Dear Mary: Help! My neighbour keeps getting me drunk

Q. We have a neighbour who always overfills my glass. I beg her not to. Even if I commit the solecism of holding my hand over the glass to stop her, she will wait and then sneak up behind me and pour more in. I like her but I always reel away from her house pie-eyed, and wake with a hangover. What do I do? – D.S., Delhi, Catskills, USA A. Punish your neighbour by stocking up on silicone stretch lids, as used by the fastidious to cover the likes of yoghurt pots in the fridge. Having extracted a promise from her that she will not sneak up to refill your glass, secrete a stretchable lid over it. Since these lids are invisible, she will have only herself to blame when she suffers the splash-back consequences. This should put a stop to her meddling in future. Q. I saw in Waitrose that the meat counter had huge reductions on ribeye and fillet steak – it was in the evening just before closing time. So I waited for the boy to come and serve me – my intention was to hoard it in my deep freeze for my sons. Then an older Sloane couple came up and stood right behind me and started making pointed remarks on what they were going to buy – and I ended up feeling bullied and didn't dare get more than three steaks. When I glanced back they were cleaning up on all the savings and yet I had been there first and it was I who should have had this advantage. How should I have tackled this, Mary? – S.H., Shrewton, Wilts A. You should have magnanimously enquired of the couple how much of the steak they were hoping to buy, since you would then hold back from bagging the lot as you had intended. In this way it would have been they who walked away with three steaks, feeling gratitude towards you, and you who cleaned up with the hoard. Q. My husband and I are taking a house on the Ligurian coast and letting our daughters bring their boyfriends. Our problem is that the boyfriends are not 'housetrained'. We really mind them sitting at the lunch table without shirts, but our daughters are reluctant to say anything 'snobbish' in case they make the youths feel insecure. Help! – Name and address withheld A. Casually announce that the mayor of Portofino – 'who is a frightful bore' – has said he is going to drop in for lunch one day so would they mind wearing shirts at lunch just in case. When they google the mayor of Portofino, they will see that he is striking back against the tourist slobbery perpetrated mainly by the English, including being shirtless. It will be an eye-opener for the youths to learn that shirtlessness could be considered offensive, while you personally will have ducked association with snobbery.

Build a trip to the Italian Riviera with Lego and their latest set for adults

If you can't manage a holiday to Italy this year, you can bring it to your living room or office with an amazing Lego display designed by a fan. As holiday destinations go, you don't get much better than the Italian Riviera. It's not cheap but while neither is Lego, their latest set aimed at adults is at least something you can keep, and customise, forever. The Riviera set is part of the Lego Ideas line, that includes the likes of a Pixar Luxo Jr. model and a massive Botanical Garden. The original design was created by Alex Sahli from the US, and he'll get 1% of the profits from the retail version once it's released this August. As you can see, the set involves a picturesque town on the Ligurian coast, complete with three separate buildings – with multiple removable floors – and a fishing boat. The buildings all have detailed interiors, with one being a gelato store, one a fish market, and another a diving equipment shop – although they all include living areas for the shop owners as well. There's also 10 Lego minifigures in the set, including a fisherman, various tourists, and a grandmother teaching her grandson to make traditional trofie pasta. The whole set measures 34 cm wide by 31 cm, with the highest point being 23 cm. It's made up of 3,251 pieces, so it's a pretty huge set, which explains why it costs £249.99 in the UK, from Lego stores or the official website. More Trending 'I've always been passionate about travel, and Italy stands out as my favourite destination. Its blend of natural landscapes and architectural beauty is truly inspiring,' says creator Alex Sahli. 'My submission is centred around the villages of Cinque Terre. One of the key structural challenges I faced was incorporating buildings at various angles while ensuring overall stability. I'm especially proud of the vibrant colours and the textural variety throughout the build – particularly in the water, houses, and stonework. I'm also pleased with how the tile roofing turned out; it's a simple design, but it functions effectively and complements the overall aesthetic'. As set number 21359, Italian Riveria will go on sale on August 10, unless you're a Lego Insider member (which requires only a free sign-up), in which case you can buy it from August 7. If you get the set between August 7 and 13, you'll also receive a free Mediterranean Scene set, which isn't something you can buy separately and will only be available as a gift with purchase during those dates. Official – Inter Milan & Argentina Midfielder Valentin Carboni Joins Genoa On Season-Long Loan Deal

Valentin Carboni has officially joined Genoa on a season-long loan deal from Inter Milan. The Grifone have officially announced the 20-year-old's arrival on their homepage. The loan deal for Carboni does not include a purchase option. Genoa have signed Valentin Carboni on loan from Inter Milan. The 20-year-old joins the Ligurian club on loan with a purchase option. Rather, it is just a season-long dry loan deal. This reflects the fact that Inter still see Carboni as part of their future plans. Therefore, the Nerazzurri don't want there to be any risk of losing control of the Argentine's future this summer. Rather, the priority is playing time. Reportedly, Inter have agreed to pay Genoa a bonus of up to €1 million based on the amount of playing time that Carboni receives. Valentin Carboni Joins Genoa On Loan From Inter Milan Valentin Carboni joined Marseille on loan last summer. The French club had a purchase option, whilst Inter had a buyback option. However, an ACL tear in October derailed Carboni's season. He was unable to play for the rest of the season, recovering from his injury. However, Carboni was able to return from that major knee injury. The Argentine was part of Inter's squad at the Club World Cup this summer. Carboni scored his first senior goal for the Nerazzurri at the tournament. He came off the bench to score the stoppage time winner against Urawa Red Diamonds in the group stage. Meanwhile, Carboni has already won three senior caps for Argentina. Carboni had also spent the 2023-24 season on loan with Monza. This was a similar arrangement to the 20-year-old's loan move to Genoa this summer. Therefore, this move to Genoa will be one that Inter hopes can allow Carboni to finally build real momentum at senior level.
