Investment by global companies in Ireland so far in 2025 could create more than 10,000 jobs

INVESTMENT by global companies in Ireland during the first half of this year could lead to the creation of more than 10,000 jobs in the country. IDA Ireland, the Irish Government's inward investment promotion agency, also revealed there have been 179 investments so far this year, a 37 per cent increase on the same period last year. The agency announced the figures today as it published its mid-year results and its annual report for 2024. "Today's figures demonstrate Ireland's continued attractiveness as a trusted partner and a proven investment location, speaking to our many strengths in areas such as innovation and talent as well as our stable, pro-enterprise business landscape," said IDA Ireland CEO Michael Lohan. "It also points to our resilience in the face of continuing global economic uncertainty." New investments and expansions Notably, 52 of the investments are new or first-time investors into the country and include health data company Datavant and PlayStation creators Sony Interactive Entertainment. Meanwhile, 41 investments will be expansions from existing client companies, growing and further embedding their operations. Companies boosting their Irish operations this year include telecommunications firm Ericsson, tech giant IBM and Japanese pharmaceutical company Astellas. Of the investments, 43 are research, development and innovation (RD&I) projects, 34 have been made across the areas of green capital and sustainability, while 91 (51 per cent) have been into regional locations outside of Dublin. In its annual report, IDA Ireland highlighted the increased global competition for foreign direct investment (FDI) as more countries compete for fewer investments, while the scale and impact of projects grows. However, with its strong foundation of global companies, world-class talent base and exceptional reputation for RD&I, IDA Ireland believes the country is well positioned to secure future emerging opportunities. 'Premier location' "IDA Ireland continues to partner with new and existing clients to support them in their investment endeavours here, to help their global competitiveness, and to deliver economic impact across all regions of the country," said Mr Lohan. "None of this can happen without the support of the Irish Government through the Department of Enterprise, Tourism & Employment, the contribution and commitment of our many stakeholders and partners, and our team in Ireland and overseas, all working to position Ireland as the premier location for FDI." Meanwhile, Enterprise Minister Peter Burke said: "I am pleased to see the positive trends in the volume of Foreign Direct Investment so far this year. "They show Ireland retains its attractiveness as a competitive location for companies seeking a stable and cutting-edge environment from which to grow their business."

IDA Ireland secures 179 investments in first half of 2025

The number of investments into Ireland by foreign multinational companies increased by almost 37% during the first six months of the year compared to the same time in 2024. IDA Ireland's mid-year results show there were 179 investments secured between January and the end of June, up from 131 over the same period last year. The inward investment agency says the projects will lead to the creation of just over 10,000 jobs, an increase of 12% on the 8,900 jobs generated in the first half of 2024. The IDA says balanced regional development is continuing, with 91 of the Foreign Direct Investments in the year to date in regions outside of Dublin. The figure represents 51% of the overall number of projects secured in the first half of 2025. Of the 179 investments between January and the end of June, 52 or 30% of the companies announced investments for the first time here. 41 of the investments are expansions from existing IDA client companies, 43 relate to research and development, while 34 are in the areas of green capital and sustainability. Despite ongoing global uncertainty over trade and tariffs, the CEO of IDA Ireland said FDI is "holding very strong." Michael Lohan said the mid-year results point to the country's "resilience in the face of continuing global economic uncertainty." "Today's figures demonstrate Ireland's continued attractiveness as a trusted partner and a proven investment location, speaking to our many strengths in areas such as innovation and talent as well as our stable, pro-enterprise business landscape," the IDA CEO said. Mr Lohan also pointed to substantial investment in critical areas such as R&D, digitalisation, sustainability and talent development. While IDA clients pledged during the first half of the year to create 10,003 jobs, the data released today does not take into account job losses at multinationals during the period. Michael Lohan said the agency does not "tot up the net job losses until year end" and it said it would be "premature to make any comment" at the mid-point of the year. He said the indicators for the remainder of the year are positive, with a "strong pipeline of investments, but added that the IDA expects a softening in job creation over the coming months. "We won't see the same level of job creation for the second half of the year," Mr Lohan said. "That's not unusual. The first half tends to be the strongest half in terms of investment numbers. But we're still seeing a strong pull through," he added. And he said site visits by foreign companies remain "quite strong," with the figure up 14% year on year from last year." While the uncertainty over tariffs is creating a challenging trade environment, the IDA boss said global companies "need to make investments to serve global markets." Michael Lohan said Ireland is a proven location, which offers "stability and clarity and certainty." "I've consistently heard a message from large multinationals, and that is, they are international companies in nature. They require global supply chains, and they're going to continue to invest in global supply chains," he stated. Mr Lohan said while the current discussions around tariffs and global trade is "undoubtedly" leading to some levels of uncertainty, he said the principle of international markets, international supply chain, international investment still remains. "I think we're going to continue to see that, albeit we have to get through the current negotiations in terms of global trade," he added. The IDA also said Ireland needs to ensure continued competitiveness across cost and regulation. The agency said the delivery of infrastructure, including housing, energy, the grid, water and transport, is critical. The Minister for Enterprise described the IDA mid-year results as "a very strong performance." "It's great to see that we have a very strong performance, but obviously there is very significant uncertainty around the geopolitical landscape," Peter Burke said. He said getting a resolution to the talks on tariffs is "key for decision makers" across the economy in getting investments over the line. In terms of the domestic challenges, Minister Burke insisted the Government was "essentially controlling the problems that we can." "That's why we're going forward with our competitive action plan across the month of July, which will be key to ensure that our value proposition remains strong as a country," he stated. "We have to ensure we're investing in capital expenditure and it would be critical that we get a strong performance through our national development plan review," he added.

Melaka Rebrands Lohan Guava As MelGuv

MELAKA, June 29 (Bernama) -- The Lohan guava (GU16), a fruit synonymous with Melaka, has been rebranded as MelGuv, short for Melaka Guava. Melaka Chief Minister Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh said the rebranding marks a transformation and adds value to the state's agricultural sector, especially with the growing production of MelGuv. "MelGuv has a distinct flavour that is both sweet and crunchy, setting it apart from guavas grown in other regions. The largest plantation of MelGuv is located in Pulau Gadong. "Last year, 1,139 metric tonnes of the fruit were produced over 80 hectares in Melaka," he told reporters after closing the Melaka Agrofest 2025. Also present was the state Rural Development, Agriculture, and Food Security committee chairman, Datuk Dr Muhamad Akmal Saleh. He said commercial guava cultivation in Melaka began in 2023, with annual production now exceeding 1,000 metric tonnes and continuing to grow each year. In conjunction with the three-day agrofest that began on Friday, 15,000 MelGuv fruits were distributed to visitors. Ab Rauf also reported RM1.05 million in sales and 41,842 visitors over the first two days, with attendance expected to rise on the final day. He added that the agrofest remains a vital platform to strengthen the agri-food sector, having evolved from its original form as the Farmers, Livestock Breeders, and Fishermen's Day, introduced in 1983.

IBM to create 75 new jobs in Waterford

Up to 75 engineering jobs will be created by IBM at a new research and development centre in Waterford, the company announced on Thursday. The global technology company will hire software engineers over the next three years. The roles will focus on innovation for IBM Z, the company's global transaction technology. The Waterford software engineers will collaborate with IBM's R&D teams worldwide, from designing processors and firmware to software development and advancing the Linux operating system. IBM employs more than 3,000 people in Ireland. IBM last year announced the recruitment of another 800 high-tech jobs in Ireland by 2027 in roles spanning R&D, digital sales, and consulting operations, across Dublin, Cork, and Waterford. 'I am delighted to see our footprint in Ireland evolve further. This is testimony to the deep talent pools available across the country, upon which we have steadily built our business, including mainframes which are a cornerstone of global transactions," said IBM Ireland country general manager Nathan Cullen. "IBM has now operated in Ireland for nearly 70 years and this milestone investment for the region also speaks volumes about the ecosystem that has built up around the South Eastern Technical University.' The announcement for Waterford was welcomed by the Government and IDA Ireland. IDA Ireland chief executive Michael Lohan noted the decision to strengthen the company's collaboration with the South East Technological University, which the IDA said will develop a technical skills ecosystem with a focus on mainframes and Linux. Mr Lohan said the investment is closely aligned to the IDA strategy published in February, entitled Adapt Intelligently: A Strategy for Sustainable Growth and Innovation, 2025-29, which commits to positioning Ireland at the centre of cutting-edge global technological innovation in the next five years. "I warmly welcome this decision by IBM and assure them of IDA's continued partnership," Mr Lohan said. IBM is a leading provider of global hybrid cloud and AI, and consulting expertise with operations in more than 175 countries. More than 4,000 government and corporate entities in critical infrastructure areas such as financial services, telecommunications and healthcare use IBM's hybrid cloud platform and Red Hat OpenShift products.
