Tommy Fleetwood has spoken out about his wife and manager who is 23 years older than him

Tommy Fleetwood, who will be part of Rory McIlroy's group for the first two rounds at The Open, has spoken openly about his relationship with wife and manager, Clare Tommy Fleetwood once confessed his life with manager-wife Clare is not what most people would describe as 'normal'. The 34-year-old, who begins his Open Championship campaign at Portrush on Thursday, married Clare, 23 years his senior, in 2017. ‌ She had been his manager before their relationship took a romantic turn. Due to the significant age difference, Clare initially resisted his advances before they eventually got together. They have one child together, Frankie, while Clare has two children from a previous marriage. ‌ Tommy credits Clare for positively impacting his life both on and off the course. Speaking ahead of the 2018 Ryder Cup at Le Golf National, he spoke warmly of the couple's preparations for the tournament and her passion for Manchester City. Everton supporter Fleetwood told The Telegraph:"We had a lovely time searching for a dress for the gala dinner. ‌ "She's a big Man City fan and she's going to bring a little bit of north-west football fannage to the Ryder Cup." He then added: "No, I don't think we've ever been called the norm." The couple have successfully juggled their personal and professional lives after Clare considered stepping back from her managerial role. But after testing the waters, they decided to continue their player-manager arrangement. ‌ Tommy said: "It works very well. I do as I'm told when needed to. When we started, we obviously never knew how it was going to go, and I think we were always open to the idea if it didn't work, then we'd try something else. But luckily for us, we get on so well. "I guess it's our relationship in a way, but we've not had any trouble yet. But then, my entire backroom is formed with people I class as friends first and colleagues second. It's just the way I am." They set a six-month trial period after considering other management possibilities for Tommy. Reflecting on their decision during the couple's appearance on the Performance People podcast in 2023, Clare said: "As we were sat there listening to different proposals, I'm like, 'I can do this.' ‌ "But I just for some reason at the beginning thought I couldn't and I shouldn't. Then we gave it six months, and it worked, so we carried on." Clare also delved into how they strike a balance between business and pleasure, adding: "I talk about work a lot, I can't help it, but I do make a conscious effort [to switch off]. I can see sometimes in his face that he's had enough, which is quite often! ‌ "We put an office in the house and if I need to talk to him about work, he'll come in. The only thing we needed to get right was me not talking about work all of the time. "Tommy's happier going off reading a book, listening to podcasts, he meditates. I'll go off to work if I've got a spare hour. That's my weakness in a way. It was never the plan to work together." Tommy will be in a star-studded group containing home hero Rory McIlroy and Justin Thomas for the first two rounds at Portrush. The trio are late-starters in round one, teeing off at 3.10pm.

Francesco Molinari brings experience of successful match vs. Tiger Woods to Europe's Ryder Cup team

LONDON (AP) — Francesco Molinari, who earned the decisive half point against Tiger Woods the last time Europe won a Ryder Cup in the United States, is back as a vice captain on Luke Donald's team for September's event at Bethpage Black in New York. The Italian joins his brother, Edoardo, Thomas Bjørn and José María Olazábal as vice captains this year. All four were also vice captains under Donald in 2023 when Europe won the Ryder Cup at Marco Simone outside Rome. In 2018, Francesco Molinari became the first European player to win all five of his matches in a Ryder Cup as Bjorn's team triumphed at Le Golf National in Paris. Earlier that year, he won the British Open at Carnoustie, becoming Italy's first major champion. 'It is going to be a big challenge at Bethpage,' Francesco Molinari said in an announcement Monday. 'You just have to look at the stats to see how difficult it is to win the Ryder Cup away from home. It hasn't happened that often recently, so it is a big challenge but it is a big opportunity to try to do something that, if it does happen, will be remembered for a long, long time.' Molinari said he wants to 'transmit my experience' of when he faced Woods at Medinah in 2012 for Olazábal's squad. The victory became known as the 'Miracle at Medinah.' 'Medinah still has a special place in my memories, and in my heart, and I would be really happy and really proud to see this generation of players complete something like that,' Molinari said. Added Donald on Molinari, 'He knows how to win Ryder Cups, having been on three winning teams, and I think that's really important for us. We obviously have a tough task ahead of us trying to win away in New York. 'I think he brings a very calm head,' Donald said. 'He is someone who listens a lot and has good ideas. He speaks up when he feels like he needs to. I love his demeanour. He just doesn't seem to get too flustered. He doesn't seem to get too high or too low. I think that's going to be important in a place like New York, an away Ryder Cup.' The Ryder Cup is scheduled for Sept. 26-28. ___

Francesco Molinari joins brother Edoardo as a European Ryder Cup vice captain

Francesco Molinari will join his brother Edoardo as a European vice captain for the 2025 Ryder Cup at Bethpage Black, New York. Luke Donald has added the younger Molinari brother to a backroom team that also includes Thomas Bjørn and José María Olazábal. Francesco Molinari played in the last European team to retain the Ryder Cup, securing the half point in the final Singles match against Tiger Woods at Medinah in 2012 which ensured that Olazábal's team won the Ryder Cup outright 14½-13½. He previously made his debut alongside his brother Edoardo two years earlier at The Celtic Manor Resort. In 2018, he became the first European player to win all five of his matches in a Ryder Cup, as Bjørn's team triumphed 17½-10½ at Le Golf National in Paris. Earlier that year, he won The Open Championship at Carnoustie, becoming Italy's first Major Champion. Molinari said: 'I'm very happy to be part of the team again. I really enjoyed being part of Luke's backroom team in Rome and trying to help the players. 'Luke is a very smart, switched on individual. He has been very successful and he is an easy person to work with. It's been great to see at firsthand how much he is putting into being the Captain. He did the same two years ago and he's doing it now. He leads by example so that passion trickles down to the players. 'It is going to be a big challenge at Bethpage. You just have to look at the stats to see how difficult it is to win the Ryder Cup away from home. It hasn't happened that often recently, so it is a big challenge but it is a big opportunity to try to do something that, if it does happen, will be remembered for a long, long time. Everyone will give their best and I am very happy to be able to give my contribution to the team. 'I can't wait to be there. I can't wait to try to transmit my experience from Medinah to the players. There will be a few of us who were there in 2012. Some still playing and some others like Luke and myself who are now behind the scenes. Medinah still has a special place in my memories, and in my heart, and I would be really happy and really proud to see this generation of players complete something like that.' European Ryder Cup Captain Luke Donald said: 'I am really excited to announce that Francesco is going to be joining me again as one of my Vice Captains for New York. He was obviously a big part of the team in Rome and to have him and his experience again means a lot to me personally. 'He knows how to win Ryder Cups, having been on three winning teams, and I think that's really important for us. We obviously have a tough task ahead of us trying to win away in New York. 'He has an amazing amount of experience – as a rookie in 2010 with his brother Edoardo, playing at Number 12 in the Singles against Tiger in 2012 when he secured the half point that meant we won outright, and in 2018 when he became the only European player to go 5-0 in a Ryder Cup. 'I think he brings a very calm head. He is someone who listens a lot and has good ideas. He speaks up when he feels like he needs to. 'I love his demeanour. He just doesn't seem to get too flustered. He doesn't seem to get too high or too low. I think that's going to be important in a place like New York, an away Ryder Cup. So I love what he brings and I'm very excited that he's a part of the team again.' Molinari was a playing Captain for Continental Europe against Great Britian & Ireland in the Team Cup in January, as well as the 2023 version of the event, known as the Hero Cup. He has also played in three editions of the Seve Trophy and in total, he has won six times on the DP World Tour, including twice on home soil, claiming the Italian Open in both 2006 and 2016. He won the DP World Tour's Race to Dubai in 2018 and has won twice individually on American soil on the PGA TOUR, claiming the Quicken Loans National in 2018 and the Arnold Palmer Invitational in 2019.
