Call to create awareness on RTI among tribal women
Andhra Pradesh State RTI Commissioner Rehana Begum on Friday (July 18, 2025) said the Right to Information Act was a powerful tool that can help tribal communities access information about government schemes, services, and entitlements specifically meant for them. Speaking at an awareness programme organised in virtual mode, she called on Adivasi women to use the Act for their welfare. She said women in tribal regions often faced challenges due to illiteracy and lack of access to information. However, by identifying and training active and enthusiastic tribal women, it was possible to cultivate a culture of questioning and awareness. Once equipped with knowledge of the RTI Act, these women could play a key role in solving local issues by helping others access critical information, she said. The five-day awareness program was organised in Anakapalli district from July 14 to July 18 by LibTech India and the United Forum for RTI Campaign, Andhra Pradesh, in collaboration with various voluntary organisations. Tribal women from the districts of Manyam, Alluri Sitarama Raju, and Prakasam participated in the event. Representatives from LibTech India, including BDS Kishore, and members of the United Forum for RTI Campaign also took part in the event.

RTI Act a tool for empowerment, Adivasi women told
Vijayawada: State Information (RTI) commissioner Rehana Begum has urged Adivasi women to use the Right to Information (RTI) Act as a powerful tool for empowerment. She emphasised that awareness of the RTI Act can help tribal communities access crucial information about government schemes, services, and entitlements specifically meant for them. Rehana interacted with tribal women from Alluri Sitarama Raju (ASR), Manyam, and Prakasam districts during a virtual awareness programme on Friday. She noted that women in tribal regions often face challenges due to illiteracy and lack of access to information. However, she said that a culture of awareness and questioning can be fostered by identifying and training active and enthusiastic tribal women. Once equipped with knowledge of the RTI Act, these women can play a key role in resolving local issues by helping others obtain critical information. "State and central governments are spending huge amounts for the welfare and development of tribal populations across the country. It is your right to know how much money is coming to your village and your people. Take advantage of the RTI Act to get the details of the schemes and programmes," said Rehana Begum. Employments under MGNREGS dipped in state, claims report
Ranchi: Jharkhand has registered a dip in workers employed under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS) in a year despite an increase in their registrations, a report released on Saturday claimed. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Titled 'MGNREGA in Jharkhand: A Data Driven Assessment For FY 2024-25', the report claimed that the number of workers dipped to 9.7% in the 2024-25 FY compared to the previous fiscal. The report was compiled by LibTech India, MGNREGA Watch and Right to Food Campaign using data on the govt-run MGNREGA dashboard. "In the 2024-25 FY, the number of households registered under the scheme rose by 5.2% compared to the 2023-24 FY. Though it indicated that more households were keen to access the benefits of the scheme, the number of households that worked and workers employed in the program declined by 7.4% and 9.7%, respectively," the report said. There were 73.2 lakh households registered under the scheme in 2024-25 FY. Of them, 20.2 lakh households and 23.1 lakh workers were employed under the program. James Herenj, convenor of MGNREGA Watch, said low employment is forcing a rise in migration of workers from the state. "There was assembly election as model code of conduct led to a halt in development projects. Athough many registered for work, it was found that their job cards had been deleted from the database," he added. Officials from the rural development department did not respond when contacted.

MGNREGA wages must rise to ₹400 per day: Jairam Ramesh
MGNREGA wages cannot be set by the arbitrary whims of the government, the Congress said on Wednesday (May 21, 2025), reiterating its demand for the rural employment guarantee scheme's wages to be hiked to ₹400 per day. Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh was reacting to the latest report by LibTech India researchers, which pointed out that only 7% of households get the promised 100 days of work under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA). Also Read: Explained | The funding and demand for MGNREGA Mr. Ramesh said the LibTech report documents several crucial gaps in MGNREGA implementation, including a mismatch between the scheme's coverage and actual delivery. The number of households registered in the scheme rose 8.6% between the financial years of 2023-2024 and 2024-25, even as average days of employment per household fell 7.1%, average workdays per person dropped 4.3%, and the number of households completing the guaranteed 100 days of work fell by 11.9%. Budget shortfall One of the earliest indications of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's 'uncaring attitude and shortsightedness' was his mockery of MGNREGA on the floor of the Parliament in 2015, Mr. Ramesh said, noting that the scheme's 2024-25 budget of ₹86,000 crore is widely considered inadequate. The People's Action for Employment Guarantee (PAEG) had recommended a budget allocation of ₹2.64 lakh crore for 2022-23 itself, while the World Bank recommends that at least 1.7% of the country's GDP should be allocated to this programme. The 2024-25 allocation only accounts for 0.26% of GDP. During the Congress's Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra, MGNREGA workers from across the country raised several problems with the programme, including low wages, during a Jan Sunwai held at Ranka in Jharkhand on February 14, 2024. Eight months later, these issues continue to persist, in a government-created human, economic, and institutional tragedy, Mr. Ramesh said. 'MGNREGA wages cannot be set by the arbitrary whims of the government. A Standing Committee must be established to evaluate the need for changes in the wage rate,' the Congress leader said, noting that wages under the scheme have stagnated for a decade. 'An increase in MGNREGA wages - as envisioned in the Congress Nyay Patra for the 2024 Lok Sabha Elections - assumes renewed importance. MGNREGA wages must rise to reach ₹400 per day,' he added.
