Special counsel to question Marine investigator as witness
Special Prosecutor Lee Myeong-hyeon's team looking into the 2023 death of a young Marine said Wednesday it plans to question a former Marine investigator, who led a probe into the death case, as a witness. Col. Park Jung-hun will appear at the special counsel's office in the afternoon to be questioned about the allegations that top military officials and the presidential office intervened in his initial probe of the death of Cpl. Chae Su-geun, who died while searching for torrential rain victims in July 2023. Lee's team has been investigating former President Yoon Suk Yeol on charges of pressuring then Defense Minister Lee Jong-sup to change the results of Park's investigation. Park was indicted on insubordination charges after rejecting the pressure from above but was acquitted by a district court early this year. He was recently reinstated to his previous position. Special counsel raids defense ministry, nat'l security office in Marine death probe
Special Prosecutor Lee Myeong-hyeon's team on Thursday raided the defense ministry and the presidential National Security Office as part of an investigation into allegations that top military officials and the presidential office intervened in an initial probe of the 2023 death of a young Marine. The team reportedly sent investigators to the NSO, the ministry's spokesperson's room, and other places and residences of those involved in the allegations in the morning to secure evidence. The team has been investigating the allegations that former President Yoon Suk Yeol vented his anger and took issue with the results of the military's investigation into the death of Cpl. Chae Su-geun, who was swept away by a swollen stream during a search for torrential rain victims in July 2023. At that time, Yoon allegedly became "enraged," saying "Who would be willing to be a division commander if he is punished for an incident like this?" The team reportedly plans to seize NSO meeting minutes related to Yoon's alleged resentment and materials on the defense ministry's responses to media reports on the Marine's death. During a briefing, Assistant Special Prosecutor Jeong Min-young said the team will "look into what kind of contact the involved parties made via cell phones and other means," adding they will continue to do their utmost to determine the truth behind the allegations. Earlier in the day, the presidential office said it will actively cooperate with the ongoing investigation into the NSO. (Yonhap)

Special counsel visits Marine's grave
A special counsel team formed to investigate allegations surrounding the 2023 death of a Marine and the subsequent probe by the military paid tribute at the late Marine's grave in Daejeon on Tuesday, a day before the official launch of the special counsel's investigation. Special prosecutor Lee Myeong-hyeon and his team are expected to look into various allegations, including negligence and influence peddling in connection with the death of Cpl. Chae Su-geun, who was swept away in a swollen stream during a search and rescue mission for flood victims in July 2023. On Tuesday, the team led by Lee visited the Daejeon National Cemetery, where Chae is buried. After Chae died during flood recovery operations in Yecheon County, North Gyeongsang Province, allegations emerged that senior commanders had ordered the high-risk search mission without providing life vests, and that the presidential office and the Ministry of National Defense had exerted undue influence to shield the commanders from legal accountability.
