Democrats to Protest Trump's Takeover of Kennedy Center With Pride Event
Five Democratic senators have rented a small theater at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts and invited the producer of 'Hamilton' to stage a gay pride concert there as a form of symbolic protest against President Trump's takeover of the institution. The event, scheduled to take place on Monday night before an invited audience, will feature Broadway artists performing songs and readings. The concert, hosted by Senator John Hickenlooper of Colorado, is being called 'Love Is Love,' a slogan used by the gay rights movement and quoted by the 'Hamilton' creator Lin-Manuel Miranda when his show won at the Tony Awards in 2016. 'What's happening in the world is deeply concerning, but even in our darkest hours, we must continue to seek out the light,' Mr. Hickenlooper said in a statement. 'The L.G.B.T.Q. community has long embodied this resilience, maintaining joy and creativity in the face of adversity.' Mr. Trump took over the Kennedy Center in February after purging its previously bipartisan board of Democratic appointees and replacing them with his allies. He denounced its programming as too 'wokey' and promised to usher in a 'Golden Age in Arts and Culture.' The senators, who exercised a prerogative extended to members of Congress to rent space in the center, chose this week for the event because June has long been when supporters of the gay community have celebrated Pride Month. Mr. Trump, in a departure from previous presidents, has not acknowledged Pride Month, and some of his actions in recent months have prompted concern in the L.G.B.T.Q. community. Anthony Ramos calls out Madonna for being on iPad 'the whole time' during one of his 'Hamilton' performances
Anthony Ramos did not throw away his shot. The 33-year-old former Hamilton star recently recalled Madonna giving him quite the fright when he spotted her in the audience during one of his performances of the acclaimed show on stage. "The most terrifying was Madonna with her iPad in her face," Ramos said during his Thursday appearance on Watch What Happens Live while host Andy Cohen peppered him with a string of "scary questions." "She was like this the whole time," Ramos continued, mimicking someone staring down at an iPad. "I'm like, 'Damn, shorty, if you're not enjoying it that much, the door's right there. You ain't gotta stay here.'" Ramos was part of the original cast of Lin-Manuel Miranda's Tony-winning Broadway musical, playing the dual roles of John Laurens and Philip Hamilton from July 2015 until November 2016. After leaving Hamilton, Ramos took on the lead role in the film adaptation of In the Heights, Miranda's breakout 2008 Broadway hit, which also earned widespread critical praise. Ramos continued building his career, nabbing a starring turn in 2023's Transformers: Rise of the Beasts, 2024's Twisters, and several other TV and movie projects. The original Broadway cast of Hamilton reunited on June 8 during the 78th Annual Tony Awards to celebrate the musical's 10th anniversary. Since its Broadway debut in 2015, the show, inspired by the life of Founding Father Alexander Hamilton, has become a cultural phenomenon, shattering box office records and earning a record-breaking 16 Tony nominations and winning 11 trophies, including Best Musical. Ramos did not say when Madonna attended the Hamilton performance. However, in 2015, Playbill reported that creator and star Miranda banned Madonna from visiting the cast backstage after an April 18 performance of the show when it was still Off Broadway due to her poor theater etiquette. In a now-deleted tweet, the Pulitzer Prize–winning lyricist wrote, "Tonight was the first time I asked stage management NOT to allow a celebrity (who was texting all through Act 2) backstage. #noselfieforyou." Anthony Ramos says he once caught Madonna distracted on her iPad throughout the 'whole' production of Hamilton. The Broadway star, 33, originated the lead roles of John Laurens and Philip Hamilton in Lin-Manuel Miranda's Tony-winning musical in 2015. On Thursday's episode of Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen, Ramos was asked who the 'most terrifying celebrity [was] to spot in the audience' during his 15-month run. After taking a brief moment to think, he named Madonna, who he said had an 'iPad in her face.' 'She was like this the whole time,' he recalled, mimicking the pop icon looking down at an iPad in her lap. 'I was like, 'Damn, shawty. If you're not enjoying it that much, you know the door's right there. You ain't gotta stay here!'' Ramos laughed. The Independent has contacted Madonna's representative for comment. Ramos, who rose to fame with his dual portrayal of Laurens and Hamilton on Broadway, recently reunited with his former Hamilton castmates, including Daveed Diggs, Renée Elise Goldsberry, Jonathan Groff, Christopher Jackson, Jasmine Cephas Jones, Leslie Odom, Jr., Okieriete Onaodowan, and Phillipa Soo, at the 2025 Tony Awards. In celebration of the hit musical's tenth anniversary, they performed a medley of songs from the soundtrack, including 'Non-Stop,' 'My Shot,' 'History Has Its Eyes on You,' and 'The Room Where It Happens.' Ramos wasn't given a main part in the performance, leading to confusion among viewers. Hamilton, which opened on Broadway in 2015, received a record-breaking 16 nominations at the 70th Tony Awards and ultimately won 11 awards, including Best Musical. Following his time on Hamilton, Ramos went on to lead Miranda's 2021 film adaptation of his other hit musical, In the Heights. The singer and actor has since continued releasing his own music and starring in movies like 2024's Twisters and Spike Lee's newest crime-thriller, Highest 2 Lowest. According to IMDb, Ramos will star in six upcoming projects, including thriller-drama House of Dynamite, out October 24, as well as the big-screen adaptation of popular children's series Bob the Builder. He will portray the titular Bob in the Jennifer Lopez-produced movie.

'The most terrifying was Madonna with her iPad in her face. She was like this the whole time,' he said, pretending to look down at an iPad. 'I was like, 'Damn, shawty. If you're not enjoying it that much, you know the door's right there. You ain't gotta stay here!'' Ramos was famously part of the original cast of Hamilton, which made its Broadway debut in 2015. The actor, whose work on the musical earned him the 2016 Grammy for Best Musical Theatre Album, originated the roles of John Laurens and Philip Hamilton. To celebrate the 10th anniversary of Lin-Manuel Miranda's musical, the entire cast reunited at the 2025 Tony Awards to perform a medley of iconic songs from the play. However, fans were upset that Ramos did not have a solo in the performance. 'That was really nice that people got pissed,' he said on Watch What Happens Lives. But according to the actor, his solo moments were cut because he didn't confirm his attendance until the day before the awards show. 'They weren't even planning on me being there,' he explained. 'They cut that part, they choreographed the whole number and then I texted Lin Saturday morning like, 'Yo, is it too late to join y'all?' He was like, 'Are you serious?' I was like, 'Yeah, I'm serious.' He was like, 'You got a black suit?' I was like, 'Nah, I could get one.'' 'So, they fit me in where I could fit in,' Ramos continued. 'There was a moment for me but they had to take it out because they didn't plan on me being there.'
