Vintage Chicago Tribune: Tradition of acceptance speeches at political conventions began in Chicago1932: Franklin D. Roosevelt became the first presidential candidate to deliver his acceptance speech during his political party's convention in Chicago.
Vintage Chicago Tribune: Chicago Cubs who have hit for the cycle1957: Lee Walls hit for the cycle. The 'often lose but never quit' Chicago Cubs lost to the Cincinnati Reds in 10 innings, but the 24-year-old outfielder's cycle became the first in major league baseball in almost three years.
1976: Artist Marc Chagall announced he was giving Chicago a bicentennial gift — eight stained-glass windows called 'America Windows,' which depict American ideas and symbols. The windows were installed in 1977.
