John Lawn, Watertown state lawmaker, pleads not guilty to drunken driving charge

Lawn, wearing a checkered navy blue suit, did not speak during his brief arraignment in Boston Municipal Court in downtown Boston. A judge said he cannot drive, and set Aug. 1 for his next court appearance. Lawn told responding officers that 'I am a state rep,' and that he was coming from an event at the State House when he was arrested, according to According to a heavily redacted report Boston Police released Wednesday, officers found Lawn sitting in his heavily damaged GMC Yukon near the corner of Beacon and Bowdoin streets after a bystander flagged down officers. Advertisement The bystander told police that he saw Lawn's SUV strike another vehicle on nearby Hancock Street, and drive away. He said he followed Lawn's vehicle, which ran a pair of stop signs before stopping at a red light near Beacon Street, according to the report. The bystander told police he got out of his car and tried to speak with Lawn, but that Lawn drove off when the light turned green. Lawn later stopped on Bowdoin Street, where police said his SUV had 'extreme damage to the passenger side front wheel.' Police said they also found pieces of his SUV's passenger side bumper on Hancock Street. Advertisement Police said Lawn's eyes were glassy and bloodshot, and his speech was slurred, according to the report. 'You know what I'd rather do, I want to take an Uber and go home,' he told police when asked to take a breathalyzer, according to WCVB. In a statement Wednesday, Lawn called the incident 'completely unacceptable,' said he 'deeply regret[s] and take[s] full responsibility' for his actions. 'I make no excuses,' he said. 'I am committed to taking the necessary steps to ensure that nothing like this ever happens again. To my family, friends, and constituents, I have let you down, and for that I am deeply sorry.' Lawn has represented parts of Newton, Waltham, and Watertown since 2011, and has served as chair of the Legislature's powerful health care financing committee since 2021. Mass. lawmaker facing charges of drunken driving, property damage after arrest near State House

A Massachusetts lawmaker is facing charges after police say he was arrested on Beacon Hill near the State House in Boston early Wednesday morning. State Rep. John J. Lawn was arrested around 1:45 a.m. on charges of operating under the influence of liquor and leaving the scene of property damage, a Boston Police Department spokesman told Boston 25 News. Lawn is a Democrat who represents the state's 10th Middlesex District, which includes the communities of Newton, Waltham, and Watertown. Lawn also chairs the Committee on Health Care Financing. The Massachusetts Republican Party issued a statement in response to Lawn's arrest, calling for his resignation. 'Wednesday's arrest is another example of Beacon Hill Democrats using their titles to try and avoid punishment. By declaring himself a lawmaker at the time of his arrest, it's clear Rep. Lawn sought to escape the consequences of his actions,' MassGOP spokesman Mark Steffen said. He should resign and offer the residents of Watertown the chance to elect a new representative who doesn't ask officers to look the other way when he allegedly breaks the law." Boston 25 News has reached out to Lawn's office for comment on the incident. Boston police didn't immediately share additional details on the arrest. An investigation remains ongoing. Local band Lawn talks Miami's music scene

Miami band Lawn is new to the local scene, so we asked them a couple of questions about their journey. Responses were edited for clarity When did you start your band? Romeo (singer songwriter), Cooper (bass) and Daniel (guitar) started the band last summer after working together in a different band. They decided to leave that project and start their own band so they could explore the indie genre more deeply. Once they found Cliff (drums), Lawn was created. How would you describe your sound? Lawn's sound, which takes inspiration from psychedelic rock and shoegaze, is raw yet danceable. Our new EP "House Party Hero" explores a range of styles, from grunge influences ("Overdoser") to the energizing guitar solo on "Prom Night." What's the best part of Miami's music scene? What are the challenges? The best part Romeo: The jazz scene. I've seen a lot of great performances at the Fish House and Lagniappe. Cliff and Cooper: The diversity of venues and the people that go to them. You've got clubs, bars, waterfront restaurants and rundown warehouses. Daniel: It's diverse and growing rapidly. Especially when it comes to Latin and EDM music, Miami is the place to be if you want to see firsthand how those genres are evolving. The challenges

Kelantan builds 7 sports venues for SUKMA 2028 preparation

KOTA BHARU: The Kelantan government is focusing on the construction of seven major sports facilities in preparation to host the Malaysia Games (SUKMA) in 2028. State Youth, Sports, NGOs and Community Unity chairman Zamakhshari Muhamad said that out of the seven projects, three venues are currently under construction while the remaining four are in tender phase. 'The three facilities currently being built are the Bukit Merbau Main Stadium and Shooting Range in Pasir Puteh district, as well as the Jeli Sports Complex in Jeli district. 'The four other major projects in the tender process are the Hockey Stadium, Indoor Arena and the Squash Centre & Covered Lawn Bowls Court, all in Pasir Puteh, as well as the Aquatic Centre in Kota Bharu,' he told Bernama recently. According to Zamakhshari, progress on the Bukit Merbau Stadium has reached 16.77 per cent since construction began in 2023 and is expected to be completed by 2027. Meanwhile, the construction of the Shooting Range, which began in December last year, which is only at four per cent progress is expected to be completed by the end of December 2026. The Jeli Sports Complex has reached 39.75 per cent progress and is expected to be completed by June 2025. 'SUKMA in Kelantan is expected to take place around June or July 2028. We are confident that all these facilities can be completed on schedule with continuous monitoring by the Public Works Department (JKR) and the commitment of the appointed contractors,' he said. Commenting on the state contingent's preparations, he stated that the Kelantan Sports Council (MSN) has already begun early planning ahead of SUKMA 2026 (in Selangor). 'Based on the experience from SUKMA Sarawak 2024, we have carried out restructuring and appointed new coaches to bring the performance of state athletes to new heights. 'I also frequently go down to the ground to ensure that all preparations are running smoothly according to MSN's planning before we even set our medal targets,' he said.
