Details on Adou Thiero's rookie contract with the Lakers

During the second round of last month's NBA draft, the Los Angeles Lakers turned the No. 55 pick into the draft rights to University of Arkansas forward Adou Thiero by making two trades. Thiero's offensive game is a work in progress, but he has the athleticism and defensive ability to help them very soon. At 6-foot-8, he's the type of athletic wing the Lakers haven't had in quite some time. He officially signed his Lakers contract on Sunday, and fans are looking forward to seeing him play in a Purple and Gold jersey. Advertisement According to Michael Scotto of HoopsHype, Thiero's contract is for three years and $5.95 million. The third year of the deal is a player option. Thiero, who was the No. 36 pick in the draft, averaged 15.1 points and 5.8 rebounds a game while shooting 54.5% from the field and 25.6% from 3-point range this past season. He will not participate in summer league play because of a knee injury he suffered a few months ago. Deandre Ayton has reportedly agreed to sign with the Lakers

After a long search for help at the center position that has lasted a few years, the Los Angeles Lakers have apparently obtained a legitimate starter at that position. On Sunday, Deandre Ayton agreed to a buyout of his contract with the Portland Trail Blazers. He was set to make $35.55 million for the 2025-26 season, but instead, he was set to become a free agent once he cleared waivers. Advertisement Immediately, speculation began that he was headed to the Lakers. Once he cleared waivers on Wednesday afternoon, he reportedly agreed to come to the Purple and Gold, per Shams Charania of ESPN. Ayton averaged 14.4 points and 10.2 rebounds a game this past season, and he has career averages of 16.4 points and 10.5 rebounds a game over seven seasons. Many have had concerns about his effort and intensity level on the defensive end, especially since he isn't a shot-blocker, but at the very least, he should give the Lakers a rim-running lob threat and a strong rebounder. Luka Doncic on the criticism that he is slow

Although Luka Doncic has been a phenomenal NBA player over the last several years, he has recently gotten a good deal of criticism. Much of it has centered around his subpar fitness and conditioning, as well as the fact that he is pudgy and has trouble staying in front of his man defensively. One reason for his defensive shortcomings is his lack of speed and quickness, which could be partly attributed to his lack of fitness. But overall, Doncic has never been a speed demon. Advertisement He was a guest on the latest episode of the "Mind the Game" podcast, which is co-hosted by LeBron James and Steve Nash. Nash brought up the Oklahoma City Thunder, who are heading to the NBA Finals thanks to a young, deep and athletic cast, and he asked Doncic about his speed, or lack thereof. The superstar gave an interesting response. "I have speed, I just don't show it," Doncic answered. There have been videos of Doncic from the 2018-19 season, when he was a rookie, posted on social media lately, and he displayed more speed and quickness back then. Since he has apparently already slimmed down this offseason, the hope appears to be that improving his fitness and conditioning heading into next season will make him quicker on both ends of the floor. Magic Johnson on what the Lakers need to do this offseason

Los Angeles Lakers great Magic Johnson is never shy about voicing his opinions, especially when it comes to the Purple and Gold. Even after all these years and numerous business ventures, which include being a part-owner of the Los Angeles Dodgers and Washington Commanders, his heart remains with the Purple and Gold. The Lakers have a chance to become legitimate championship contenders this summer if they make the right moves. They have a championship-caliber core that consists of roughly five players, and they just need a couple more, including a starting-level center and possibly a two-way wing or backcourt player. Advertisement During an appearance on ESPN's "Get Up," Johnson made it clear what the franchise must do this offseason to get to where it wants to be. 'We need a big man and so hopefully we'll be able to get a big man during this offseason,' he said. 'I think we must improve the bench as well, and so Rob [Pelinka] will have a chance to do that as well. We gotta get faster. Right now, the Lakers are too slow and Minnesota really exposed the Lakers. When they had individual matchups, they went at Luka [Doncic] and they went at Austin Reaves, so they must improve the defense. If they don't improve the defense, it's no way the Lakers can win a championship.' Defense and athleticism are two areas in which L.A.'s current roster is deficient, especially in the backcourt. Plenty of people are skeptical that a team with a starting backcourt of Doncic and Reaves, both of whom are relatively unathletic and weak defenders, can win it all. One thing this year's playoffs have proven is that speed, athleticism and depth are integral for making a deep run and having a real shot at a championship. It is up to Pelinka and crew to use their limited resources to buttress the roster and put it in position to claim the Larry O'Brien Trophy next summer.
