How Hong Kong can lead in patient-focused ethical AI healthcare
Hong Kong is uniquely positioned to lead the world in AI-based advances in healthcare. This was the view expressed by experts at the recent annual Asia Summit on Global Health. Firms like Bain and Company similarly see diverse patient populations and strong government support as key advantages in the Asia-Pacific's development as a hub for medical technology innovation. This raises big hopes and important ethical questions about AI's role in the future of healthcare. As Hong Kong strives to lead innovation in the field, will it ensure AI application is ethical and genuinely serves the interests of patients? The evolving ethics of AI in biomedicine was the topic of a recent seminar we spoke at, hosted by the Medical Ethics and Humanities Unit at the University of Hong Kong's Li Ka Shing Faculty of Medicine. The forum discussed key ethical frameworks and encouraged thoughtful public conversation on the use of AI in healthcare. Ethical reflection, discussion with stakeholders and carefully crafted guidelines are all vital to ensuring this technology is used to improve human lives. If implemented well, AI has tremendous potential for good. It may enhance patient experience, improve population health, reduce costs and increase physician well-being by reducing fatigue and making the work more meaningful. With medical imaging, for example, AI's capability in analysing images exceeds the human eye. AI algorithms based on deep learning models can detect anomalies easy for a human to miss. AI can therefore enhance doctors' ability to determine the results of tests for rectal cancer, lung disease and other illnesses. This elevates the standard of care, a clear win for patients. Similarly, where AI is used to enhance robotic-assisted surgeries , this means greater precision. If the ethics of data storage can be addressed, such applications should be relatively uncontroversial.

How Li Ka-shing Landed in the Middle of US-China Tiff
When President Donald Trump called for the US to retake control of the Panama Canal during his inauguration speech in January, it set off a chain of events that landed Hong Kong tycoon Li Ka-shing in the middle of a US-China tiff. Li, whose conglomerate CK Hutchison Holdings Ltd. owns two port operations on the Panama Canal, came under political pressure from the Trump administration after the US leader falsely claimed that the strategic waterway was operated by China.

Talks deadline for CK Hutchison US$23 billion Panama ports deal passes on Sunday
A deadline for exclusive talks on a US$23 billion sale of global port stakes by Hong Kong tycoon Li Ka-shing's CK Hutchison Holdings passed without a deal on Sunday, with analysts expecting complex negotiations to be extended amid intense US-China geopolitical rivalry. Advertisement The controversial transaction involved CK Hutchison selling stakes in 43 ports, including two at either end of the Panama Canal, to a consortium led by Terminal Investment Limited, an affiliate of the world's largest container line, MSC, and American asset manager BlackRock. The July 27 deadline was set 145 days from the company's March 4 exchange filing that first announced the exclusive negotiation period. Shipping and legal experts earlier told the Post that they were not optimistic the deal would be signed in its original form by Sunday, saying it could be subject to substantial changes given the political headwinds and regulatory hurdles in both Panama and mainland China. By midnight on Sunday, Hutchison had not disclosed any information on the deal. Amid the ongoing trade tensions, a high-level American business delegation was expected to visit Beijing this week, the Post reported exclusively. Sources said the trip would be organised by the US-China Business Council.

China's Cosco Eyes Veto Rights in Deal for Tycoon Li's Ports
China's biggest shipping company is set to join the global consortium that's acquiring Hong Kong tycoon Li Ka-shing's overseas ports, and is requesting a powerful role in the group in order to secure Beijing's blessing for the controversial deal, people familiar with the matter said. State-owned China Cosco Shipping Corp. is asking to have veto rights or equivalent powers in the entity taking over the 43 ports, including two strategically important ones along the Panama Canal, the people said, asking not to be identified discussing private matters. Cosco has argued such rights are necessary to block any decisions that are potentially harmful to China's interests, the people added.
