Man accused of raping teenage girl in Athlone to apply for High Court bail ahead of trial
Liam Cosgrove Today at 08:22 A south African man has been sent forward to stand trial accused of raping a teenage girl in a midlands town earlier this year. The 23-year-old, who is an asylum seeker, appeared before a sitting of Athlone District Court today (Wednesday) where he was served with a book of evidence before Judge Peter White.

Up to 60 jobs at risk as €20m Carrickmacross facility faces sale amid inflation and market challenges. Government bosses are in talks to try and find a buyer for a Monaghan based manufacturing plant after its original investors confirmed its business structure was no longer manageable due to prevailing market conditions and inflationary pressures. The Newbaze plant in Carrickmacross was opened in November of 2019, around four months before the outbreak of the Covid pandemic which led to two Level 5 lockdowns and the effective shutting down of socio-economic life for months on end. Liam Cosgrove Today at 06:00 Russian president Vladimir Putin has been accused of having the blood of a Reuters news employee with strong links to the midlands 'on his hands' as his Irish born mother desperately seeks answers over the circumstances which led up to his death. Thirty-eight-year-old Ryan Evans was working as a safety adviser with news agency Reuters when a missile struck the hotel he had been staying in with colleagues in the city of Kramatorsk on August 24 last year.

Liam Cosgrove Today at 10:13 A father of four who drove at speeds of more than 150kmh as it followed a car that was involved in a crash that claimed the lives of two teenagers as they made their way to a Debs ball in Monaghan has been handed an 18 month suspended prison sentence. Father of four Alin Sorin Gatea (46) of 4 Carn Heights, Clones, Co Monaghan, appeared at a sitting of Monaghan District Court to face five counts of dangerous driving at various locations between Clones and Monaghan on July 31, 2023.
