Tour de France Stage 12 results, standings: Tadej Pogacar takes control of yellow jersey

If Tadej Pogačar goes on to win the Tour de France again this year, further cementing his status as the greatest cyclist alive, Stage 12 on Thursday, July 17, is likely to be remembered as the defining moment that ensured he stayed atop the sport. The 2025 Tour de France entered the French Pyrenees for its most daunting mountain stage thus far, and the favorite to win cycling's biggest event put his stamp on the race with a spectacular ride over a 180.6-kilometer course full of climbs. Pogačar pulled away from the peloton and all of his top challengers up the Hautacam to win Stage 12 and took a commanding lead in the chase for the yellow jersey with French president Emmanuel Macron watching. Pogačar's 20th career Tour de France stage win came one day after he emerged mostly unscathed from a late crash during Stage 11 and put him in position to win the fourth Tour de France of his decorated career. Pogačar entered Thursday's race in second place for the overall 2025 lead, 29 seconds behind Ben Healy. The Slovenian will begin Friday's individual time trial with a 3-minute, 31-second advantage over second-place Jonas Vingegaard. "We had this stage in mind a long time, and we did it," Pogačar said. Best of the rest: Vingegaard and team get a taste of their own medicine on the Tour

Cycling - Tour de France - Stage 12 - Auch to Hautacam - Hautacam, France - July 17, 2025 Team Visma | Lease a Bike's Jonas Vingegaard after crossing the finish line in second place on stage 12 REUTERS/Benoit Tessier HAUTACAM, France - While Tadej Pogacar has been enjoying a dream Tour de France run this year, his main rival Jonas Vingegaard and his once almighty team are now closer to third than first place after just one high mountain stage on Thursday. Vingegaard was left shattered by Pogacar's brutal attack in the climb up to Hautacam in the 12th stage, leaving the two-time champion 3:31 behind his rival in the overall standings. "On the last climb Tadej was clearly the best and in the end Jonas also suffered a lot. Tomorrow is a new day, we will keep fighting," Vingegaard's Visma–Lease a Bike sports director Grischa Niermann told reporters. "He is the best of the rest." In 2022, Visma-Lease a Bike riders pulled off a tactical coup in the Alps by trapping Pogacar, before Vingegaard effectively sealed his maiden Tour title in Hautacam by humiliating the Slovenian. He added another title in 2023 by beating Pogacar by more than seven minutes, with the Slovenian having broken his wrist 2-1/2 months before the Tour. Pogacar emerged triumphant at last year's edition, when Vingegaard's preparation was hampered by a freak crash a few months before the Tour. Top stories Swipe. Select. Stay informed. SUFFER FEST Pogacar hammered Vingegaard in the first individual time trial and was merciless on Thursday as the Dane's teammates were a shadow of their dominant selves. Key mountain lieutenants Matteo Jorgenson and Simon Yates were of no help as they struggled as early as the Col du Soulor and left Vingegaard fighting on his own at the bottom of Hautacam. Memories of the humiliation three years ago must have been at the forefront of Pogacar's mind and everything clicked when he realised Visma-Lease a Bike were not as strong as he had expected. Their attempts at upping the pace failed and the world champion smelled blood. "The biggest switch in my head happened when I saw what Visma tried. They followed their plan, but I noticed not everyone (in their team) was feeling great," he said. "That was the moment I mentally switched — I thought, OK, today can actually be a really, really good day. Johnny (Jhonatan Narvaez) was still there, Marc Soler wasn't far behind — we even thought he might come back. Adam (Yates) was there, Tim (Wellens) was up front. All of that gave us the belief, the mental boost, that today could really go our way." At the end of the day, Pogacar won a Tour stage by 2:10 - his biggest margin on a Tour win. "Based on my feelings, I feel like it is the best moment of my career. I'm riding in a rainbow (world champion) jersey. I ride with an amazing team. Amazing teammates, so it's like a fairytale for me riding on the bike these couple of years now," he said. "I just feel like until I enjoy this bike riding stuff and enjoy this suffer fest but with the fans on the side of the road, then I think I can still go on." REUTERS

Tour de France Stage 11 results, standings: Tadej Pogacar survives crash, Abrahamsen wins

Stage 11 of the 2025 Tour de France ended with the same rider wearing the yellow jersey. But plenty happened in between Thursday's race through Toulouse as part of cycling's most prestigious event. Jonas Abrahamsen out-sprinted Mauro Schmid in a photo finish after the two broke free from the peloton and held off a late challenge from Mathieu van der Poel, capping off a competitive day of racing that also featured a late scare for the defending Tour de France champion. Three-time Tour de France winner and 2025 favorite Tadej Pogačar survived a crash after contact with another bike about five kilometers from the finish line. He fell to the pavement coming around a turn and briefly lost touch with the group of Tour de France leaders. Pogačar was permitted to catch up with minimal damage done to his chances this year, a show of sportsmanship that became the subject of debate following the race. A UAE Team Emirates official told reporters Pogačar suffered scrapes to his arms and legs from the crash but "it's a not a big injury." The incident did ensure Ben Healy held off Pogačar and kept the yellow jersey heading into a crucial mountain stage set for Thursday. Tour de France Stage 10 results, standings: Simon Yates wins, Ben Healy nabs yellow jersey

The first mountain stage of the 2025 Tour de France led to a shake up in the race for the yellow jersey at cycling's most prestigious event. Simon Yates of Great Britain won Stage 10, which featured eight different ascents and challenged riders with climbs totaling nearly 14,600 feet. But it was the jockeying for position going on behind him amongst those challenging for the overall lead that provided the most drama. Advertisement Ben Healy, who represents Ireland and won Stage 6 last week, grabbed the yellow jersey from Tadej Pogačar. Healy finished in third place during the stage, 31 seconds behind Yates but more than 4 minutes, 20 seconds ahead of Pogačar. Healy started Monday's race ‒ a 165.3-kilometer course that began in Ennezat and ended on Puy de Sancy mountain ‒ outside of the top 10 in the chase for the yellow jersey. He'll now keep it for at least two days, with the first rest day of the 2025 Tour de France scheduled for Tuesday, July 15. Pogačar sits in second place in the overall standings and trails Healy by 29 seconds.
