Delhi Confidential: Past & present
Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla has launched an initiative to make more people aware of the journey of the Constitution over the years. During a recent media interaction, the Speaker presented participants a specially curated kit which included a copy of the original Constitution — without the words socialist and secular — in its calligraphed form. According to sources, the primary objective of the initiative was to familiarise the recipients with the exquisite calligraphy and provide insight into India's rich cultural heritage. Language AI-D As the row over languages casts its shadow on the forthcoming Parliament session, the Lok Sabha Secretariat is publishing daily Parliamentary business and agenda papers in 12 languages — Assamese, Bengali, English, Gujarati, Hindi, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Odia, Punjabi, Tamil and Telugu — using AI tools. Officials are calling it a move towards inclusivity. MLAs & Ministers Congress leaders from Jharkhand in a meeting with the party high command on Monday raised complaints against some state ministers who have allegedly not been visiting their constituencies or giving appointments to MLAs. Lok Sabha LoP Rahul Gandhi said ministers should not forget that they belong to the 'MLA family'. A source present at the meeting said Gandhi's 'advice' to the ministers was not a stern one; it almost sounded like a 'polite appeal'. Another complaint to the high command was that party leaders in Jharkhand were 'not very active' on social media.

From Monsoon Session, A Hi-Tech Attendance System For Lok Sabha MPs
New Delhi: Members of the Lok Sabha will now be able to mark attendance at their seats in the House, addressing a very old complaint, sources have said. Marking attendance has not been easy for MPs under the current system, since many reach parliament together at 11 am, and have to rush in without signing so they do not miss the session. The MPs are considered present only after sign the register and they receive the daily allowance. There are some who just sign the register and leave without attending the day's session. New System To Mark Attendance According to sources in the Lok Sabha Secretariat, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla has taken the new initiative in the Monsoon Session of Parliament starting from July 21 and continue till August 21. MPs will now be able to mark their attendance through a few processes - all hi-tech. Under this, a Multi Model Device (MMD) has been installed on the seats allotted to MPs. Through it, MPs will now be able to mark their attendance during the session. The Three Options All MPs have been given three options to mark their attendance through the MMD. The first is Multi Media Card (MMC), through which attendance can be recorded. Besides, every MP will be given a pin number which will be entered in MMD and attendance will be recorded. The third option is biometric -- MPs will be able to register their attendance by placing their fingers in MMD. Both Systems Available In Monsoon Session Sources said the current system will also be maintained along with the new system in the monsoon session. Under the current system, all MPs have to reach the Parliament House and sign the register kept outside the Lok Sabha. Under this process, many MPs reach Parliament together, due to which there is a crowd and many are unable to sign in the hurry. A new system has been implemented to solve this problem. After the feedback of the MPs regarding the new system, it will be fully implemented from the winter session. MPs Sign And Leave It is often seen that some MPs just sign in the attendance register and go back and do not attend the session. In such a situation, if attendance can be marked by going to one's seat inside the House, it would also enhance attendance. It is not clear yet whether a similar system will be implemented in Rajya Sabha.

MNS flays govt over absence of Marathi signage at Lok Sabha secretariat event held in Mumbai
The Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) has attacked the government over the absence of Marathi signage at an event organised by the Lok Sabha Secretariat to mark 75 years of the Estimates Committees of Parliament and State Legislature. The event held in Mumbai featured banners in Hindi and English—but none in Marathi. 'This is Maharashtra. The event may be national, but the venue is Mumbai. How can Marathi be missing from the main stage? If we don't uphold our language, who will?' MNS Mumbai chief Sandeep Deshpande said. He accused the state government of lacking resolve to protect regional identity and referenced former finance minister C D Deshmukh's resignation from the Nehru cabinet during the Samyukta Maharashtra movement. Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde clarified that the programme was organised by the Lok Sabha Secretariat, which decided the language used on banners. 'If the state government had hosted it, Marathi would have been included,' Shinde said.

China, Iran on board as Brics forum stands against Pahalgam attack
The Brics Parliamentary Forum has strongly condemned the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack and resolved to take collective action against terrorism, according to a communique released by the Lok Sabha Secretariat on Friday. The joint declaration was adopted at the 11th Brics Parliamentary Forum held in Brasilia, Brazil, by 10 member nations, including India, Brazil, Russia, China, South Africa, Iran, the United Arab Emirates, Egypt, Ethiopia, and Indonesia. The high-level Indian delegation was led by Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla. 'The joint declaration strongly condemned the recent terrorist attack in Pahalgam, India, and member parliaments agreed to act collectively against terrorism. Shri Birla stressed the need for joint efforts to curb financial support to terrorist organizations, enhance intelligence sharing, prevent the misuse of emerging technologies, and promote cooperation in investigation and judicial processes,' the communique stated, noting that India's firm stance on countering terrorism was strongly acknowledged by the forum. The communique also stated that Birla, in his address, presented India's position on various key subjects — especially global cooperation against terrorism, a just and balanced international order, participation in technological innovation, and democratic exchange. The two-day Brics Parliamentary Forum, which ended on June 5, saw delegates deliberating pressing global challenges including the responsible use of artificial intelligence, inter-parliamentary cooperation, global trade and economy, and international peace and security. At the conclusion of the event, Birla was handed over the chairmanship over the forum's chairmanship, with India hosting the 12th Brics Parliamentary Forum next year. 'India will now play an active role in strengthening cooperation among Brics parliaments and advancing a shared approach to addressing global challenges,' the statement added. Terrorists gunned down 26 tourists at Baisaran meadow in Pahalgam on April 22, leading to a spike in tensions between two countries. India launched Operation Sindoor in the early hours of May 7 when the army and the Indian Air Force (IAF) hit nine terror camps inside Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, killing more than 100 terrorists. It triggered four days of strikes and counterstrikes with fighter jets, missiles, drones, long-range weapons and heavy artillery before the two sides reached an understanding on stopping all military action on May 10.
