More than 200 canoeists and kayakers packed the Rideau Canal Saturday for Parks Canada's 'Lock & Paddle' event. CTV's Camille Wilson has a recap.

Paddlers to fill Rideau Canal locks with colour
Dozens of kayaks and canoes take part in the 2nd Lock & Paddle event on the Rideau Canal on Saturday, July 19, 2025. (Camille Wilson/CTV News Ottawa) Parks Canada's Lock & Paddle event is back after its success last year. Kayakers and canoers are invited to paddle on the Rideau Canal from the Hartwells Lockstation Saturday at 2 p.m. The paddlers will create a flash mob of colourful boats to celebrate the historic Rideau Canal and experience the UNESCO World Heritage Site from the water. This event is open to all levels of experience and welcomes the whole family to join in. (Camille Wilson/CTV News Ottawa) If you don't have a canoe or kayak, local rental options are available through Escape Tourism, Dow's Lake Pavilion, Ottawa Canoe Outfitters, and Ottawa Valley Canoe and Kayak. A few details to keep in mind: No registration is required for Lock & Paddle Stand-up paddleboards, inflatable vessels and pets are not permitted Safety gear required: PFDs, sound signaling device, heaving line, bailer, watertight flashlight Parking will not be available onsite for paddle participants. Plan ahead by using nearby public lots or arranging for drop-off This is a rain-or-shine event — dress for the weather and don't forget your sunscreen and a water bottle.
