Mutual fund SIP guide: How to invest for the rest of 2025
As the second half of the year kicks off, mutual fund investors using the SIP route may be thinking about their next move — whether to continue as is, increase their investments, or adjust their strategy — especially with markets showing strength but also some short-term volatility , to which experts recommends that investors should stick to their SIPs regardless of market levels. 'Rather than reacting to highs or corrections, the focus should be on time horizon and goals. SIPs work best when held over the long term, allowing rupee cost averaging to play out. Adding a step-up every year—say by 10–15%—can significantly boost corpus over time without relying on market timing,' Sagar Shinde, VP of Research at Fisdom, shared with ETMutualFunds. Another expert, while mentioning what SIP is, said that in past corrections—such as the 2020 market fall—investors who continued their SIPs ended up buying more units at lower NAVs, which lowered their average cost per unit and when markets recovered by 2021, this led to higher portfolio growth. Live Events 'In contrast, during high valuation periods (like Jan 2022 or May 2025), the same SIP amount buys fewer units, but historical data shows the value of previously accumulated units rises. Despite market volatility, SIP inflows in India touched Rs 26,688 crore in May 2025, reflecting continued participation across market phases,' Chakravarthy V, co-founder and Executive Director of Prime Wealth Finserv told ETMutualFunds. In the first half of the current calendar year, sectoral and thematic funds have ruled the return chart and offered upto 32% return in the same period. The first 46 funds were sectoral and thematic funds. Looking at the average return offered by the equity categories, banks & financial services funds have offered the highest average return of 12.29% followed by international funds which gave 9.03% average return. Large cap funds outperformed mid caps and small caps and gave an average return of 4.87% whereas mid cap funds gave an average return of 1.44% and small cap funds lost 2.13% in the first half of the current calendar year. Also Read | Arbitrage Funds vs. Liquid Funds: Which one is right for you? Out of 21 categories, 16 gave positive returns whereas five gave negative average returns. Technology funds lost the most of around 4.44% followed by pharma & health care funds which lost 3.54% in the same period. Post analysing the performance by equity mutual fund categories in the first half of CY2025, Shinde advises flexi cap, large cap, and focused equity funds as the strong SIP candidates today due to their ability to navigate market cycles. For more conservative investors, hybrid and multi-asset funds offer diversification across asset classes and help manage short-term volatility, he added. Chakravarthy V said that after looking at AMFI data as of May 2025, small-cap and mid-cap categories have shown the highest 10-year SIP CAGR—ranging between 22% to 26% and a Rs 10,000 SIP in certain small-cap funds has grown to Rs 49 lakh in 10 years but these categories also showed larger drawdowns during volatile periods. 'Sectoral and thematic categories, like infrastructure and manufacturing, have also seen strong short-term growth but are known to follow cyclical patterns. In contrast, multi-asset and hybrid categories have delivered 12–16% CAGR over the past 10 years, with historically lower volatility and drawdowns compared to pure equity categories,' Chakravarthy V further explained. According to the monthly SIP contribution data by AMFI (Jan- May), in the current calendar year so far, the total SIP contribution has been nearly Rs 1.31 lakh crore against Rs 98,571 crore in the same period a year ago. Till the last available data, the SIP contribution has surged from Rs 26,400 crore in January to Rs 26,688 crore in May. In the current financial year so far, the total SIP contribution by the investors have been approximately Rs 53,320 crore. Many experts recommend that step-up SIP allow investors to incrementally raise their contributions, adapting to increasing income and changing financial goals. With gold, silver, and equity market rallying and investors confused about which one to choose for investment, the market experts are recommending that given the current geopolitical backdrop, political uncertainty, and global inflationary pressures, investors should prioritize a multi asset strategy as diversification helps in mitigating risk during turbulent times. Also Read | Best mutual funds to invest through SIPs in July 2025 So, considering these factors, the important thing to know is whether step-up SIP is wise now and whether investors should consider hybrid or multi-asset funds. While addressing this, Chakravarthy V says that from a purely mathematical perspective, increasing SIP contributions each year tends to result in a higher final corpus, suppose a Rs 10,000 monthly SIP for 10 years at 12% CAGR results in a corpus of around Rs 23 lakh but if the SIP amount is increased by 10% annually, the final amount crosses Rs 35 lakh—a 50%+ increase driven entirely by rising contributions. 'Separately, funds that follow hybrid or dynamic asset allocation strategies have historically adjusted their equity exposure during high-valuation periods. For example, in early 2018 and late 2021, some of these funds reduced equity to as low as 30–40%, aiming to limit downside during subsequent corrections,' he added. Believing that step-up SIP is a smart move for the second half of 2025 especially if income has grown, Shinde advices that for new SIPs, hybrid or multi-asset funds are a good starting point, offering a balanced approach to growth and stability in uncertain markets. One should always invest based on their risk appetite, investment horizon, and goals. ( Disclaimer : Recommendations, suggestions, views and opinions given by the experts are their own. India vs England, 2nd Test Day 5, Edgbaston Weather Update: Will rain spoil India's chances of maiden Test win in Birmingham?
India's captain Shubman Gill celebrates after scoring a century during day four of the second cricket test match between England and India at Edgbaston in Birmingham, England, Saturday, July 5, 2025. (AP Photo/Scott Heppell) Birmingham's weather on Sunday could play spoilsport in India's chances to level the series 1-1 in the second Test against England at Edgbaston. India are in a dominant position, courtesy of India captain Shubman Gill, who became the first batsman in Test history to make scores of 250 and 150 in the same match before Mohammed Siraj and Akash Deep again struck with the new ball as the tourists pressed for a series-levelling win. Gill followed his first-innings 267 in the second Test with another superb knock of 161 off just 162 balls. Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW! He eventually declared India's second innings on 427-6 after tea on the fourth day. That left England needing a mammoth 608 runs to go 2-0 up in this five-match series. However, according to the forecasts, the morning will begin under overcast skies with light showers expected between 9 and 11 am. These early interruptions could delay the start of play and inject fresh life into the pitch, offering assistance to the seamers with lingering moisture. India Dominate Day 4! Siraj & Akash Deep Rattle England As per the UK Met Office, wet weather is likely to impact the first part of the day in Birmingham, with rain probabilities ranging between 50% and 30% from 10 am to 2 pm local time (7:30 pm IST). However, the forecast indicates that 'heavy rain will give way to overcast skies by lunchtime,' and the likelihood of further showers will drop to below 10% after 3 pm. Mohammed Siraj, who led India's attack with 6-70 in the first innings, struck an early blow Saturday when he removed Zak Crawley for a duck as a loose drive went straight to backward point. Deep, given the unenviable task of replacing Jasprit Bumrah, the world's number one-ranked fast bowler, then carried on from his four-wicket haul first time around by bowling left-hander Ben Duckett (25) with a nip-back ball. He then clean bowled Joe Root for just six as the world's number one-ranked Test batsman was undone by a superb full-length ball that moved away late. Zero tolerance for terror: PM
New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday outlined a three-point national policy on terrorism, asserting that India would respond to future terror attacks on its own terms, make no distinction between the terrorists and the government that sponsors them, and a zero tolerance to any form of nuclear blackmail. Speaking at the Adampur Air Force Station in Punjab, which was one of the targets of Pakistan during last week's hostilities, Modi said, "India's 'Laxman Rekha' against terrorism is crystal clear now. If another terror attack occurs now, India will give a reply. We saw this during the surgical strike, during the air strike. Now, Operation Sindoor is India's new normal". "India has decided on three points. First, if there is a terrorist attack on India, we will give a reply in our own way, on our condition, at our time. Second, India will not tolerate any nuclear blackmail. Third, we will not see terror-supporting governments and terror masterminds as separate entities," Modi said. Modi's surprise visit to the Adampur base was also high on symbolism. The Prime Minister gave his rousing speech in the backdrop of a fully intact S-400 air defence system and an MiF-29 aircraft stationed at the airbase. It was the same S-400 system that Pakistan claimed to have destroyed in airstrikes last week. The visit, aimed at boosting the morale of the forces, which played a key role amid Pakistan's wave of drone and missile strikes, comes days after both countries reached a ceasefire deal. It came against the backdrop of Operation Sindoor, where India destroyed nine terror infrastructures in Pakistan and Pakistan-Occupied-Kashmir (POK) in response to the Pahalgham attack, which left 26 dead. However, the PM made it clear that India has merely paused its operations and Islamabad's conduct will decide its future actions. "Operation Sindoor is India's new policy against terrorism and our unwavering pledge to justice. It is the new normal. We have only kept in abeyance our operations against Pakistan and the future will depend on their behaviour," PM Modi said, reiterating his warning to Pakistan that he said in his address to the nation on Monday. Modi toured the base and greeted uniformed airmen who shouted 'Bharat Mata ki jai' after he arrived there unannounced early Tuesday morning. After interacting with the soldiers, he delivered the speech with an S-400 system in the backdrop, wearing a Western Air Command cap with its trademark trishul embroidered on it. "When our armed forces take the wind out of nuclear blackmail, our enemies understand the importance of 'Bharat Mata Ki Jai'," he said. "Bharat Mata ki Jai is not just a slogan, but our soldiers' pledge to dedicate their lives for the nation. When our drones and missiles hit our enemies, they hear 'Bharat Mata Ki Jai'," he said. "The tales of your valour will be etched in history forever. I salute our Army, Air Force and Navy personnel," PM Modi said. The patrons of terrorism have realised that casting an evil eye on India will only mean their destruction, the prime minister said. Adampur is India's second-largest air base and houses Rafale and Mig-29 squadrons. It has played an important role in 1965 and 1971 wars with Pakistan as well.

"Hum ghar mein ghus kar maarenge aur bachne ka ek mauka tak nahi denge": PM Modi
Jalandhar (Punjab) [India], May 13 (ANI): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday reiterated India's firm stance on terrorism, emphasising that the country will not tolerate any form of terrorism and will take decisive action against terrorists. Speaking at the Adampur Air Base, PM Modi said, 'Hum ghar mein ghus kar maarenge aur bachne ka ek mauka tak nahi denge' (We will beat you inside your house, will not give you a chance to escape). PM Modi travelled to Adampur Air Base in Jalandhar today and interacted with Air Warriors, days after the cessation of hostilities between India and Pakistan. Praising the Indian Armed Forces on the astounding success of the Operation Sindoor, Prime Minister Modi asserted that Indian defence forces have defeated the Pakistani army on which these terrorists were relying for their safety. 'The Indian Army, Indian Air Force and Indian Navy have defeated the Pakistani Army, on which these terrorists were relying. There is no such place in Pakistan where terrorists can sit and breathe in peace,' the PM said. Stating that India's policy against terrorism is 'crystal clear', the Prime Minister stated that Operation Sindoor is India's new normal and India will give a solid reply. 'India's 'Laxman Rekha' against terrorism is crystal clear now. If another terror attack occurs now, India will give a reply - a solid reply. We saw this during surgical strike, during air strike. Now, Operation Sindoor is India's new normal,' he said. Prime Minister Modi reiterated the three key pillars of India's security doctrine - India will respond to a terrorist attack in its own way; it will not tolerate any nuclear blackmail; and it will not differentiate between terror-supporting governments and terror masterminds. The PM said, 'Like I said yesterday, India has decided on three points. First, if there is a terrorist attack on India, we will give a reply in our way, on our terms, on our time. Second, India will not tolerate any nuclear blackmail. Third, we will not see terror-supporting governments and terror masterminds as separate entities. The world, too, is going ahead with understanding India's new form and system.' On Monday, in a bold and unequivocal message to the nation following Operation Sindoor, Prime Minister Narendra Modi declared that India will no longer tolerate nuclear blackmail and will respond to any terrorist attack with strict and decisive action. 'Operation Sindoor is now India's established policy in the fight against terrorism, marking a decisive shift in India's strategic approach', he declared, stating that the operation has set a new standard, a new normal in counter-terrorism measures. In a first address to the nation since India's military retaliation 'Operation Sindoor,' PM Modi on Monday outlined three key pillars of India's security doctrine. Firstly, the 'Decisive Retaliation,' any terrorist attack on India will be met with a strong and resolute response. India will retaliate on its terms, targeting terror hubs at their roots. The second is 'No Tolerance for Nuclear Blackmail.' PM Modi said India will not be intimidated by nuclear threats. Any terrorist safe haven operating under this pretext will face precise and decisive strikes. The third pillar is 'No distinction between terror sponsors and terrorists.' PM Modi said India will no longer see terrorist leaders and the governments sheltering them as separate entities. (ANI)
