Bengals think they found NFL draft's best player at specific need
A solid trip to the NFL draft for the Cincinnati Bengals faded into the background due to the contract standoff with first-round pick Shemar Stewart. But as a whole, the Bengals still think they came away with big improvements after nabbing guys near the top of their board at each of their selections. Advertisement Fourth-round linebacker Barrett Carter is a great example. Scout Andrew Johnson told Bengals broadcaster Dan Hoard the following about Carter: 'He was probably the best cover linebacker in the draft. He can run, change direction, and flip his hips.' RELATED: Cincinnati Bengals' 53-man roster projection following 2025 offseason Carter's skill in coverage wasn't a secret going into the draft itself. Now, his talent arrives in Cincinnati at an interesting time as the Bengals look to recoup after the loss of Akeem Davis-Gaither. It's one part of remaking the linebacker room this offseason. Carter brings versatility and subpackage utility. Second-rounder Demetrius Knight Jr. can step in next to Logan Wilson with Germaine Pratt gone and free-agent add Oren Burks adds more veteran snaps and versatility, too. Bengals Release Star Defender Following Career Year
The Cincinnati Bengals are parting ways with one of their star defenders following his career year in 2024. The Cincinnati Bengals defense is getting a little bit weaker after it was announced on Monday that the team is releasing star linebacker Germaine Pratt, according to NFL Network insider Tom Pelissero. Pratt, 29, is coming off arguably the best season of his six-year NFL career. In 2024, he recorded a career-high 143 tackles (80 solo), two forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries and two interceptions — one of only three players with at least 140 tackles and six turnover plays. Advertisement However, he requested to be traded in February with just one year left on his three-year, $20.25 million contract and coming off a very disappointing season in which the Bengals defense allowed the seventh-most points per game (25.5) and eighth-most total yards per game (348.3). Pratt's release will also save Cincinnati $5.6 million in salary cap space and allow the team to get younger at the position. The Bengals selected South Carolina linebacker Demetrius Knight Jr. in the second round (No. 49 overall) in the 2025 NFL Draft. He will join linebackers Logan Wilson, Oren Burks, and Barrett Carter, among others, in Cincinnati. He developed into a consistent starter and team captain over his six years. Advertisement During that span, Pratt racked up 616 tackles (355 solo), 3.5 sacks, seven forced fumbles, five fumble recoveries, seven interceptions, and 23 passes defensed. NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport reported in February that Pratt was close with former Bengals defensive coordinator Lou Anarumo, who has since joined the Colts as their defensive coordinator. So Indianapolis is a team to keep an eye on for the new free agent linebacker. This article originally appeared on Steelers Now: Bengals Release Star Defender Following Career Year Related Headlines

Bengals Cutting $20 Million Star Would Mean Huge Request of Rookie
The Cincinnati Bengals are reportedly likely to be cutting star linebacker Germaine Pratt in the near future, so the team will need someone to come in and fill the hole he leaves behind. The team might have gotten that guy in the 2025 NFL Draft. Advertisement In a recent article by PFF's Trevor Sikkema, he outlines his favorite draft pick that every team made. For the Bengals, the players he lists is former South Carolina linebacker Demetrius Knight Jr., who the team got with the No. 47 pick in the second round. "When the Bengals defense was at its best — in the team's 2021 season — it had top-tier linebacker play. The unit lacked playmakers around middle linebacker Logan Wilson heading into the draft, and that's where Knight fills a big hole," Sikkema writes. "He can use his speed as an ideal weakside linebacker next to Wilson." Pratt (who is playing on a $20 million total contract) was one of the best tackles in the NFL in 2024 with 143, and Knight - lofty though the goal seems to be - could be that kind of guy for the Bengals. He finished his one and only season at South Carolina with 82 total tackles, with eight of them being for a loss. He was also able to show his versatility by getting to the quarterback and recording two sacks, as well as snagging an interception. Advertisement The Bengals defense has been disappointing the past several seasons, and Knight be will be looking to help the team turn it around.
