TAWAU: Armed forces personnel must refrain from uploading sensitive content on social media, particularly those related to security assets, to prevent hostile parties from identifying the nation's defence capabilities, says Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin (pic). The Defence Minister said armed forces commanders should issue firm instructions to their personnel to use social media responsibly and avoid compromising national security. 'Sometimes, in their eagerness to showcase training or equipment, personnel may unintentionally reveal where such assets are stored. This could expose our strengths to those with ill intent,' he told reporters after an event here, Bernama reported. The minister was responding to a reminder issued by His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia, who cautioned military personnel against sharing everything on social media, particularly sensitive information related to troop movements and operations. His Majesty, when officiating the commissioning parade of the Malaysian Armed Forces (ATM) cadet officers on Saturday, decreed for military personnel to be cautious and refrain from disclosing unnecessary information to the public. Meanwhile, Mohamed Khaled said his ministry will continue to acquire strategic assets annually to strengthen national security. These are not off-the-shelf purchases, he stressed, but custom orders tailored to the armed forces' operational needs across land, air and sea to ensure suitability and effective deployment. 'We have already procured 18 FA-50 aircraft from South Korea and three Littoral Mission Ships. The construction of the Littoral Combat Ships are underway, alongside radar purchases to bolster national defence,' he said. He said the ministry is also in the process of replacing the static Tun Sharifah Rodziah forward operating base with a more modern and mobile base, better suited to current operational demands. Commenting on ongoing global conflicts, including in Ukraine, Gaza, Iran-Israel and India-Pakistan, Mohamed Khaled said these developments highlight the importance of Malaysia prioritising the acquisition of technology- driven defence assets. 'We are also aware of ongoing tensions in the South China Sea, which remain a serious concern. 'The government is committed to ensuring balanced defence preparedness between Sabah, Sarawak and Peninsular Malaysia,' he added.

Defence minister warns troops on sharing sensitive military content online

TAWAU: Defence Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin has issued a stern reminder to Malaysian Armed Forces (MAF) personnel to avoid sharing sensitive security-related content on social media. The warning comes amid concerns that such posts could expose defence assets to hostile parties. Speaking at the Tawau 2025 Civil-Military Cooperation Carnival today, Mohamed Khaled emphasised the need for responsible social media use among military personnel. He noted that even well-intentioned posts about training or equipment could inadvertently reveal strategic locations. The minister's remarks follow a similar caution issued by His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia, who recently advised troops against disclosing operational details online. On defence procurement, Mohamed Khaled confirmed ongoing efforts to modernise MAF assets. These include the acquisition of 18 FA-50 fighter jets from South Korea, three Littoral Mission Ships, and the construction of Littoral Combat Ships. Radar systems are also being upgraded to enhance national security. He added that the Tun Sharifah Rodziah forward operating base will be replaced with a more advanced mobile facility by next year. Addressing global conflicts, the minister highlighted the need for Malaysia to invest in technology-driven defence systems, particularly given tensions in the South China Sea. He assured balanced defence readiness across Sabah, Sarawak, and Peninsular Malaysia.

Defence Minister Reminds Troops Not To Share Sensitive Content On Social Media

TAWAU, June 29 (Bernama) -- Members of the Malaysian Armed Forces (MAF) have been reminded to refrain from uploading sensitive content on social media, particularly related to security assets, to prevent hostile parties from identifying the nation's defence capabilities. Defence Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin said he was confident that armed forces commanders would issue firm instructions to their personnel to use social media responsibly and avoid compromising national security. "Sometimes in their eagerness to showcase training or equipment, personnel may unintentionally reveal where such assets are stored. 'This could expose our strengths to those with ill intent," he told reporters after officiating the Tawau 2025 Civil-Military Cooperation (CIMIC) Carnival at the Tawau Sports Complex today. Mohamed Khaled was responding to a reminder issued yesterday by His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia, who cautioned military personnel against sharing everything on social media, particularly sensitive information related to troop movements and operations. Meanwhile, he said the Defence Ministry continues to acquire strategic assets annually to strengthen national security. These are not off-the-shelf purchases, he stressed, but custom orders tailored to the MAF's operational needs across land, air and sea to ensure suitability and effective deployment. 'We have already procured 18 FA-50 aircraft from South Korea, three Littoral Mission Ships and are continuing construction of the Littoral Combat Ships, alongside radar purchases to bolster national defence,' he said. Mohamed Khaled added that the ministry is also in the process of replacing the static Tun Sharifah Rodziah forward operating base with a more modern and mobile base better suited to current operational demands, expected to be completed next year.

Khaled assures military readiness with new assets, tech

TAWAU: The Defence Ministry is committed to ensuring the Malaysian Armed Forces (MAF) maintains the highest level of preparedness through the acquisition of strategic assets and the latest defence technology. Defence Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin said the acquisition of new defence assets and systems is carried out continuously to meet the Malaysian Army, Royal Malaysian Navy, and Royal Malaysian Air Force's needs. "So far, we have purchased 18 F-50 aircraft, including from Korea, three Littoral Mission Ships (LMS), and we are continuing the construction of Littoral Combat Ships (LCS), in addition to purchasing radar to strengthen national defence. "We are also in the process of building a new forward operating base to replace the existing Tun Sharifah Rodziah Base with a more modern and efficient mobile base, which is more suitable for current operational needs," he said. Khaled said this was in line with His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia's call for MAF to be equipped with the latest defence technology. He was speaking on the sidelines of the Tawau CIMIC Carnival 2025, organised by the ministry and MAF, here today. Khaled also said that the government plans to acquire coastal radars to strengthen Sabah's maritime security. "The uncertainty in the South China Sea requires us to be more serious in terms of preparedness and military strength. "At the same time, the commitment to Sabah's security is never taken lightly, as we want to achieve a balance between Peninsular Malaysia, Sabah, and Sarawak," he said. Khaled also reminded MAF personnel to avoid uploading content on social media that could expose the location of strategic national assets. "Sometimes, personnel upload pictures of training or military equipment, including weapon storage locations. "This is very dangerous as it can provide information to parties with ill intentions towards the country."

Perak PMR 2025: APM's Sealegs Boat Ride Offers Unique Experience At Lumut Waterfront

LUMUT, June 13 (Bernama) -- Set against the scenic backdrop of the sea, the Malaysian Civil Defence Force (APM) is offering a unique and interactive experience to visitors of the Perak MADANI Rakyat Programme (PMR) 2025 at the Lumut Waterfront. Departing from the usual static displays, this edition of PMR gives the public a chance to ride in APM's Sealegs amphibious boat - a high-tech New Zealand-made asset capable of operating on both land and water. Bagan Datuk District APM Officer Capt (PA) Mohd Fazly Mohamad Zawawi said visitors only need to take part in a quiz at the APM booth to receive a coupon for the boat ride. 'We're offering visitors the chance to board the boat from the Lumut public jetty, cruise along the Lumut Waterfront and return to the jetty,' he told Bernama. Apart from the ride, visitors will also be briefed on the functions of the 7.1-metre tactical vehicle, which was specially mobilised from the Perak APM's disaster asset fleet. Mohd Fazly said the Perak APM currently maintains two units of the Sealegs boat, which are mobilised during disasters such as floods. The boats have previously been sent to the East Coast and Johor to assist in flood relief operations. Bernama journalists had the opportunity to take a 20-minute ride on the vessel, cruising along the Lumut Waterfront and catching a glimpse of Royal Malaysian Navy combat vessels and Littoral Combat Ships anchored nearby. Visitors can also try out rescue tools such as the power cutter, used to slice through concrete and metal during actual emergency operations. 'A total of 90 APM personnel are involved in this programme, including members of the Rapid Response Team (PASPA) from our headquarters. We've also brought in the Alpha Band from Bangi to perform busker-style entertainment,' he added.
