UK's Starmer defeats wrecking amendment on welfare reform

LONDON, July 1 (Reuters) - British Prime Minister Keir Starmer cleared the first hurdle in his quest to reform the welfare system on Tuesday, when lawmakers opposed to the proposed law failed to halt its progress with a so-called "reasoned amendment". Several lawmakers tabled a "reasoned amendment," used to express opposition to a proposed law, to the welfare reforms, which if it had passed would have halted the bill. The attempt failed with 328 to 149 lawmakers voting against the amendment. Lawmakers will immediately hold another vote on whether or not to progress the bill to the next stages of the parliamentary process. If the government also wins that vote, those next stages are scheduled for July 9.

How each Senator voted on Trump's agenda bill

The US Senate narrowly passed President Donald Trump's agenda bill Tuesday, after a weekend of negotations and a marathon voting session on amendments. The chamber voted 50-50, with Vice President JD Vance casting the tie-breaking vote. Three Republican senators — Rand Paul, Susan Collins and Thom Tillis — voted with all 47 Democrats against the legislation. The multi-trillion-dollar bill now heads back to the US House of Representatives for a vote on the Senate's amended legislation.

Trump's ‘Big Beautiful Bill' is a debt bomb. Can the ‘Pennsylvania Plan' defuse it?

With the US Senate voting to move an updated version of US President Donald Trump's sweeping budget legislation – the 'One Big, Beautiful Bill Act' – forward in the legislative process, the controversial bill now comes closer to becoming law. It has also brought the country's mounting debt back into the spotlight. Rife with spending increases, tax cuts and no additional revenue sources to compensate, the bill has been estimated to add US$3.3 trillion to the nation's debt over the next decade; a deficit that stands at about US$36.2 trillion. In response to renewed concerns over US debt, a nascent framework on how to rebalance deficits away from foreign holders – the 'Pennsylvania Plan' – has also received attention. Here, we provide an update on the latest developments in the saga of the 'One Big, Beautiful Bill' and its relationship to the recommendations made in the 'Pennsylvania Plan'. What is the bill, and how close is it to passage? The US Senate agreed to hear debate on the bill in a narrow 51–49 decision after a long weekend session, following another close party-line approval from the House of Representatives last month.
