No summons to HDFC Bank CEO but probe at crucial stage: Police to HC
MUMBAI: Following the recusal of four Bombay high court judges, a division bench of justices Makarand Karnik and NR Borkar on Monday finally heard a petition filed by HDFC Bank chief executive Sashidhar Jagdishan seeking to quash a bribery case registered against him by the trust that manages the city's prominent Lilavati Hospital. During the hearing on Monday, the police informed the bench that the investigation against Jagdishan was at a crucial stage, but no summons would be issued to him. Meanwhile, the Lilavati Kirtilal Mehta Medical Trust, which manages the Lilavati Hospital, has also filed a separate petition seeking the transfer of the case to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) due to the lack of police action against Jagdishan. The trust had alleged that Jagdishan had accepted kickbacks worth ₹2.05 crore in exchange for providing financial advice to help the hospital's erstwhile trustees, including a certain Chetan Mehta, retain illegal control of the trust. The FIR was registered on May 29 under sections 406 (criminal breach of trust), 409 (criminal breach of trust by a public servant) and 420 (cheating) of the Indian Penal Code, pursuant to orders issued by a metropolitan magistrate court. Jagdishan had then approached the high court for quashing the FIR, arguing that it was baseless and malicious. However, over the last month, four high court judges recused themselves from hearing Jagdishan's petition. The case was first listed before a bench of justices Ajey Gadkari and Rajesh Patil on June 18. Justice Patil, however, recused himself from hearing the matter. 'My brother (justice Patil) does not take up matters relating to HDFC,' justice Gadkari had said, without elaborating further. The matter was then mentioned before a bench led by justice Sarang Kotwal. However, he, too, recused himself without providing an explanation. On June 26, when the matter was listed before a bench of justices MS Sonak and Jitendra Jain, the latter disclosed that he held shares of HDFC Bank. Advocate Nitin Pradhan, the counsel for the trust's authorised representative, Prashant Mehta, objected to this, following which justice Jain recused himself from the matter. When the matter came up before a division bench of justices Ravindra Ghuge and Gautam Ankhad on July 9, the latter recused himself from hearing it, without explaining why. Jagdishan then approached the Supreme Court for relief, arguing that he hadn't got a hearing in the Bombay high court for three weeks. He also claimed he had nothing to do with the matter and it was affecting his personal reputation. However, the apex court did not entertain his plea, observing that the matter was already listed for hearing before the Bombay high court. The high court will now take up the matter on July 23.

SC declines interim relief to HDFC MD Sashidhar Jagdishan in Lilavati bribery case
The Supreme Court on Friday refused to grant any interim protection to HDFC Bank Managing Director and CEO Sashidhar Jagdishan in a bribery case linked to the governance dispute at Mumbai's Lilavati Hospital, directing him instead to raise all arguments before the Bombay High Court, where his plea to quash the criminal case is scheduled to be heard on July 14. The apex court's order came a day after it agreed to hear Jagdishan's petition seeking quashing of an FIR against him. (HT file photo) A bench of Justices PS Narasimha and R Mahadevan, while declining to intervene at this stage, noted that although the matter had seen repeated judicial recusals in the high court, it was now finally listed for hearing. 'We are informed that the matter is listed before the Bombay High Court on July 14. In view of this, we are not inclined to entertain this petition,' the court said in its order. It added that Jagdishan's quashing plea was earlier listed on June 18, 25, and 26, but could not be taken up due to judges recusing themselves. 'In this background, we hope and trust that the high court will take up the matter on the designated date.' Senior advocate Mukul Rohatgi, appearing for Jagdishan, sought urgent relief from the Supreme Court, contending that a 'frivolous FIR' had been filed to 'harass' the bank's top executive. 'I am the MD of the bank and I have nothing to do with the inter se disputes among the trustees of Lilavati. A frivolous FIR has been filed against me. No proceedings should be taken out against me. I am suffering and the bank is suffering,' Rohatgi told the bench. He further expressed apprehensions of coercive action, stating, 'The idea is to summon the MD to the police station and create havoc for the bank.' Also Read: SC to hear on July 4 HDFC Bank MD's plea against bribery FIR But the court was not convinced. 'You make all these arguments before the high court. It is unfortunate that many judges have recused, but it is listed now on July 14,' the bench retorted. The apex court's order came a day after it agreed to hear Jagdishan's petition seeking quashing of an FIR lodged against him by the Mumbai Police on the basis of a complaint filed by the Lilavati Kirtilal Mehta Medical Trust, which runs the prestigious Lilavati Hospital in Bandra. The FIR, registered by Bandra Police on May 29 following directions from a local magistrate, accuses Jagdishan of accepting ₹2.05 crore in bribes between March 2022 and June 2023 to favour a group led by former trustee Chetan Mehta in internal decisions of the Trust. He has been booked under sections 406 (criminal breach of trust), 409 (criminal breach of trust by public servant or banker), and 420 (cheating) of the Indian Penal Code. The Trust alleged that Jagdishan misused his position as the head of a prominent private bank to interfere in the internal affairs of the charitable institution, manipulating its governance structure. It claimed the payments were part of a larger conspiracy to marginalise other trustees and gain control of the Trust's functioning. In a public statement last month, the Trust even sought a CBI probe into the alleged wrongdoing. The controversy is rooted in a long-standing power tussle within the Trust, and has intensified following the death of Kishor Mehta, one of its founding trustees, in April this year. His son, Prashant Mehta, alleged that Jagdishan's role in the revival of loan recovery proceedings by HDFC Bank against a Mehta-linked firm, Splendour Gems Ltd, led to mental and physical harassment that contributed to his father's death. Splendour Gems, formerly Beautiful Diamonds Ltd, had defaulted on loans worth ₹14.74 crore plus interest, with total dues amounting to over ₹65 crore by May 2025. Jagdishan, in his petition before the high court, has strongly denied the allegations and has termed the FIR 'motivated' and 'retaliatory,' arguing that it was filed soon after the bank resumed recovery actions against the Mehta family's firm. He further claimed that the allegations rely entirely on unverified 'Xerox copies of selective cash records,' with no supporting witnesses or corroborative evidence. The authenticity of the purported diary that allegedly documented these payments has also been challenged. The petition also contended that the May 29 magistrate's order directing registration of the FIR was 'self-contradictory and flawed,' and that the entire case was aimed at tarnishing his reputation and impeding the functioning of the bank. However, his efforts to secure a hearing before the Bombay High Court have been marred by repeated judicial recusals. At least five judges are believed to have recused themselves from hearing the case, leading to delays. On June 30, the high court refused to expedite the matter, rejecting the urgency plea and listing it for regular hearing on July 14. Besides the FIR against Jagdishan, a second complaint filed by the Trust also led to an FIR against Chetan Mehta and others for alleged embezzlement of ₹2.25 crore from the Trust's funds.

Kareena Kapoor Khan calls Saif Ali Khan ‘Iron Man' after stabbing incident; ‘That trauma will make Taimur and Jeh…'
In the early hours of January 16, Saif Ali Khan (54) and Kareena Kapoor Khan (44) experienced every parent's worst nightmare when they found an intruder in their younger son Jehangir Ali Khan (4) aka Jeh's room, at their Bandra (Mumbai) home. As a real life hero, Saif fought the robber but got stabbed multiple times in the spine while protecting his family. The actor was then rushed to the Lilavati Hospital by his son Taimur Ali Khan (8) and an auto driver. Months after the incident, Kareena has now, for the first time, talked about the attempted robbery and the trauma it left on her, Saif and their children. Jehangir, Kareena, Saif and Taimur at their house In a chat with Barkha Dutt, Kareena Kapoor Khan shared that she is still struggling and the family has not come to terms with the attack a 100% yet. She explained that these incidents of break ins are more common in the West, but we don't hear about it much in Mumbai. Bebo went on to share that she was anxious for the first couple of months, but the memory has been fading with time. The actor compared the attack to losing someone, explaining that the memory may fade but you never really get over it. However, Kareena stated that she does not want to live in that fear because it's wrong to put the stress on her children. Kareena shared, 'I'm just really happy and blessed, and thank god that we're safe and we're definitely stronger as a unit, because we've seen it. And I hope that my two boys will grow up being a different kind of resilient because they've kind of seen their father being attacked. My little one still says that 'but my father is Batman and Iron Man, he can take on anyone'. That's the way he looks at it. So the good thing is that in our eyes, definitely Saif is Iron Man because he did take that beating. So for us, that's it. I can just thank god that my children are safe and yeah, they've seen blood, they've seen everything, but that trauma I somehow feel will make Taimur and Jeh a lot more, a different kind of a man, is what I feel.' Bebo explained that her sons Taimur and Jeh have been sheltered all their life and this incident brought them out of their shelter into reality, that something like this can actually happen. The actor went on to share that this is her way of looking at what's coming out of this incident, like a silver lining. On the work front, Kareena completes 25 years in the Hindi film industry today.
