Ex-MLA Lingaiah labelled as a disturber of peace
Nakrekal (Nalgonda): Tension prevailed near Nakrekal Police Station in Nalgonda district as a large group of women staged a protest demanding the arrest of former MLA Chirumarthi Lingaiah and BRS state leader Cheruku Sudhakar. The protest was triggered following the arrest of a BRS social media activist Nagendra Babu by the police on Friday. In response, former MLA Lingaiah visited the police station and allegedly lashed out at Circle Inspector Rajashekar. The women alleged that Babu was posting false and misleading content on social media. They claimed that instead of supporting police action, former MLA Lingaiah was spreading baseless allegations and blaming the Congress party, which they condemned as inappropriate. The women further accused BRS leaders of creating unrest in peaceful villages. Holding placards and raising slogans, the women demanded the immediate arrest of both Chirumarthi Lingaiah for making false allegations, and Cheruku Sudhakar for his alleged involvement in inciting disturbances. Later, the protestors submitted a formal representation to the CI. The demonstration saw significant participation from local women, asserting their stand against misinformation and political provocation. It may be mentioned here that the former Nakrekal MLA Lingaiah, on Friday, had alleged that police were acting like Congress agents and targeting BRS activists for questioning on social media. He had condemned the arrest of BRS worker Nagendra Babu from Mangalapally village, who posted a comment in a local WhatsApp group that went viral. Earlier this week, Lingaiah also alleged harassment by officials backed by the ruling party. He alleged that despite making 26 phone calls to the District Collector regarding an issue, there was no response, which forced him to approach the Grievance Day programme on Monday where, after a lengthy argument with the Collector, he submitted his complaint. He further alleged that former Nakrekal Market Committee Chairman Koppula Pradeep Reddy and former Chinnakaparthy Sarpanch Boya Vanishreen's representations were being ignored deliberately. He claimed officials were submitting false reports under pressure from the ruling party and MLA as part of a political conspiracy against Pradeep Reddy.

Nalgonda: Former Nakrekal MLA Chirumarthi Lingaiah has alleged that officials in the constituency are harassing BRS leaders by submitting false reports, backed by the ruling party leaders. He said that despite making 26 phone calls to the District Collector regarding the issue, there was no response, which forced him to approach the Grievance Day programme. On Monday, during the prajavani, Lingaiah, along with party workers, submitted petitions to the Collector. Speaking to the media afterward at the Collectorate, he expressed disappointment over the Collector's failure to respond to phone calls regarding public issues. He further alleged that former Nakrekal Market Committee Chairman Koppula Pradeep Reddy and former Chinnakaparthy Sarpanch Boya Vanishreen's representations were being ignored deliberately. He claimed officials were submitting false reports under pressure from the ruling party and MLA as part of a political conspiracy against Pradeep Reddy. He also mentioned that the Panchayat Secretary of Ketepally was suspended based on these false reports. He criticised the officials for working at the behest of ruling party leaders and said that even after multiple petitions in Grievance Day meetings, no action has been taken on constituency issues. The former MLA accused the authorities of demolishing buildings on farmland belonging to the former Chinnakaparthy Sarpanch and alleged that ministers are not paying attention to the people's suffering. Lingaiah concluded by claiming that officials are acting like Congress agents and that houses under the Indiramma Housing Scheme are being given only to Congress leaders in the villages.

Telangana village on 'suicide watch' saves 300 lives in 3 years
HYDERABAD: Residents of Yamcha, a hamlet on banks of the Godavari in Telangana's Nizamabad - around 200km from Hyderabad - have prevented over 300 potential suicides in the past three years. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The village, home to 1,700-odd people, keeps a wary eye on the nearby Basara bridge for anyone attempting suicide by jumping into the river. The watch intensifies when monsoon arrives and the river is in spate, making it an infamous "suicide hotspot". It helps that most of the villagers are natural swimmers adept at navigating the strong current. "Last year, we rescued a father and his two sons after they leapt into the waters from the bridge," recalled Lingaiah. "On another occasion, a woman's clothing got caught in an iron rod jutting out of the bridge, leaving her dangling. Some fisherfolk nearby heard her cries for help and rescued her." Most of those rescued by the villagers blame debt and family disputes for their acts of desperation. "It is particularly distressing to see bodies floating in the river, as some choose to jump off the bridge at night when we are not keeping watch," said Mahipal, who has rescued around 20 people to date. Fellow villager P Vinod recounted instances of people informing their families about their intention to die by suicide. "Invariably, family members contact police and details, including photos, are immediately shared on a WhatsApp group," he said. Once police receive a report, they alert the villagers and a search begins immediately. Locals say many of those who attempt suicide later express gratitude for being saved. In one instance, a woman from Maharashtra invited her rescuers from Yamcha to her wedding. An elderly person who was prevented from taking his life over a family dispute reconciled with his relatives. "He now lives happily with his family and recently invited those who saved him for lunch," a villager added.

Mangaluru: A green initiative to mark World Environment Day 2025, Nitte (Deemed to be University) wasinaugurated a Miyawaki forest on its campus, reaffirming its commitment to environmental sustainability and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The forest was formally launched on June 5 by Dr. Pratap Lingaiah, State NSS Officer, Youth Empowerment and Sports Department, Government of Karnataka. Dr. Lingaiah unveiled the commemorative plaque and planted a sapling to mark the occasion. Senior officials of Nitte University, including Vice-Chancellor Dr. M.S. Moodithaya, Registrar Dr. Harsha Halahalli, Deputy Registrar and Chief Coordinator of the SDG Cell Prof. (Dr.) Suma Ballal, NSS Coordinator Mr. Shashikumar Shetty, and SDG Cell Member Secretary Dr. Vinayaka B. Shet, were present at the event. The plantation drive was jointly organised by the university's Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) Cell and the National Service Scheme (NSS) unit. Spread across 6,534 sq. ft within the university premises, the Nitte Miyawaki Forest features native species such as neem, kadamba, mango, golden shower, Ashoka, kokum, jackfruit, red sandalwood, and cinnamon. The Miyawaki method, pioneered by Japanese botanist Dr. Akira Miyawaki, is known for promoting dense, fast-growing forests using indigenous species that achieve self-sustainability within just two to three years. This initiative is part of the university's broader green mission, which has gained international recognition. Nitte University was ranked in the 301–400 band globally in the Times Higher Education Impact Rankings for its progress on the SDGs, and secured the 252nd position worldwide in the 2024 UI GreenMetric World University Rankings. The university's adoption of the Miyawaki model underscores its proactive approach to ecological restoration and public awareness, aligning with this year's global theme of 'Ecosystem Restoration.'
