changi Airport in May 2025 and was arrested. She has been in custody since, while Liang and Zhu remain at large. None of the victim's valuables have been recovered. Li indicated that she wanted to make compensation. The prosecution is seeking 18 to 22 months' jail, pointing to the substantial amount cheated, the vulnerable victim and evasion of detection for more than five years. Li will return to court for mitigation and sentencing in September.

72-year-old man jailed for slashing neighbour who later died of heart disease

SINGAPORE: A 72-year-old man was jailed for a year on Thursday (Jul 17) for slashing his neighbour, who died of heart disease about two hours later. Lim Tee Tee pleaded guilty to one charge of voluntarily causing hurt to Mr Chua Kin Tong, then 69, at their block in Lavender on Dec 22, 2024. Mr Chua suffered injuries to his head, face, neck, arms and legs after Lim slashed him with a knife that had a 37cm-long blade. An autopsy found that these injuries were not fatal, and that Mr Chua's cause of death was ischaemic heart disease, Deputy Public Prosecutor Joseph Gwee said. Another charge of committing a rash act that caused hurt to a second victim, a 66-year-old neighbour, was considered in Lim's sentencing. At about 11.20am on the day of the incident, Lim was on the way home after buying food. As Lim exited the lift on the eighth floor of Block 805, King George's Ave, he collided with Mr Chua, who was trying to enter at the same time. Both men were unhappy about this but continued on their way, and Lim returned to his flat. Mr Chua then called the second victim to accompany him and they went to Lim's flat together. Mr Chua confronted Lim about the earlier collision, and the argument escalated when he hit Lim with a wooden stick. Lim ran into his kitchen and took the knife, and the two men got into a scuffle in the corridor. Lim slashed Mr Chua several times with the knife. The other neighbour grabbed onto Lim and asked them to stop, but sustained injuries on his arm as well. Mr Chua eventually left and went towards the lift lobby, while Lim and the other neighbour stayed on the eighth floor. At about 11.30am, police officers on patrol on the ground floor came across Mr Chua exiting the lift with severe head injuries. Mr Chua told the officers Lim had attacked him with a knife, and then collapsed. He was taken to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 1.20pm. Meanwhile, on the eighth floor, the officers found a trail of blood droplets leading to the flat where Lim and the other neighbour were. Both men were detained at the flat and given medical attention. They were later taken to a hospital, and Lim was arrested on the same day. Lim also suffered cuts and abrasions as well as a hand fracture. A psychiatric assessment found that he suffered from persistent depressive disorder, with a mild contributory link to his offences. "However, he remained cognitively aware that it was wrong for him to bring the knife out, and had chosen the knife deliberately as a suitable weapon for self-defence," said Mr Gwee. Lim was also not of unsound mind at the time and was fit to plead in court. Calling for 14 to 17 months' jail for Lim, the prosecutor said that if Mr Chua had not died, he would likely have needed surgery for his injuries, which cut into his cartilage. Mr Gwee also said that while Lim did not initiate the fight, he reacted disproportionately.

ITC Mangaldeep Strengthens ‘Sixth Sense Panel' – a Sensory-First Innovation to empower the Visually Impaired

ITC Mangaldeep, India's leading incense brand, has strengthened its Sixth Sense Panel initiative, a unique programme to involve the visually impaired community in the fragrance development process. The Mangaldeep Sixth Sense Panel has been extended to 180 members, now comprising participants from diverse and distinguished academic as well as professional backgrounds. With a clinically established heightened sense of smell proving to be the key differentiator for the visually impaired, this initiative has opened doors for the blind to seek employment in the fragrance testing sector. ITC Mangaldeep recently felicitated 30 visually impaired individuals in Hyderabad who successfully completed a specialized fragrance training program under its Sixth Sense Panel Initiative. Introduced in 2021, the Sixth Sense Panel, has been gradually expanded, with over 180 panelists trained across Chennai, Kolkata, Mumbai, Delhi and Hyderabad. Over the years, this panel played an instrumental role in product innovation, launching several unique and superior fragrance variants for Mangaldeep such as Sandal, Rose, Lavender, and Marigold. The extended Sixth Sense Panel represents a new chapter in this journey. Conducted through two training sessions in June, the program focused on sharpening scent evaluation skills and deepening olfactory articulation. Many of the participants are currently employed, engaged in higher education, or associated with social sector organizations – bringing with them a wide range of perspectives & experiences Speaking on the initiative, Mr. Gaurav Tayal, Divisional Chief Executive, Agarbatti & Matches Business, ITC Ltd, said, 'The Sixth Sense Panel began 4 years back and now it has transformed into an integral part of how we develop and refine our select fragrance offerings at Mangaldeep. Collaborating with individuals who have a naturally heightened olfactory sense gives us valuable perspectives that go beyond conventional testing methods. We at Mangaldeep are looking forward to creating a more meaningful and engaging collaboration with the visually impaired community in the days ahead.' Enlightened by research conducted by the Laboratory for Visual Neuroplasticity at the Schepens Eye Research Institute of Massachusetts Eye and Ear, indicating that the blind have superior olfactory abilities, Mangaldeep, in 2021, decided to induct a batch of blind fragrance testers, which was called 'Sixth Sense Panel' to join their product development team as part of the company's social commitment. They assisted in new product development after being trained in the nuances of fragrance testing. The integrated initiative is aimed at enhancing stakeholder interest and prompt the fragrance industry to recognize the opportunity of working with blind people. The training program, conducted by ITC Mangaldeep's in-house fragrance experts included: Olfactive training using core fragrance families such as Fruity, Floral, Woody, Herbal/Mint, and Oudh/Amber—through both raw materials and blended experiences. Hands-on familiarization with Mangaldeep's key products, including dhoop sticks, flora agarbattis, premium cups, and sambrani sticks, facilitated via touch and scent. Structured product evaluation protocols to enable panel members to participate in monthly fragrance trials and provide detailed feedback. "Being part of ITC's Sixth Sense panel has been a truly empowering experience. It's more than just fragrance evaluation; it is about pride, purpose, and inclusion. I'm honoured to contribute to a project that gives the visually impaired community a meaningful voice," said Mahender Vaishna, Former Blind Cricket World Cup Winner & Founder, Mahnav Ability Trust. On the successful completion of the training, Minal Singhvi, Co-founder, Radio Udaan said, 'I am truly grateful to ITC for this enriching training experience. It has reignited the joy and creativity I once felt before losing my vision. As someone passionate about design, this opportunity has helped me rediscover my confidence and fulfil a long-held dream of being part of a corporate environment where I feel valued and appreciated.' People with disabilities are often perceived through the lens of sympathy. This often comes at the cost of their dignity. Mangaldeep's initiatives was born out of the belief that in an inclusive world, individuals with disabilities should not have to depend on concessions but valued for their ability to go beyond what people can achieve. According to clinical research, blind people's visual disability grants them access to a 'super-ability' – the 'Sixth Sense'. They 'see' things using their heightened other senses such as smell, touch, and sound. Leveraging this strength, Mangaldeep's initiative focuses on enabling the Sixth Sense panellists a life of independence, fulfilment and dignity. Mangaldeep continues to lead the category by blending tradition with thoughtful innovation, creating devotional experiences that resonate deeply across generations, communities, and abilities.
