DAP shoring up unity, Indian support with CEC picks, says analyst
DAP leaders Lim Hui Ying and V Sivakumar, ousted at its March polls, have now been appointed to sit on the party's central executive committee. PETALING JAYA : DAP's decision to appoint Lim Hui Ying and V Sivakumar to its central executive committee (CEC) appears to be an effort to close ranks and boost Indian representation in the party, says an analyst. James Chin of the University of Tasmania said both appointments had been expected, explaining that Sivakumar's selection reflected a push for ethnic diversity within the party. 'Sivakumar was appointed because they want to increase the non-Chinese voices, especially Indian voices, so that's okay. 'He is also a long-term DAP grassroots leader. It's good that he's there to provide an Indian balance,' he told FMT. Chin said Lim's appointment signalled a mending of ties with the Lim family, following earlier criticism over their perceived dominance within the party. 'The party (appeared to) turn hard against the Lim family (during the CEC elections), so I think this is the party sending a signal they don't want to fight the Lim family. 'Hence, they allow two Lims to be in the CEC. It's very much a sort of a peace offering,' he said. Hui Ying's elder brother, former Penang chief minister Lim Guan Eng, was elected to the CEC at the polls. Akademi Nusantara's Azmi Hassan said Hui Ying's appointment may also be about allowing her to retain her position as deputy education minister. He said it would be hard to justify her place in Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim's Cabinet otherwise. 'So, just to justify her presence as deputy minister, she is appointed to the CEC,' he said. Azmi said Sivakumar's inclusion could raise questions, given that the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission had investigated the human resources ministry during his tenure as minister. 'The stigma of being investigated by MACC makes it difficult to justify Sivakumar's appointment' he said. In April 2023, Sivakumar rejected calls to resign or go on leave after MACC questioned him twice over alleged corruption in foreign worker recruitment. Three of his aides were remanded but later released. Sivakumar subsequently sacked five aides. Lim and Sivakumar were among the 10 appointed to the CEC earlier this week. Both contested during the CEC elections in March, but failed to secure enough votes. The others are Kelvin Yii, V Papparaidu, M Thulsi Thivani, Chen Kah Eng, Yeoh Soon Hin, Sheikh Umar Bagharib Ali, Yap Yee Vonne and Wu Him Ven.

Hui Ying, Sivakumar, Kelvin appointed to DAP leadership
Newly appointed DAP central executive committee members Lim Hui Ying, V Sivakumar, and Dr Kelvin Yii are also the MPs for Tanjong, Batu Gajah, and Bandar Kuching, respectively. PETALING JAYA : Deputy finance minister Lim Hui Ying has been appointed to the DAP central executive committee (CEC), party secretary-general Loke Siew Fook announced today. Loke said the Tanjong MP is among 10 DAP members who were appointed to the party's top leadership after a meeting of the CEC yesterday. The others who were appointed include former human resources minister V Sivakumar, Bandar Kuching MP Dr Kelvin Yii, Kota Kemuning assemblyman V Papparaidu, Buntong assemblyman M Thulsi Thivani, and Stulang assemblyman Chen Kah Eng. Penang Port Commission chairman Yeoh Soon Hin, ex-Paloh assemblyman Sheikh Umar Bagharib Ali, Kuala Lumpur DAP Youth chief Yap Yee Vonne, and former CEC member Wu Him Ven were also appointed to the committee. Loke said the CEC also agreed to appoint former Damansara MP Tony Pua as chairman of DAP's disciplinary committee. This gives Pua a role in the party's central leadership again after his failure to defend his spot in the CEC in 2022. He was not fielded as a candidate in the general election that year. The CEC also appointed Cheras MP Tan Kok Wai as the party's second adviser after Lim Guan Eng, and Chong Chieng Jen as DAP's parliamentary leader. Former deputy law minister Ramkarpal Singh meanwhile was made DAP's legal bureau chief. Loke said the CEC also agreed on its eight representatives in the Pakatan Harapan presidential council, namely himself, Guan Eng, Gobind Singh Deo, Nga Kor Ming, Chong, Syahredzan Johan, Teo Nie Ching, and Woo Kah Leong.

4.8 million Sara recipients use MyKad to buy essential items
GEORGE TOWN: A total of 4.8 million out of 5.4 million recipients of the Sumbangan Asas Rahmah (Sara) aid have used their MyKad to purchase basic necessities at registered shops nationwide as of this month. Deputy Finance Minister Lim Hui Ying said Perlis recorded the highest number of users at 94%, followed by 93% in Sabah and Kedah, while Penang recorded 88%. She said the figures reflect the growing effectiveness of the initiative due to various awareness and promotional efforts at both federal and state levels. The government has raised the amount of funds for both Sara and Rahmah Cash Aid (STR) schemes to RM13bil this year, the highest for cash aid programmes in Malaysia's history, Bernama reported Lim as saying. 'The ministry will continue to strengthen awareness campaigns to ensure more people benefit from this government aid, which is aimed at easing their financial burden. 'We have also significantly expanded the number of recipients from 700,000 to 5.4 million since April,' she told reporters during a Sara outreach programme at a hypermarket here yesterday. At the event, Lim met with 100 Sara recipients in Penang as part of the ministry's effort to engage directly with urban communities. She said to date, 3,700 retail premises have registered under the programme nationwide, enabling recipients to shop closer to home. In Penang alone, 190 outlets are part of the programme. Since May 1, the programme was enhanced by expanding the list of eligible items to 14 categories, including household and personal hygiene products, medicines and school supplies like uniforms and shoes. The maximum amount of aid for 2025 was raised to RM2,100 from RM1,200, a 75% increase, Lim added.
