Ram Kapoor says 'Television is a dog's life' and reveals surviving on wife Gautami's income after marriage
Ram Kapoor is one of the successful actors in the entertainment industry. In a recent interview, he discussed the earnings of television actors, emphasized the importance of making wise investments, and commented on the wealth and achievements of his friends, Sakshi Tanwar and Ronit Roy. He shared his own experience, stating that he has lived his life well while also making smart investments. Ram Kapoor opens up on his journey In a recent interview with Humans of Bombay, Ram Kapoor mentioned that if television actors invest wisely, they will have enough money for everything they need. Ram pointed out that many actors achieve success but fail to invest their earnings appropriately. Kapoor added, "When you make it to the top like Ronit Roy, Sakshi, and me, and you are sensible, then you have made enough for your three-four generations. I know Ronit and Sakshi have done this, and they are set for four generations." Giving his example, the actor said, "For 15–20 years, I made a salary cheque of a ridiculously high amount." He quoted, "Television is a dog's life; if you make it, then it's fine." Ram recalled starting work from the bottom on Television and living on his wife Gautami Kapoor's income. He said, "One year after my wedding, I had to live on Gautami's income because I had no work. That nobody remembers. Gautami was doing Lipstick at that time. I was doing nothing. When I started, I started at Rs 1,500 per day at Doordarshan." Ram Kapoor talks about Ronit Roy and Sakshi Tanwar Ram Kapoor spoke about Ronit Roy's achievements and said, "Ronit has a lot of houses, vacation homes. He has such a fantastic villa in Goa. He has been very sensible." He elaborated on Ronit's journey in the industry, referring to him as a "senior." The Bade Achhe Lagte Hain actor continued, "He started in films. He didn't make it in films. He was a flop in films. He didn't have money to eat, till Ektaa took him on in Television, he never looked back. But he has seen failure, so when he got success, from day 1, he respected it. So I looked at Ronit and I learned a little bit from Ronit. His investments have always been correct." Ram revealed that he and Ronit have known each other for 25 years and mentioned that Ronit has been wise with his money. Ram then gave an example of Sakshi Tanwar and said, "Sakshi is a very sensible girl. She doesn't have the habit of fancy cars like I do. Something that stands out as something different to my natural lip colour but doesn't need too much upkeep throughout the day (nor something that melts off in the heat). And after trying out Clinique's newest Almost Lipstick launch, Nude Honey, I think I've found the perfect summer lip product. Now, I will admit, I have never really been one for nude lipstick, I tend to favour a bold red when my skin is behaving (hello Charlotte Tilbury Hollywood Vixen) in an attempt to enhance and brighten my usually quite pale complexion. On the days when I want something a little less va-va-voom, I opt for a lip balm to give my lips some much-needed nourishment. And they were well and truly met. Firstly, the formula is silky smooth and is both shiny and creamy. It feels super nourishing and hydrating on the lips and best of all doesn't leave their dry bits with a bit of a crispy cast that my trusty lip balm hasn't quite managed to eliminate (something red lipstick tends to accentuate). Shop it here £25.00 Clinique Buy Now on Clinique Product Description Clinique's new Almost Lipstick shade Nude Honey Priced at £25 the product - which is described as somewhere between a lipstick and a lip gloss - claims to be buildable and is available at both Clinique and Boots. Of course, if £25 is a little steep, there are a number of tinted lip balms out there that'll help do the trick, for example Lanolip's pink Tinted SPF30 balm at £8.99 or KIKO Milano Coloured Lip Balm, £6.99. On first application, the colour is quite sheer and doesn't change the lip colour drastically but instead gives it depth. To add to its colour, let the lippy settle for a few minutes and then add to it - this should then create a deeper hue that is warm with brown undertones but it's too warm to wash me out. Although I will say the brand says that the colour of the lippy looks different on each wearer but is the ideal blend of warm and cool pigment. The emollient-rich formula leaves my lips looking subtly glossy - but not overly so - and without the stickiness a lip gloss delivers; a detail I love when it comes to lipsticks as it means I don't get strands of hair attached to my lips should a gust of wind blow my way. Its long and slender casing makes it convenient to carry in my handbag too as it's lightweight and slim. Plus, being relatively small - in comparison to more chunky lipstick shapes - the packaging offers elite precision during application. Now, having worn it a number of times to different occasions, one constant I noticed was that it doesn't last all day. After a few hours, I needed to reapply the product - although it wasn't too much of a bother and is typically the case with lipsticks anyway. It also may require a bit of lip liner too as I found that it bled out over my natural lip line, which needed touching up in the mirror. Article continues below I also loved that it didn't have a scent - not chemically nor sweet and sickly. While I've not yet experimented with it over or under any other lip colours, as suggested by the website, I do enjoy the boost it gives my lips when worn alone and will definitely be incorporating it into my daily beauty regimen. How the cost of the 1971 Eurovision nearly sank RTÉ
Analysis: The station's decision to film the 1971 Eurovision in colour led to programme cutbacks and cancellations By Morgan Wait, TCD I've heard the line 'sure, we can't send anyone good to the Eurovision, we can't afford to win!' at least 1,000 times since I moved to Ireland. This has been used to explain both Jedward and Dustin the Turkey to me. As Jedward have proven themselves to be adept advocates for social justice in recent years, and "Lipstick", to be fair, should have won, I don't need much more explanation there. I do, however, still have some questions about Dustin... As we ramp up for the contest this year, and weigh Ireland's prospects against the other entries, I've been thinking a lot about the old joke. As a television historian, I have been thinking a lot too about the time when the cost of the Eurovision nearly did sink RTÉ. The year was 1971. Dana's "All Kinds of Everything" had won the 1970 contest and RTÉ was readying itself to hold the following year's contest in Dublin. Dana's song was Ireland's first winner in the contest's then 14 year history. She thus became the pride of the nation for whom nothing was too extravagant. Aer Lingus even procured a special dispensation from the British government for her to fly into Ballykelly airfield on a private 747 so that she could make it home to her native Derry the night after her win. From RTÉ Archives, Dana returns to Ireland after winning the 1970 Eurovision As the Irish victory was a very big deal, RTÉ was dead set on holding a contest that would adequately represent Ireland. The only issue was that RTÉ's budget was not as large as that of previous contest winners. The station was already struggling financially due to falling advertising revenue, increased radio hours and increased payroll expenses. In order to hold a successful contest, RTÉ needed to make cuts elsewhere and this did not amount simply to cutting a few corners. It meant that the station spent a huge proportion of its yearly budget on the contest to the tune of £250,000. A full £200,000 of that expenditure went towards acquiring colour broadcasting equipment a year earlier than the station had planned so that they could film the Eurovision in colour. Irish viewers were late adopters of colour television as the new sets were more expensive. In 1971, only about 1% of Irish viewers had colour sets, but the take-up was much higher in the rest of Europe so RTÉ felt obligated to take on the excessive cost of filming the contest in colour. From RTÉ Archives, RTÉ News reports on preparations at Dublin's Gaiety Theatre ahead of the 1971 Eurovision, the first time the competition was held in Ireland The cost of the contest led to cuts in nearly every department and a cavalcade of programme cancellations. Big budget expenditures like soap operas were the first to go. The station left their long running rural soap The Riordans in place, but the short lived Southside, set in a Cork suburb, was cancelled after its second season despite being at the top of the ratings throughout its run. The station also cancelled a programme called The 70s Scene, a women's programme featuring celebrity chef Monica Sheridan. In the previous eight years of its existence, RTÉ had always carried an Irish women's show of some sort, but they replaced this with the much cheaper import The Galloping Gourmet for 1971. RTÉ had always relied quite heavily on imported programmes, with about 50% of programming imported throughout the 1960s, but the Eurovision crisis exacerbated the problem. Between 1969 and 1971 native content dropped by 6%. By 1973 the situation had become so severe that one UNESCO study stated "only Iceland depended more on television imports than Ireland" in western Europe. The situation incensed workers at RTÉ who felt that the station had prioritised the contest over quality programming and jobs. In response, members of the station's 'Anti-Redundancy Committee' descended on the Gaiety Theatre where the Eurovision contest was being held to picket the proceedings. While there, they booed at and jeered delegates as they entered the theatre and 'heckled' members of the RTÉ Authority. In a statement to the press the following day, they openly attacked RTÉ for their participation in what they called the "vulgarity of that musical non-event". They pointed out that the choice to air the contest in colour resulted in a situation where '1,500 employees are now equipped to broadcast colour to exactly twice their number ... But no money remains for home-produced programmes in colour or in black and white'. The picketers, including a young Eoghan Harris, were swiftly suspended from their jobs for 'unprofessional conduct'. 1971 Eurovision winner Séverine performs "Un banc, un arbre, une rue" Quick action by RTÉ's unions and the threat of a strike resulted in the reinstatement of the picketers about two weeks later. But the budget crisis, and reliance on imported programming, continued on for much of the 1970s. However, the nation's efforts and the Irish station's worsening financial situation may have been worth it after all. The Eurovision Contest of 1971 was declared a resounding success. One RTÉ employee who traveled to Germany soon after the contest reported that impressions there, on the whole, could be summed up to the effect that 'Ireland is a place where the Protestants and Catholics stopped fighting long enough to put out a very successful Eurovision Song Contest.'
