As a child, I was fascinated by clowns...' Liev Schreiber reveals inspiration for acting career

Liev Schreiber was inspired to become an actor by his passion for clowns and the circus as a child. The 57-year-old star has revealed he was always intrigued by clowns from his trips to the circus with his grandfather Alex Milgram - his mother Heather Milgram's father - and the first seeds of his career were shown when he wanted to entertain his family. In an interview with Italian publication IO Donna, he said: "As a child, I was fascinated by clowns and enjoyed entertaining my family . My mother was a bit of a hippie; she placed more importance on art than money: she was a taxi driver, and as soon as she had some, she'd spend it on taking us to the movies or the theatre." Liev insists his grandfather Alex - who emigrated to America from Ukraine and played the cello - was more of an influence and inspiration for him to go into acting than his dad, Tell Schreiber, who was an actor and theatre director. When asked what influence Tell had on him, Liev said: "Perhaps I was more inspired by the circus, where my grandfather took me. "At the exit, they sold little swords for children, and I remember playing with them in front of Madison Square Garden, thinking about The Legend of Robin Hood with Errol Flynn. My parents separated when I was four, and I grew up mostly with my mother, who was a bit of a hippie socialist who even lived in squats; artistic education was more important than anything else. We went to a movie theatre on Eighth Street where they showed old black-and-white films, but I think I appreciated them more as I grew older." Liev - who has vivid memories of watching films starring Charlie Chaplin and the Marx Brothers with his mother - is dad to 23-month-old daughter Hazel, his child with wife Taylor Neisen. The Ray Donovan star is enjoying being a father in his 50s and says children give you a solid grounding when you work in Hollywood. Liev - who has two teenage children from his relationship with British actress Naomi Watts - said: "I could have had a more relaxed life, but with a small child, you have to provide stability, respect sleep and meal times. "Children keep you grounded. When I had my first two, who are now 17 and 18, it was a strange time: my ex and I were the centre of attention, and success can make you lose your sense of reality. Children bring you back to what's truly important."

Liev Schreiber Supports His Trans Daughter, Kai

Liev Schreiber and Naomi Watts — who were together for 11 years — share a 16-year-old daughter named Kai, who is transgender. Now, speaking about his daughter's transition for the first time, Liev said Kai's coming out was pretty simple for their family. In a new interview with Variety, the X-Men star revealed that Kai never actually sat down and told him and Naomi that she's trans. 'Kai was always who Kai is,' he said, recalling that 'the most profound moment was her asking us to change her pronouns.' 'To be honest with you, it didn't feel like that big of a deal to me only because Kai had been so feminine for so long.' Liev and Naomi also share a 17-year-old son named Sasha. Since their separation in 2016, the exes appear to have maintained a strong coparenting relationship. Kai is beginning to make a name for herself in the modeling world, having recently walked the runway for Valentino during Paris Fashion Week. Praising his daughter, Liev said, 'Kai is such a fighter. It's important that she goes, 'Hey, I am trans,' and, 'Look at me.'' In 2025, uplifting the trans community is more important than ever, and so, Kai, Liev, and his wife, Taylor Neisen, will be among those supporting the Ali Forney Center at the A Place At The Table Gala this week in New York. For context, the Ali Forney Center is an important organization that provides stability, housing, and support to LGBTQ+ youth experiencing homelessness. Talking about why their involvement with the organization is so necessary, Liev said: 'This isn't just about representing the trans community. This is actually a community of people who don't have great resources, who don't have access to help, who aren't being protected and looked after by their families. These are people who are being rejected. These are people who are experiencing the harshest version of humanity that we can offer, and some of them are not surviving it.' 'We got to bear that in mind when we go out there and glam ourselves up and get ready to be seen, you know? That what we're doing is actually raising money for a community that desperately needs it,' he continued. As you may have seen, Liev's comments come shortly after Robert De Niro made headlines for his similarly brilliant comments of support towards his daughter, Airyn, who publicly came out as trans last week. Notably, when asked by Variety to offer advice to other parents of trans children, Liev was cautious of making generalizations. 'I don't know the answer for your kid,' he responded, 'I don't know what it's like for you to be a trans dad. I don't know how you were brought up. I don't know what religion you encountered or what your spirituality is. And for me to tell you what I think about my kid feels like an overstep.' 'I guess if I would say anything to someone who's having trouble with their trans teen or their adolescent trans kid it's, 'Teenagers are a headache. They're hard.' It doesn't matter whether they're trans or not because you'll come out of this,' he added. 'But a trans teen is going to be a teen. They're such a pain so much of the time, and Kai is as feisty and outspoken as they come.' That is one proud father! You can find Liev's full interview with Variety here.

Ray Donovan actor Liev Schreiber talks about transgender daughter: ‘Kai is such a fighter'

Hollywood actor Liev Schreiber is publicly supporting his daughter Kai and reflecting on his journey as the parent of a transgender child. Speaking to Variety on Thursday, Liev shared that Kai, now 17, never formally came out to him or her mother, actor Naomi Watts. "Kai was always who Kai is. But I suppose the most profound moment was her asking us to change her pronouns. To be honest with you, it didn't feel like that big of a deal to me only because Kai had been so feminine for so long," said the Ray Donovan star. Liev praised his daughter's strength, calling her "such a fighter," but also emphasised the importance of being seen. "It's important that she goes, 'Hey, I am trans,' and, 'Look at me,'" he said. Ahead of his appearance at an event supporting homeless LGBTQ youth in New York recently, Liev also spoke about the significance of standing with "a community of people who don't have great resources, who don't have access to help, who aren't being protected and looked after by their families." When it comes to raising a transgender child, Liev was cautious about giving generalised advice. He noted that it "feels like an overstep" to do so, and downplayed the idea that the experience is drastically different from parenting any other teenager. "Teenagers are a headache. They're hard. It doesn't matter whether they're trans or not because you'll come out of this. But a trans teen is going to be a teen," he said. Kai is the younger of Liev and Naomi's two children. Their son Sasha was born in 2007, followed by Kai in 2008. The actors met at the Met Gala in 2005 and separated in 2016 after what they described as a period of relationship struggles. A post shared by Kai Schreiber (@kaischreiberrr) Earlier this year in March, Kai marked a major milestone in her modeling career by walking the runway for Valentino at Paris Fashion Week 2025. Celebrating the moment, she posted a series of images on Instagram as well.
