Lionel Messi, arguably the most recognizable player in the Club World Cup, is steering viewership to his underdog team. Messi and his Inter Miami teammates are helping the expanded tournament draw U.S. television ratings that are roughly comparable to those of the Premier League in the recently concluded season. Club World Cup broadcasts in English on TNT Sports (TNT, TBS and truTV) were averaging 360,000 through Wednesday, per Sports Media Watch. Sports Business Journal noted that the highly popular Premier League drew 394,000 per match on USA Network in the 2024-25 season. Only a small number of Club World Cup are carried by TNT Sports, with all matches available on DAZN. Three of the top seven English-language telecasts on TNT Sports featured Inter Miami, led by 676,000 tuning in to see the Major League Soccer side draw 2-2 with Brazil's Palmeiras on Monday. The Miami matches attracted even larger viewership on Spanish-language broadcasts. Inter Miami drew 0-0 with Egypt's Al Ahly (371,000 viewers), then earned an upset 2-1 win over Portugal's Porto (349,000) before the tie with Palmeiras. Those results allowed Messi & Co. to finish second in Group A, setting up a Round of 16 matchup with Paris Saint-Germain that should be a rating bonanza. The Sunday contest in Atlanta pits Messi against the team he represented immediately before coming to Miami. And PSG are the newly crowned winners of the UEFA Champions League, the most prestigious continental club tournament. According to Sports Media Watch, the CONCACAF Gold Cup matchup on Sunday between the U.S. men's national team and Haiti attracted an audience of 1.2 million viewers on Fox. With age, 57kg becomes troublesome: Ravi Dahiya on why he's moving to a higher weight category
New Delhi [India], June 27 (ANI): In the latest episode of the House of Glory podcast, an initiative by the Gagan Narang Sports Foundation, Tokyo Olympics silver medallist Ravi Kumar Dahiya opened up about his sporting journey and future plans in wrestling. One of the key takeaways from the conversation was his decision to move up to a higher weight category and the reasons behind it. 'I won't be continuing in the 57kg weight category as, with age, it becomes a very troublesome weight, and I thus have decided to go higher up in my weight,' Ravi said in the latest episode of the House of Glory podcast. While the next Olympic weight category for the LA Olympics 2028 is 65kg, 28-year-old Ravi has been in and out of competitions in the past few years due to injuries and has been competing in the non-Olympic 61kg weight category. In the podcast, Ravi also spoke about his early days of wrestling, his father's sacrifices, and his admiration for Argentinian footballer Lionel Messi. Crediting his father for introducing him to wrestling, Ravi recounted his journey from a small mud akhara to becoming an Olympic medallist. 'It was my father who was very fond of wrestling in my family. There used to be a small mud akhara near the fields where he used to do farming, and I used to go and play there when I was really young. It was there that I started wrestling, and initially, it was just for fun, without any intention of taking it up as a profession. My father was really fond of it, and it was only because of him that I got into this game today,' Ravi said. He then went on to talk about his father's dedication and added, 'Compared to my parents' sacrifice, I have sacrificed nothing in my life. Our village is 30-35 km away from Chhatrasal Stadium, which is around 70-75 km both ways. My father has been coming here daily in the morning with our dietary needs and still continues to do so today. Coming for one or two days is different, but he has been continuously coming here for nearly 20 years now (since 2007), whether it's sunny or raining heavily, and that is dedication and sacrifice that motivated me to win international medals.' The podcast also touched on Ravi's relationship with Aman Sehrawat, saying, 'In any sport, people might be rivals on the mat, but outside, we are all humans, and it has always been like that. Aman is like a brother to me, and that's always been the case.' Ravi ended the podcast on a lighter note, sharing his admiration for footballer Lionel Messi and enjoying his free time with friends. Supercomputer predicts Club World Cup winner - with Chelsea's chances rated HIGHER than Real Madrid... but what about Man City?
PSG have been tipped to add to their Champions League glory by winning the newly revamped Club World Cup, according to Opta's supercomputer. The group stages of the controversial competition wrapped up on Thursday night, as Real Madrid swept aside Red Bull Salzburg, and now the round of 16 fixtures are locked in. The Premier League 's two representatives, Manchester City and Chelsea, have both made it through to the knockout stages, with Pep Guardiola 's side standing out in particular with a 100 per cent record. They will be joined by Real Madrid, Inter Milan, Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund, Benfica, and Juventus, as European giants predominantly dominate the competition. Brazil's top flight also have a strong presence as Botafogo, Palmeiras, Fluminese, and Flamengo have also breezed into the last 16, while Al-Hilal, Monterrey, and Inter Miami have progressed. However, despite the strength of teams left in the Club World Cup, it is Luis Enrique's serial winners who have been given 20.6 per cent chance of bringing the inaugural trophy back to Paris. The European champions will first have to get past Inter Miami, led by their former star Lionel Messi, in the round of 16, with the two sides doing battle at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta on Sunday. If they get past Messi's men, then PSG will be put up against Bayern Munich or Flamengo on what is the more stacked side of the knockout stage bracket. The French champions are only marginally the favoruites, with Manchester City given a 20.4 per cent chance of taking home the crown after what an impressive group stage campaign. Pep Guardiola's men were back to their brilliant best against Juventus, putting in a sizzling display that has not been seen by the boys in blue for quite some time, beating the Italian giants 5-2 in Orlando, Florida, on Thursday. It was a display that has seen them become one of the front-runners to win the competition as they seek their first trophy of what had been a dismal 2024-25 campaign by their standards. Champions League finalists Inter Milan - who were embarrassed by PSG in Munich last month - are the third favourites to lift the Club World Cup with a 12.4 per cent chance of doing so. They are followed by Bayern Munich who have an 11.3 per cent likelihood of glory, while Chelsea sit behind them at 10.4 per cent. The five-time record winners of the old Club World Cup format, Real Madrid, have a 9.7 per cent chance of claiming their first trophy under Xabi Alonso, after failing to strike gold in the regular season. Borussia Dortmund, Benfica, and Juventus then follow as European sides occupy the top nine spots on the list, while Palmeiras are the best of the rest, although they have only been given a 0.9 per cent chance of winning the competition. Flamengo, Al-Hilal, Botafogo, Inter Miami, Monterrey, and Fluminese have all been given 0.5 per cent, or less, of winning the tournament. The last 16 ties take place between the 28 June and 2 July, while the final is set for Sunday 13 July.
